In 1573 the Guangdong Province county of Dongguan was divided into 2 parts, one of which was named Xin'an Xian (New Peace County). Its 600 square miles of territory included all of what is now Hong Kong & the New Terr. The new county was poor, sparsely populated & harassed by marauding bands of pirates & land-based ruffians. This Gazetteer was the combined work of local people & officials. It dealt with the geog., history, economy, traditions & lit. of the area & remains today the fullest source of info. on pre-20th cent. Xin'an. This book looks at the 1819 ed. of the gazetteer, the last revision of it to be made. The English-language chapters are under 4 headings History, Geog., Econ. & Gov't. Old maps have been redrawn. 4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive to say the least
I don't know if there are many people out there who can lay claim to a Louis XIII autograph, or even a George Washington autograph. If they did, they probably also have Jesus Christ on a baseball.

My point is, thereare listings for hundreds if not thousands of people whose autographsprobably don't even exist. The book is good for referencing celebritiesand sports stars, but there are far too many pages dedicated to the varioustypes of William Henry Harrison signatures, and other topics we need notexplore.

If this is the "standard guide" it should be alittle more up to date.I would rather see five facimilies of a Robert DeNiro or a Mickey Mantle autograph than of somebody who has been dead for500 years, because you know what-- chances are I won't be getting theirsignature any time soon, so I won't need to compare it to a facimile.

This book is a very comprehensive price guide for today's celebritiesand sports stars, which is why I give it a four star rating. But if thebook spent less time dealing with signatures from centuries ago, and moretime dealing with the stars of today and tommorow (I got Heidi Klum's sigthe other day, and she isn't listed-- she is probably one of the mostfamous models in the world), it would truly be the best autograph guide outthere.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Torch Is Passed!
Wow, after reading so many books about autographs finally a realistic book enters the market. Unlike the Sanders guide it it deals with values at a realistic level and why not Baker has written more books about the subjectthan any other author in this genre. Not since Charles Hamilton's books onthe subject have I ever learned so much, Bravo!

2-0 out of 5 stars Copy of Sanders
I'm not a fan of monopolies, but in this case, the Sanders Price Guide is the one and only. This book tries to be the "standard?"Sanders is the standard in the field, and while ambitious, this book simply doesn'tmeasure up.Good for facsimilies, but that's about it.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must have book for the autograph hound !!
This huge 608 page volume is loaded to the gills with over 50,000 autograph values covering 15,000 names.More than 1,000 facsimile signatures and photos of autographed items are shown. There are numerouschapters of background information that will be of interest and value toexperienced autographers as well as novices. This book covers topicsincluding sports, entertainment, music, artists, literary, business, medicine, space, heads of state and much, much more. The index alone isover 70 pages!! It provides accurate pricing, informative insight intomarket trends and many current topics.A super reference book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally A Realistic Autograph Price Guide!
This book filled with facsimile signatures and finally some accurate prices for a variety of autographs. The author's analysis of the market is also included and alone worth the purchase price.Well worth purchasing byanyone who loves the hobby! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars To the Heart of the Nile:Lady Florence Baker
One of the best books written on early exploration of Africa by the British regime.Told by the wife of Lord Baker, it brings a human element to the culture, danger, excitement and added hardship when Lady Baker travelled with her husband.I recommend this book to anyone interested in history and human endurance.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Lady Baker
Biography of amazing Lady Baker and her husband Sir Sam, who found her at a slave auction in the old Ottoman Empire, stole her away from the winner, and took her to the heart of Africa at a time when proper white English ladies did not venture so far.But far from an impediment on his journeys, Florence was his soul mate, companion, friend, co-worker and adviser. It was, as Florence said, a "love match" at a time when proper white English ladies did not often find such.Of course, Florence didn't fit the role because she wasn't born and raised as a proper white English lady.

Wrapped around the edges of the personal triumphs and tragedies of the Baker African treks are the politics of empire, slavery and race in the late afternoon of the age of English Empire. This era of magic and mystery lends a suitably majestic and moving background to the Bakers' stirring story.

3-0 out of 5 stars Thrilling Tale, Flawed Book
This book notably advances understanding of the Bakers, wife/husband explorers extraordinaire. Most works focus on Samuel, treating Florence as an exotic appendage, but she was talented, fearless and an active agent in their adventures. The well-written text does justice to her inherently dramatic life, but problematic features lessen its credibility.First, there is much invented dialogue. While based on a sound grasp of primary sources and appreciation of Florence's character, such licence inevitably strays from the facts.Readers will wonder which parts are reliably documented and what is invention, but it makes for a stirring tale.More weighty is that Shipman is not an Africa specialist. This leads to numerous flaws, minor in themselves but cumulatively damaging. Many place and personal names have archaic spellings no longer used in their countries or by Africanists.Shipman routinely adopts the Bakers' negative views, repeating hoary insults about African laziness, theft, lying and dissipation. (The section on Florence's early life and Islamic education in the Ottoman Empire is more nuanced and sympathetic.) She also seems to endorse their Victorian ethnocentrism: "From his plantation days, Sam knew how to command large numbers of natives," p.62.Authors should hew closely to the sources, but also build on them without being constrained by their perspective. The Bakers achieved marvels of physical endurance in Africa, but disrupted many societies by using force to pursue their goals; the book elides this aspect of their 1870s military expedition to the Upper Nile.Cf. R. Collins's harsh but judicious chapter on Samuel Baker (R. Rotberg ed., "Africa & Its Explorers"), showing that the people Florence and Samuel met had their own valid concerns and goals.

4-0 out of 5 stars Out of impulse, out of adventure, or a sense of attraction Sam kidnaps Florence
The story of Florence Baker and Sam Baker was well known to me. In most histories of the discovery of the Nile these two are treated somewhat as a sideshow, an entertainment, not to rank with Richard Burton or John Hanning Speke. But how that view changes with Pat Shipman's worthy biography of this incredible couple. We meet Florence being orphaned and raised to be in a harem, not discovering she was a slave until the day she was to be sold and then an event happens that would make the three musketeer's proud. Sam Baker on holiday, hunting attends the slave auction and finds him self bidding on this 15 year old girl (half his age). He loses and she is condemned to life in an Ottoman harem as a slave. But then out of impulse, out of adventure, or a sense of attraction he kidnaps Florence and they begin one of the most marvelous romances and live their lives full of adventures. They choose to find the true source of the Nile resulting in a truly amazing story. My only complaint with the narrative is that I found the two Nile expeditions became a bit of a tedious read. I think this is because they dwell on many issues and events and don't seem to focus on the two's relationship; or maybe it is because the first 100 to 150 pages are so exciting and spellbinding that one is bound to be let down by just a trek though impossible terrain. The ending is marvelous proving that true stores can have an amazing arch and warmth. After Sam Baker's death Florence lives on to take interest in Sam's young grandnephew that grows up, learns Arabic, and is assigned to the Sudan Political Service. During this work he hears stories of the famous Sam and Florence. For those interested in jihads we even follow the events of the great Mahdi army's crushing defeat of the British and Gordon's death and loss of Khartoum. I recommend to anyone interested in adventure, the history of the Sudan, great romances and the Nile source discovery. And I must mention you must read Alan Moorehead's great books THE WHITE NILE and THE BLUE NILE that more fully tell the story of the discovery of the source of the Nile.

5-0 out of 5 stars The incredible determination of the early Explorer!
Based on journal entries, private papers, and newspaper articles of the day, Pat Shipman has provided us with a true story of love and bravery. When Sam and Florence Baker set out together to search for the source of the Nile, they encountered unbelievable conditions as they painfully made their way on camel back across the burning desert, and often on foot through the jungle to the heart of Africa. Knowing that they eventually became Lord and Lady Baker is a consolation, as you suffer with their trials, debilitating fevers and horrendous tribal wars. Here we have a story of enduring love amidst great hardship.A book worth reading from beginning to end as you watch Sam Baker rescue this beautiful Hungarian girl from a highly specialized slave auction for girls who had been prepared to grace anySultan's harem! This remarkable and beautiful young woman went on to save the life of her husband on more than one occasion. The charming black and white sketches and illustrations, plus two maps, add considerably to the value of the book.

Product Description
Mary Baker Eddy felt this collection of writings was so important she requested, in 1897, that students of her works spend the next year thoroughly reading it. The diverse articles, addresses, letters, and poems on topics such as mental healing, forgiveness, angels, and marriage are based on the author's own experiences of putting her system of healing into practice. Considered by Eddy to be a book that would help readers better understand Science and Health, it contains dozens of letters from people healed just by reading that work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful book about prayer and spiritual healing
I've read this book several times and it has a special place in my heart as one of the best books out there on prayer and spiritual healing.

It is a compilation of Mrs. Eddy's writings and includes "Christian Healing," which is a MUST READ for anyone interested in prayers that heal and restore.

Also included in Miscellaneous Writings is "Ways That are Vain" which is one of the best explanations of evil that I've ever seen in print.

If you just want to know more about Mary Baker Eddy, this book really gives an inside look at the woman's life and work. "Retrospection and Introspection" (in Misc. Writings) is Mrs. Eddy's autobiography and is a great read.

This is a THICK book - well over 1,000 pages and it is stuffed full of practical wisdom, good information and specific instruction on how to pray more effectively.

I highly recommend this book, as well as Eddy's more well known book "Science & Health, with Key to the Scriptures". ... Read more

Product Description
"Sexy Christians." The phrase sounds like an oxymoron, but God never intended it to be. Sexual fulfillment is, in fact, God's idea. Yet many Christians seem to think the more spiritual they are, the less sexual they will be, and the more sexual they are, the less spiritual they will be. Dr. Ted and Diane Roberts want to turn this thinking on its head.Readers will learn why men and women see sex differently, what the greatest aphrodisiac is, and how to avoid the most lethal killer to a great sex life. The authors also explore what men's and women's sexual needs are and why they are so different, what sex is all about from God's perspective, and what the differences are between male and female sexual response cycles. End-of-chapter questions encourage couples to apply the book's principles at home.Readers and groups can go a step further with the Sexy Christians Workbook. Loaded with additional content, this workbook is designed to challenge couples to explore the rewarding work of intimacy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Gift to the Body of Christ
Dr. Ted & Diane Roberts are a true gift to the body of Christ.

Not only have we gained the privilege of knowing them through their countless writings on healing and new "Sexy Christians" book, but we have grown to know them personally through the conferences and ministry they demonstrated at our church in San Diego, CA. Quite often eloquent words, lofty ideas and "creative interpretations of scripture" envelope the bookshelves labeled "Christian." While this book is eloquent of speech, the substance behind it is wholesome and very necessary. I encourage every married couple to read it (both husband and wife and every Christian who claims to be a part of the bride of Christ).

Reap the fruit of it's words.

Live the life it encourages.

Take back what the enemy has attempted to steal in spousal intimacy and discover how God loves you at the core of your being.

5-0 out of 5 stars recommended for couples seeking deeper marital intimacy
As a Marriage and Family Therapist I strongly recommend this book for couples who are looking to improve or ignite sexual intimacy within their marriage. Couples will benefit from the depth of knowledge and expertise that Dr. Roberts and his wife Diane offer in presenting real world, biblical based solutions to problems that encumber true intimacy.

The Roberts' combine spiritual truths, clinical evidence, and their own remarkable experience as Christian leaders and husband and wife team to deliver a highly readable, enlightening book about a topic that many in the Christian community choose to avoid or ignore. This book reads like time spent with two wise friends who are available to teach and share their personal, professional, and spiritual understanding of sexual intimacy. The Sexy Christians book offers the reader a healthy view of the emotional, cognitive, and physical nature of romantic relationship between husband and wife. And through the written exercises titled Love Lessons and Home Play, readers can work to become better equipped for healthy intimacy within their marriage. The material is presented within the context of biblical grace and healing.

A heartfelt thanks to Ted and Diane Roberts for offering to educate people about this oft neglected topic and to convey to all Christians a call to healthy sexuality and intimacy within the covenant of marriage.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Think this Book IS for Single People Too..
As a single woman I feel I need to add my comments here.I purchased this book thinking that it would be good information to store somewhere in the back of my mind until such a time as I was married.I have to say that I have seen a few different comments saying this book isn't for single people and I disagree. This book for me has been incredible.I think that it offers a very "real" perspective on expectations when you are married. Not only sexual ones but just the reality of living, breathing and basically co-existing with another real person.I realize that there are areas in my life that I need to work on now with God before I ever have to face them with another person.

As I was telling my friend about how this book was helping me be more prepared in so many ways for a future marriage, she told me that in our society today people spend more time preparing for a job interview than they do for marriage. That is just crazy. There is a part in this book where Pastor Ted says that it is important to know what you need to know before you fall in love because once the hormones kick in reasoning goes out the window and is replaced by emotional reaction. And maybe I can't list the page number or the section where I read that, but what is important to me is that my head and my heart remember it. While some people think that this book is too much about Ted and Diane, I want to say that that is what is making it so special for me.I can read a text book all day long and not retain half of what I need to, but give me a book that uses real life people and examples and Godly ones at that and it is much easier for me to retain.Examples like theirs don't only give you a blueprint but they give you the tools to apply what you are learning.

I'm not saying that what I am reading doesn't sound really hard but it gives me more of the tools that I need when choosing who I want to spend the rest of my life with.I feel like I am even more aware of some of the things I need to do in my life before God brings me the person who will challenge me and help shape my character into the woman God has called me to be.Though this book is not promoted or even suggested for singles, I recommend it to everyone of them. Why not do everything we can to be prepared.Thank you Ted and Diane for such a wonderful gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Creating True Intimacy
Don't let the title of this book fool you regarding its purpose or discourage you from reading it! Ted and Diane Roberts have hit the ball out of the park with their new book, Sexy Christians: The Purpose, Power, and Passion of Biblical Intimacy.

Ted and Diane, formerly senior pastors of East Hill Foursquare Church in Gresham, Ore., are the founders of Pure Desire Ministries. The stated goal of this ministry is to bring healing to "men and women who have become addicted to sexual behaviors harmful to their social, family and spiritual wellbeing."

Pure Desire works with local churches in this regard, and Ted and Diane are frequent conference speakers, including their own Sexy Christian Conferences. To say the couple has a firm understanding of marital and sexual issues would be an understatement, considering their almost 30 years of church ministry.

Written to Christians in a sex-saturated society, Sexy Christians explains that the path to a fantastic sex life is not achieved by focusing on sex but by developing a deep intimacy between husband and wife. Ted and Diane take time to dispel marital myths, explain why men and women are so different, give men and women tips on how to develop emotional intimacy, and show how intimacy with Christ flows over into one's intimacy with his or her spouse. The book is written in easy-to-read language and gives practical exercises for couples to use at home.

Pastors, this book will help to encourage not only your own marriage, but also those in your congregation. You will want to keep copies of this book on hand to give to couples in premarital counseling, as well as those in established marriages who need a tune up. I highly recommend this book as a resource to you and your congregation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better marriage, better love, better spouse!!
This is a wonderful book that helps couples bond with eachother. When couples have a good relationship and a healthy sex life then they have a better marriage. This book is based on biblical principles and helps couples bond with God and eachother. This leads to a better relationship with God and spouse. While reading this book you can learn of the differences and simularities between males and females and how to deal with these differences. This book has done wonders in my marriage and I highly recommend this book to help lead the way to a better marriage! ... Read more

Product Description
Throughout the Cold War era, many Americans were puzzled that communism could thrive in Italy, a NATO ally with close cultural and social ties to the United States. In this study of Italian Communism and the Italian Communist Party, from its part in the Resistance during World War II to its role in Italy in the eighties, John Baker explains how Italian Communism differs from communism in other nations and why it has flourished in Italy.

Dr. Baker concentrates on the Italian Communist Party's dilemma regarding its relationship with the Soviet Union.Since World War II, Italian Communists have sought to participate in governing Italy. As long as the Party was associated with the aspirations of the Soviet Union, however, it was suspect in the eyes of the Italian electorate and Italy's allies. Thus, to gain influence in Italian politics, the Party was forced to "deradicalize," that is, to disclaim endorsement of nondemocratic methods and to distance itself from Soviet foreign policy.Dr. Baker traces this gradual and successful process of deradicalization.

Overtures by Mikhail Gorbachev toward the Italian Communists reflected a Soviet acknowledgment of the matured posture of the Italian Communist Party. In the context of a half-century of political turmoil in Europe, this study illuminates the evolution of one of the West's oldest and strongest communist movements. ... Liberal, Kansas: "The Pancake Hub of the Universe." Sullivan County, New York: "The lowest death rate of any county in New York State." Rapid City, South Dakota: "The climate is excellent and hog cholera is as yet a stranger." For more than a century, travel brochures have been wooing American "vacationists" with handsome graphics and enticing (and frequently amusing) prose descriptions. See the USA presents more than 200 examples of these delightful documents, drawn from the heyday of American road-tripping. The range of subjects and styles in travel brochure art makes it among the finest work ever produced by American commercial artists, and the descriptions of far-flung destinations are priceless. An entertaining popular culture and design history, See the USA will delight anyone with an interest in the images and words that fueled the patriotic desire to explore the country from coast to coast.Amazon.com Review
Have you ever seen a travel advertisement that truly made you want to pick up and go? Perhaps it was a shot of the Grand Canyon at sunset or the majestic, snow-capped Rocky Mountains. The selling of America through glossy travel brochures is a multimillion-dollar business, but its heyday was in the 1920s and '30s, when tourist boards hired graphic illustrators to dream up splashy Technicolor characters and copywriters came up with hokey slogans to sell their state. If you're intrigued by commercial design and have a healthy case of wanderlust, you'll enjoy See the USA: The Art of the American Travel Brochure, written by pop-culture specialist John Margolies and designed by Eric Baker. Pore over 200 examples of earnest and often unintentionally humorous travel literature that inspired countless Americans to hop aboard trains or into their Model Ts. 3-0 out of 5 stars She Sells Chevys, By D. Shore
This is a pleasant collection of travel-related visual bric-a-brac, mostly from the teens, twenties, and thirties, presented without much comment or context. The material speaks for itself, and is worthy of collection, but a few better-focused volumes would serve this subject matter better.

5-0 out of 5 stars On the road.
Another reviewer has suggested that the brochure covers in this book are examples of good design, as a designer I can say that most of them are mediocre, though some of the illustrations are excellent. However, collect two hundred and put them in a well laid out book and they become fascinating and informative.Who can remember that in 1950 Liberal, Kansas was the 'Pancake hub of the Universe!

Authors Margolies and Baker write an interesting short history of these brochures and their choice of material is comprehensive. A bibliography is provided and a very detailed source list.If you have travelled around the country in the early part of the last century and like to look at printed Americana this book is certainly well worth having.

Product Description
Provocative and often shocking, Sex in the Futureexamines how advances in reproductive technology will change humanbehavior. In-vitro fertilization and surrogate motherhood could meanthe end not only of infertility but also of the need for men and womento form relationships or for women to interrupt careers forpregnancy. Sperm and egg storage mean people can literally shop forgenes, while cloning, egg-egg fertilization, and other techniques willlead to fertility on demand in a Reproduction Restaurant. What willall our choices be, and how far down this road do we want to travel?Amazon.com Review
Robin Baker is one of the people who brought us the notion of kamikaze sperm: valiant but impotent swimmers who sacrifice themselves so that one (or more) of their brethren--as opposed to some other guy's sperm--will secure a man's genetic legacy. In Sperm Wars, Baker told us that the evolutionary drive of our biology determined with whom we mated. In Sex in the Future, he speculates on how. Using the same format of fictionalized scenarios followed by more factual discussion, Baker peers into his sociobiological crystal ball to forecast how we might reproduce in the future, and what it will do to our society. Baker sees the multiplication of assisted reproductive technologies as a social revolution. Sex, love, and reproduction will be divorced. The concept of heterosexuality will be practically meaningless. Children will be commissioned in a much more precise way than can now be done either through mate selection or gamete selection. Sex in the Future is certainly provocative. Some of the content is factual, some is plausible speculation, and some is fantastical. This is not a book full of useful information for people trying to conceive. The bibliography is slight, and Baker is something of a black sheep in the scientific community, the martial nature of sperm having been largely discredited (New Scientist described him as "a sociobiology zealot"). But it certainly is a brave new world of baby-making out there. Might Baker's "Contraceptive Café" and "Reproductive Restaurant" be part of it? You be the judge. --J.R. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Robin Baker had a true winner with "Sperm Wars" but his more recent book on reproduction and family life in the future is far from convincing. His predictions about sexual behavior in the future are in a nutshell based on a couple of fundamental premises:

1. Those who can afford it (and Baker predicts that most of us in the near future can), will at a young age have either their eggs surgically removed or donate their sperm and have them stored in a "gamete bank".With the help of in vitro fertilization and other methods widely available in the future this will allow the separation of reproduction and sex. A human dream may finally come true, we overcome nature, we will be freed from our animalistic instincts and can enjoy the act without the possible "remorse" 9 months later.

2. DNA testing will make it always possible to determine the biological father of a child. The father will have to pay child support based on his income (and the number of children he already fathered), the mother who will receive the support will be financially secure. Baker predicts that men may actually have the most to lose when a women gives birth to a child, because the man's child support will make it attractive for women to have children.Actually, women may trick wealthy men into unprotected sex to be able to collect child support money from that individual. Baker describes this as a dramatic change to the current situation where it is usually the women who have the burden of raising and supporting a child, while receiving little or no child support from the fathers.

Baker's theories are based on what may be scientifically and biologically possible in the future. With the exception of human cloning, most of the reproductive methods described in his book are already available and may just need slight improvements and cost reduction to become feasible. However, Baker only occasionally admits that our evolutionary heritage may render all his predictions of future reproduction and sex life null and void. Will women really just go to the surgeon and have all their eggs removed to be able to reproduce at a later time with or without a sex-partner or to enjoy unprotected sex?As this is highly questionable and definitely arguable Baker does little to convince the reader that his predictions of future sex and family life are indeed the right ones.Where Baker's predictions really could do with some substantiation is on his assumption that women will easily be able to collect child support from the biological fathers of their children, shifting the burden (at least the financial) of child raising from the mother to the father.Baker does not address how such a system of child support collection would or could work. What makes Baker think that the women in the future would not have the same difficulty that exists today in getting the deadbeat fathers to pay their child support?Would all men upon birth have to submit cell samples to an international agency that creates a DNA footprint of that individual and any woman or child support agency can tap into the database to look for a biological father for a child?Aside from the privacy issues, that could only theoretically work as all nations, all laws and all religions would have to support such an agency and its enforcement actions.Hard to imagine.

Baker's book is thought provoking and some of the methods he describes will likely become part of the future of human reproduction.Unfortunately, Baker does little to convince the reader that it will be as widespread as he predicts. He certainly can do better.

5-0 out of 5 stars A provocative, informative examincation of choices & trends.
How will the new reproductive revolution change society and sexuality in the future? Sex in the Future covers such topics as in-vitro fertilizationchoices, surrogate motherhood, gamete storage, and the marketing of genecharacteristics alike, covering the new choices and ethical concernsbrought by the new technologies. A provocative examination of current andfuture choices.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Culture War is about to get hot!
Sex in the Future is a provocative survey of the new reproductive technologies coming down the pipeline in the next few decades. The science is straightforward and should be a shock only to the traditional-minded.Where Baker truly pushes the envelope is in his extrapolation of how thesetechnologies will redefine the family in the 21st Century. Baker sees theend of the nuclear family - already fading today - being replaced withwidespread single parent families and temporary partnerships. Whilesomething like this could happen in Europe, it may have a tougher timegaining popularity in a more religious America. But then, given the impactof thirty years of divorce, feminism, and gay rights, the family hasalready been radically redefined here. If technology and politics developas Baker predicts, future families could be stranger than we know. One canonly hope that the children will turn out happy.

What's perhaps mostunsettling about the book are the vignettes that Baker uses to introduceeach chapter. The characters in each of these stories are often selfish, materialistic, and Machiavellian, featuring women trying to trap wealthymen into fathering children, and men trying to avoid responsibility for thechildren they sire. And rarely do we see anything like affection or love, something you would think as being fundamental to a discussion aboutfamilies. One could argue that Baker is showing extreme examples of humanbehavior in order to show the potential consequences of the technologiesand institutions he discusses. But even so, the fictional sections arealarming enough to add more fuel to a controversial subject.

In spite ofthis, Sex in the Future is full of intriguing ideas and radicalpossibilities. It makes you think about the future, and that's always agood thing. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a psychology book.
This is an interesting book and addresses a number of issues that have been examined more completely in other books.Perhaps the most unfortunate aspect of this book is the misrepresentation of "psychology" when what is actually referenced is rather traditional psychoanalytic theory. The book would have been enhanced, and probably altered, by a careful review of actual psychological research and theory rather than a dated presentation of Freudian theory.

4-0 out of 5 stars An exciting new perspective in psychology
Instead of basing psychology from the point of view of the individual and personal gratification and development, this book shifts our view to the realm of relationships and connection. The basic human need is not solely self-gratification in the way we usually think of it, but a desire for mutually empathic & empowering connection with others which is gratifying and results in psychological growth for all parties. The book lays out the beginnings of this new view and what it means to psychology. The book reflects the fact that this theory is still new and developing. The ideas and thoughts are sure to make a difference in the way psychology is practiced in the future. All the basics of this aspect of psychology are laid out and illustrated.Though there is still work to be done in this area of the field, the book is a good opening.

5-0 out of 5 stars An approach to psychology that women will embrace
This book was recommended to me by a professional in the field.I poured over it's theory, built of moving examples, rather easy and engrossing to read. Now I see that a desire for connection is not a weakness, but a strength.

This book demonstrates how traditional psychology is based on a male point of view, and it reveals some of the unknown about healthly "life-giving" attitudes.Read this quickly, before you buy into an archaic model once again.Amazing, in this day and age, that this light has not been shed on us before. ... Product Description
The first book to provide an easy-to-follow dietary and lifestyle program to enhance the body's natural rhythms for optimum health.

All living things are subject to natural patterns of eating, sleeping, and other vital functions. Disrupting these daily, or circadian, rhythms through poor diet or lifestyle results in a wide range of conditions, from fatigue and emotional imbalance to intensified symptoms of insulin resistance and other chronic health problems.

The Circadian Prescription offers a breakthrough, scientifically sound 10-point program to help anyone:

sleep better and feel energized all day long;
alleviate symptoms of menopause, jet lag, and ADD;
treat and prevent infertility, prostate disease, and Syndrome X;
enhance mental acuity and emotional balance; and
achieve and maintain ideal weight.

At the core of the program is a powerful eating plan that gives the body what it needs when it needs it by simply increasing protein intake in the early part of the day and moving most carbohydrates to the evening. The straightforward, nonrestrictive diet incorporates specific foods that provide vital information to the body to reduce risk factors for chronic disease. Plus, practical techniques--exercise, breathing, and meditation--help bring the entire body into balance.Amazon.com Review
Each of us has a circadian rhythm--daily cyclical changes inchemistry and behavior--that are measured by shifts in bodytemperature, blood pressure, heartbeat, breathing, and bodychemistries. When our circadian rhythms are disrupted by poorlifestyle choices, optimum health is sacrificed. The CircadianPrescription: Get in Step with Your Body's Natural Rhythms to MaximizeEnergy, Vitality, and Longevity by alternative health expertSidney Baker, M.D., with Karen Baar, M.P.H., provides a simple 10-stepplan to right your rhythms.

This thought-provoking, clearly writtenbook based on experimental science and the experiences of Dr. Baker'spatients will challenge many commonly held nutritional beliefs. At thecenter of the prescription is the Circadian Diet, a flexible eatingplan designed to give the body the fuel it needs when it needs it(according to Baker, that means protein during the day andcarbohydrates at night). The plan also includes breathing andmeditation techniques, rhythmic exercise, and tips to improve sleephabits, beat jet lag, and overcome odd work shifts. Separate chaptersare also devoted to weight loss, the role of intestinal flora andphytonutrients, and the specific needs of women, men, andchildren. --Ellen Albertston ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very informative book - and it works
I was told about this book by a friend of mine who is a sports therapist. He has used the recommendations in this book to great affect with his athletes. Eating most of your protein at breakfast and lunch, and most of your carbohydrates in the evening is simple and you will feel the difference. Getting a full 8 hours of darkness while you sleep is also very important for your health. Even the light from your alarm clock or nightlight can interfere with your sleep cycle. If you must use a nightlight, get a red colored bulb since that is the color which interferes the least, while green lights are the worst.

I do believe that following the advice in this book would have a powerful effect on the health of the people of the world. Of course, a revolution in agriculture would do a world of good too, since our health is adversly affected by chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, and genetically modified food. Why aren't these issues ever addressed in relation to health care costs. Corruption, that's why. Follow the money (and the thirst for power), as they say, and you will see through the lies.

5-0 out of 5 stars A TERRIFIC book for solving health problems
The tremendously valuable information in this book can help each of us, especially those with any type of sleep problem, blood sugar problem, or female/male issue (from PMS to prostate cancer). The author, a medical doctor from Yale, does an excellent job of explaining why it's so important to your health that your circadian rhythm is in sync.Best of all, he offers several recommendations you can use to accomplish this.I was a bit skeptical at first but gave it a try.Bingo! My migraine plague of 15+ years stopped dead in its tracks within a few days of following the first of Dr. Baker's suggestions which is to drink a protein/flaxseed shake every morning (simple recipe options are in the book).I've gone 2 months now without a single migraine - normally I would have had about 16 in that time.It doesn't seem possible that such a simple thing could have such a huge impact, but it did (and it came after a multitude of failures trying everything else under the sun over the years).God bless Dr. Baker!!An added bonus was that my wide-awake-at-2am problem improved so I'm sleeping now until 4am or 4:30am.Yeah!By following more of Dr. Baker's suggestions, I hope to do even better. If you only read two books this year, read this one (and "The China Study" by Colin Campbell PhD).

3-0 out of 5 stars It probably works if you try it, but...
Too complex for me!Especially with three kids a job a husband pets and god knows what else.I do believe in his theory, though, and I'm certain it works.Maybe when my last baby goes to college I'll give it a try.

5-0 out of 5 stars $1.00 used - Worth the Time to Read It !
I had dimly begun to suspect the reasoning myself - advertising bombards us with "Carbohydrates Are For Energy", but they always seem to put me to sleep during the day when I need to think clearly. Peeking inside, Dr. Baker says effectively 'duh you idiot that's right save the carbos for dinner'.Liking this reinforcement of personal intuition, I immediately bought the book !

"Protein-in-day, carbs-at-night" is of course not patentable, but it seems to work, and the details are worth $1.00, plus which it is fairly information-dense, not one of those padded tomes.

5-0 out of 5 stars great great book

Amazon.com Review
Mi Moto Fidel, Christopher Baker's intriguing account of his three-month romp through Cuba on a fire-engine red motorcycle is perhaps the most thorough portrait of this faded Communist country to date. Baker leavesno stone unturned as he revisits Ernest Hemingway's haunts in Havana, checks out a secret cave in the foothills of the sierras that onceserved as Che Guevara's command post during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and sips motojos at a thatched-roofed beach bar on Playa Los Pinos. Onthis exhaustive journey, our leather-clad "yanqui" interacts with amyriad of characters from artists to farmers to fisherman to prostitutes, and engages in lively discussions on everything from politics, sex, cigars, and, of course, on the aging revolutionary himself, Fidel Castro.Baker effectively captures the essence of the Cuban people--primarilytheir generosity and resilient spirit--and his various dalliances withbeautiful habaneras (Daisy, Sonia, and Juanita, to name a few) will piquereaders' interest (men's more than women's, understandably). By the timeBaker winds up back in Havana he has covered some 7,000 miles on hischerished bike. After reading Mi Moto Fidel, you'll no doubt be inspiredto hit the road. --Jill Fergus ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars First-rate
This is a very, very good book. It's even-handed, both praising and criticizing Cuba. It's fun. It's engaging. It's fascinating. It's interesting. I finished it with a much-better take on Cuba than I had going into it.

Cuba is a touchy subject. Lots of people on the Left prefer to overlook the negative, the fact of its being a police state. People on the Right see only the negative, but there are some positives. The author began his tour, he tells us, with a relatively positive view of Cuba. He finished it, three months later, far more conflicted.

Noteworthy is the sexual angle. As he notes at the end of the book, he was a single male on a motorcycle on a libertine island. He took advantage of the many opportunities for getting naked with good-looking women. More power to him. In the same situation, I would have done likewise.

It's amusing to read the fuddy-duddy reviews here, 99 percent from women, I wager, on this aspect of the book. I doubt I've seen so many tsk-tsks in one place in quite a while.

One thing that really stood out was, in spite of the author mentioning all the photos he snapped along the way, there are very few included in the book, and those that are included mostly are not very interesting. Shame.

He also came down with some nagging affliction about a third of the way into the tour. It even included coughing up blood. Cuban doctors along the way were clueless. So much for their famed medical system. The author mentions that the affliction, whatever it was, did not totally clear up until a year later. What was that affliction? He never tells us. I remain curious.

But, aside from the quibbles, this is one great and informative read. Buy it or, better yet, buy two and give one to a friend. A guy friend, not a gal. You'll just get a tsk-tsk from her.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Reading
In contrast to Mr. Baker's later book on Cuban Automobiles which I found a bit "less than expected", this one leaves out most of the pictures and is a fascinating account that makes excellent reading.Too much sex for a travel book? Try traveling as a single male with some signs of wealth and experience how often you will be propositioned. Even in my age bracket I have been told that I should always have a lady companion and that this could be immediately arranged. He accurately depicts the sweaty tourists, the double standards, the unfriendly government officials (Why does Cuba often sound like Mexico?) and the whole thing is just tremendous fun to read. Buy one for yourself, and a couple for your friends to give away.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great travel book
I happen to love great travel books and this was fantastic. It has beenfew years since I read this book but it was a fast and fun read. You get a real sense of the culture and the country. The book was always moving and that is what i like about travel books.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Ride!
Mr. Baker's book is riveting, entertaining, and educational. I am Cuban born and had visited Cuba prior to the "special period". Mr. Baker's account is fair and balanced and highlights the Castro regime's failures and accomplishments. For anyone wishing to find out what it is like in Cuba - look no further! It is a fabulous read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book
Although Baker is an unapologetic womanizer and takes avantage of many women who obviously want him so as to escape Cuba, the book is interesting in that it highlights many of the failures of the cuban revolution;the prostitution, bad food.Meanwhile, he catches the friendliness of the people. ...
