5-0 out of 5 stars Funny stuff
I started listening to old radio shows several years ago (I'm not old enough
to have heard them when first broadcast) and have found the Jack Benny Show
to be among the best. The format and cast of charactors were second to none. Some of the humor with Eddie Anerson's Rochester will make you cringe. Not as racist as Amos and Andy but still playing to a stereotype. I can't stand Irish tenors but Dennis Day's song only last 2 minutes. There are a lot of running gags and inside jokes, but the more shows you hear the more they
will make sense. This CD set is better than "SPOOFS" another Radio Spirits
set. Both are worth owning though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny shows but not enough of them, and sound problems
On the first show, there are sound issues - some sort of background tinkling - that should've been cleaned up. It would have been nice to have more shows but I guess one hour is all that'll fit per CD. ... Read more

Excerpt: Jack Benny (February 14, 1894 December 26, 1974), born Benjamin Kubelsky, was an American comedian, vaudevillian, and actor for radio, television, and film. Widely recognized as one of the leading American entertainers of the 20th century, Benny played the role of the comic penny-pinching miser, insisting on remaining 39 years old on stage despite his actual age, and often playing the violin badly. Benny was known for his comic timing and his ability to get laughs with either a pregnant pause or a single expression, such as his signature exasperated "Well!" His radio and television programs, tremendously popular from the 1930s to the 1960s were a foundational influence on the situation comedy genre. Dean Martin, on the celebrity roast for Johnny Carson in November 1973, introduced Benny as "the Satchel Paige of the world of comedy." Jack was born February 14, 1894, in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in neighboring Waukegan, Illinois. He was the son of Meyer Kubelsky and Emma Sachs Kubelsky. Meyer was a Jewish saloon owner, later to become a haberdasher, who had emigrated to America from Poland. Emma had emigrated from Lithuania. Benny bega...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=82587 ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great collection of Benny!
Though some of the episodes included on this set sound very primitive, compared to later Jack Benny episodes, the basic elements are there:Jack's stinginess, vanity, his Maxwell, and his cast puncturing his ego. The funniest episode on this set is the one in which Jack tries to getBarbara Stanwyck to do his show. It's an almost perfect show.No radiolover should be without this set! ... Read more

Chapters: 1930s American Television Series, 1930s British Television Series, the Jack Benny Program, Telecrime, the Disorderly Room, Wasp's Nest, Picture Page, for the Children, Sports Review, Starlight, Theatre Parade, the Television Ghost, Ann and Harold. Excerpt: The Jack Benny Program, starring Jack Benny, is a radio-TV comedy series that ran for more than three decades and is generally regarded as a high-water mark in 20th-century comedy. With Canada Dry Ginger Ale as a sponsor, Benny came to radio on The Canada Dry Program, beginning May 2, 1932, on the NBC Blue Network and continuing there for six months until October 26, moving the show to CBS on October 30. With Ted Weems leading the band, Benny stayed on CBS until January 26, 1933. Arriving at NBC on March 17, Benny did The Chevrolet Program until April 1, 1934. He continued with The General Tire Revue for the rest of that season, and in the fall of 1934, for General Foods as The Jell-O Program Starring Jack Benny (1934-42) and, when sales of Jell-O were affected by sugar rationing during World War II, The Grape Nuts Program Starring Jack Benny (1942-44). On October 1, 1944, the show became The Lucky Strike Program Starring Jack Benny, when American Tobacco's Lucky Strike cigarettes took over as his radio sponsor, through the mid-1950s. By that time, the practice of using the sponsor's name as the title began to fade. The show returned to CBS on January 2, 1949, as part of CBS president William S. Paley's notorious "raid" of NBC talent in 1948-49. There it stayed for the remainder of its radio run, which ended on May 22, 1955. CBS aired repeats of previous 1953-55 radio episodes from 1956 to 1958 as The Best of Benny for State Farm Insurance, who later sponsored his television program from 1...
