Product Description
This book looks at a sector of black and Asian British film and television as it presented itself in the 1990s and early 2000s. For this period, a ‘mainstreaming’ of black and Asian British film has been observed in criticism and theory and articulated by an increasing number of practitioners themselves, referring to changing modes of production, distribution and reception and implying a more popular and commercial orientation of certain media products. This idea is a leitmotif for the authors’ readings of recent films and examples of television drama, including such diverse products as Young Soul Rebels and Babymother, East Is East and Bend It Like Beckham, The Buddha of Suburbia and White Teeth. These analyses are supplemented with a look at earlier landmark productions (like Pressure) as well as relevant social, institutional and aesthetic frameworks. The book closes with a selection of statements by black and Asian media practitioners who operate from within!

Britain’s cultural industries: Mike Phillips, Horace Ové, Julian Henriques, Parminder Vir and Gurinder Chadha. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A post-apocalypse variant
The world - as we know it - has ended. The world - period - has ended for the teenager son of a brilliant nanospecialist, the day he met full-body with a wall, at high speed. Reconstructed in body and with a amplified brain-power, the boy wakes to a world that has waited for years for him to get up and lead the way to a fabled secret base his mother had built and never revealed, before her untimely death. The thing is - even if his body has grown, Eric is still a teenager in mind, since he had no chance to become an adult. So he does what a teen would do: sulk and refuse to raise a finger. The desprerate world will not take no for an answer, not even from its probable saviour, and aided by Car, a machine enhanced with a bit of an artificial intelligence, and haunted by a feminine alter-ego that protects his mind from the worst shocks, Eric sets out to find this secret base...
His plan is to find a quick way to suicide.
Car just wants its owner alive and happy.
The world will settle for salvation.

None of them get what they're after.

A great sci-fi, doubled by a coming-of-age tale. Recommended! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Ancient Rome
Black Salamander
A Roman Murder Mystery
by Marilyn Todd

This book is number six in Todd's lively series featuring the feisty, racy Roman widow, Claudia Seferius. Truthfully, Todd's heroine seems like she belongs more to the 21th century world than Ancient Rome at the beginning of the first century C.E. But much of the historic details are accurate, and the books are fast paced and fun. Claudia is not one to sit around letting bad things happen to her even if they usually are a result of her own mismanaged life. Instead she jumps, and sometimes is forced, into seeking solutions to the murders an mysteries that seem to surround her. In this one, Claudia joins a trade delegation to Gaul, and then everything goes wrong...... ... Read more

Product Description

Every year over a million people pack the streets of London's Notting Hill for Carnival, but as the carnival-goers soak up the sights, sounds and smells of the festival, few appreciate that its founder died in poverty on Christmas Eve in the bitterly cold winter of 1964, the end of a life dogged by struggle and illness. Claudia Jones: A Life in Exile is the first book to chart the life and work this visionary and pioneer.

Born in Trinidad in 1915, Claudia Jone's family moved to Harlem, New York, where the young Claudia became a leading figure in Communist and black politics. Forced into exile in Britain in 1955, Jones arrived in London penniless and friendless. She became active in civil rights campaigns amongst the new West Indian communities established in the capital and launched an annual Carnival to showcase the talents and culture of the Afro-Caribbean community. The book's particular focus is on the time that Jones spent in Britain

Claudia Jones: A Life in Exile is a fitting and long overdue testament to a remarkable woman who was quite simply years ahead of her time.
