5-0 out of 5 stars A great jewelry book!
I borrowed this book from the library and I already like it. There's a ton of different styles,so that you'll never get bored. For the most part the jewelry looks pretty easy to make. There are some harder things too though. The instrucions are easy to follow with black and white pictures to show you how different techniques are done. There's a section in the back that tells you the basic beading tools and beads you need to have, what the tools are used for, techniques, and other helpful stuff. The jewelry is really cute and not old fashioned or anything. A lot of the stuff looks like something you'd buy at a store.I'd give this book 6 stars if I could! If you want to make jewelry I'd diffently buy this book!

4-0 out of 5 stars Introduce girls to the world of beads
This is a book of real beading techniques, using authentic beading supplies to introduce the world of beads and jewelry-making to young teens. There are lots of projects to choose from, including necklaces, earrings, bracelets, rings, headbands, ponytail holder, hair clips, etc. Most of the projects use seed beads, but many other beads can be used, too.Techniques show beading on jewelry wire, memory wire, and thread, and the use of standard supplies and tools such as crimp beads, clasps, pliers, and wire cutters.

There is only one true-life photo that shows the finished jewelry, and it's on the cover in color. However, in the photo, the teen model is wearing a ton of jewelry, and the details and styles cannot be seen. The same photo is shown enlarged on the first page of the book in black and white, but still does not give a clear idea of the finished products. The book would be so much more motivating if the projects were shown in color photographs. The black and white illustrated instructions are pretty good, simple and easy enough to follow, but the drawings result in a cartoon-like look, as if this is not an art, but "crafts for kids".

For girls (or boys) who are really interested in learning the art of jewelry beading, the book is really a great start. The book itself is not "pretty" or motivating, so the young beader will need to be able to envision the end product and follow the instructions and diagrams carefully.

1-0 out of 5 stars Major Disappointment
This book does not use the mechanism of time travel. What happens is that the protagonist, Poma, dies and is resurrected every ten years. She is supposed to be following the path to the color royal purple and her journeys take her to different time periods and different cultures. This book is not historically or culturally accurate. In one scene, when Poma is in Japan, she is taught the Japanese tea ceremony in about five to ten minutes. Not possible. When she is with a group of nomads, who are expert dyers through the use of herbs and other plants, there is a description of Poma sitting next to a field of crocuses. I researched that and there were crocuses in 480 A.D., but they were saffron crocuses. Saffron crocuses were very valuable and would have made the nomads wealthy, but apparently these experts in plant life never noticed a whole field of wealth sitting right next to them. There is no mention anywhere in the book that Poma learns anything other than medicine, dyeing, weaving, and knitting. Yet, when she is confronted by a wild animal, she miraculously pulls out a bow and arrow to shoot it. Poma does something that is called one-needle knitting. Actually, the correct name is nalbinding. Then in 1400s Constantinople, she is taught to knit with circular knitting needles. Sorry, but there is no archeological evidence that there were circular knitting needles in 1400s Constantinople - they are a modern invention. As a fiber artist, I was excited to find a time traveling fantasy novel dealing with the fiber arts. However, the cultural, scientific, and historical inaccuracies, along with editing inaccuracies and no richness of language (it reads like an outline for a book, not an actual book), made this a huge disappointment. I would not recommend it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Read
An incredible journey with time traveler Poma as she travels through skillfully woven history and cultures along the silk road in search of the Royal Purple. The loves and lives of Poma are engrossing in themselves and the visual scenes of another time and place add to the pleasure. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Last Summer at Barebones
This was a great book.Although it took me about 35 pages to get into it, it turned out to be one of my favorites. You really felt what the characters were going through. Most of us can relate to being teenagers and feeling left out or seeing what it was like for my parents to raise us in that time.I couldn't put the book down and would love to read more by Diane Baker Mason. Her writing reminds me of Wally Lamb.

5-0 out of 5 stars Barebones
To anyone who likes to laugh and cry all in one sitting I reccommend this book to you.A great novel; Diane Baker Mason really knows how to pull you into her characters and become attached to their unique personalities.A fantastic read from beginning to end......GO DEE

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Summer reading
"Last Summer at Barebones" is a perfect Summer book. I enjoyed the story and was rooting for Dee.
I do agree that the ending kind of stunk. It seemed too rushed.Other than that, great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing book can be hard to read
This book takes you right back to the 60's and 70's as quick as a time machine. But it's hard to read at times, because it's so gruellingly honest. Fortunately it's also extremely funny. The ending is a double whammy. Just when you think it's over she hits you again, in a different way. It's a really important book to read, especially for anyone who still feels bad because they were or are picked on for being fat. I couldn't put it down!

5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't have been better
Barebones (to me anyway) was about family -- how family members fit and relate, their perceptions of each other, their misperceptions about themselves. It's also a great growing up story.Characters were individuals with foibles and eccentricities. Mason made them lively and interesting (and sometimes silly) but even while she was poking fun at them, you could feel that she cared about them and respected them -- that's a neat trick.

And I had no problem with the ending -- it was plausible and it fit the characters. ... Read more

Product Description
Inspiration for I'm Different came from remembering her own experience of being the only child in her kindergarten classroom who wore glasses, and from watching the struggles of her children and her students while learning to accept themselves and their imperfections. The book is an attempt to defend children from a world where perfection reigns, image is defined by the media, and attention is merited and dispersed most generously to those who excel. The book's message is to help children see their imperfections, differences, and life's scars, both inner and outer, as evidence that their uniqueness is intended as a gift inspiring them to their greatest potential. ... Product Description
In our rushed, stressed society, it's sometimes difficult to spend meaningful time as a family. Now Starhawk, Diane Baker, and Anne Hill offer new ways to foster a sense of togetherness through celebrations that honor the sacredness of life and our Mother Earth.

Goddess tradition embraces the wheel of life, the never-ending cycle of birth, growth, love, fulfillment, and death. Each turn of the wheel is presented here, in eight holidays spanning the changing seasons, in rites of passage for life transitions, and in the elements of fire, air, water, earth, and spirit. Circle Round is rich with songs, rituals, craft and cooking projects, and read-aloud stories, as well as suggestions for how you can create your own unique family traditions. Here are just some of the ways to make each event in the cycle of life more special:

  • Mark Summer Solstice by making sweet-smelling herb pillows for good dreams
  • Send a teenager off to college with the Leaving Behind and Carrying With rituals
  • Comfort an injured child with the Tree of Life meditation
  • Commemorate a loved one by planting or donating a tree

As a one-of-a-kind resource for people of many faiths and beliefs, Circle Round will be a beloved companion in your home for years to come.
Amazon.com Review
The 20th-century reclamation of Goddess traditions has evolvedfrom a small counterculture revolution of the mid-1900s to thebirthright of an entire generation of children and youngteenagers. However, the parents--who were adults when they firstturned to paganism--are discovering that raising children in a pagantradition can prove difficult amidst the near void of resources toassist them in teaching this way of life. Relying on age-old learningmethods, such as songs and storytelling, Circle Round fillsthis void with techniques that are truly rooted in traditions. Thispriceless resource offers guidelines for helping children discover thedifferent facets of the Goddess tradition--from altars tosabbats--and suggests recipes, creative projects, and otheractivities resuscitating the values of family in our latchkeysociety. --Brian Patterson ...
