5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible Movie
Hilarious. Amitabh Bachchan is the man and Manmohan Desai is a great comedy director, extremely influential.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly absurd film marred by awful subtitles
This story of a family separated by chance and reunited by fate is widely and rightly considered a Bollywood classic. The film (three hours long -- short by Bollywood standards) is a wonderful exercise in absurdity, an amalgam of countless genres which manages to make some obvious but worthy observations about family and religion in its spare time. It's a Unitarian-Kung Fu-romcom-gangster-musical-revenge flick, directed by Manmohan Desai with visual flair and a winking understanding of the tropes he exploits. The acting is superb and ridiculous, and the titular brothers are given ample opportunity to shine. Amitabh Bachchan's Anthony (a charismatic and empathic Kung Fu Catholic) and Pran's grave Kishanlal are especially memorable. The villains are over the top, the song and dance numbers extravagant, the fight sequences utterly ludicrous. Can't recommend it enough. The movie's primary flaws lie in its length and the relative weakness of its female characters.

Unfortunately, the DVD release of the film is deeply problematic. The subtitles are truly dismal, failing to translate ALL of the songs and huge chunks of dialogue. English misspellings abound. The translation smacks of laziness, and one can only hope for a more definitive release at some point. Four or five star film, but it's difficult to recommend the DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Three brothers, three religions, three lots of fun
A wonderfully cheesy Hindi film from the late 1970s when flares were in vogue and disco ruled the world. Even now some 30 years on, this film still holds its own and is as charming now as it was then but with the added bonus of subtitles to help those people along whose Hindi is somewhat scratchy or in my case totally none existent.

This is a typical Hindi film with a zillion songs, lots of fancy dance routines along with the usual flimsy plot following the fate of three young brothers who find themselves being raised as a Hindu, Muslim and Christian respectively when they are separated from each other after their father goes on the run from the police and their mother disappears.

"Amar, Akbar, Anthony" is a film with no genre whatsoever; it is a drama, comedy, adventure, musical and love story all rolled into one, with the actors and actresses singing and dancing their way through a series of impossible events that culminate in everyone getting their girl, and the mother and father being reunited after 20 years apart.

This is escapism in its literal sense but it is great fun to watch and you will soon find yourself booing the baddies and cheering on the goodies. Oh yes this film has goodies and baddies, kidnapped girls (who happen to be very beautiful) and heroic rescues from burning buildings, the odd miracle or two, along with a forced marriage, one funeral, an act of vengeance and a delightful scene of riding off into the sunset that will have you laughing and cheering from beginning to end.

With an excellent cast of characters playing the lead roles, all you can do is sit back, pop open a bag of pakoras and munch your way through Hindi movie heaven. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bunty aur Babli, they be kickin' it
I absolutely had to have Bunty aur Babli for Aishwarya Rai's sizzling cameo appearance in the musical number Kajra Re (a song which took India and my little piece of America by storm), but I really enjoyed this movie on its own merits.Yes, the story is a tad far-fetched, but who cares? This is Bollywood, after all. We're talking great performances (including those of the formidable father-son tandem of Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan), incredible songs, and lots of laughs.Rani Mukerji, an actress I was unfamiliar with, proved to be nothing short of delightful (even during her several crying jags). This really is a movie you can enjoy over and over again.

Rakesh (Abhishek Bachchan) and Vimmi (Rani Mukerji) represent many a village youth who dream of thwarting tradition and finding wealth and fame in the big city.Rakesh comes from Fursatganj in Uttar Pradesh, and he is a born schemer always on the make for a big idea.Vimmi, from Pankinagar, dreams of being a supermodel and can't stand the thought of being forced into a marriage with someone she doesn't even like. Both Rakesh and Vimmi decide to run away to realize their dreams, but their plans are quickly squashed in Lucknow. Then fate draws them together, and Bunty and Babli are born.Setting their sites on Bombay, they con a man who scammed Rakesh out of a lot of money in order to get the travel funds they need.It doesn't stop there, though, as they fully embrace their Bunty and Babli personas, gaining widespread notoriety from all of the increasingly elaborate and highly profitable schemes they pull off. They soon become cult heroes of a sort to the youth of the country, as even the most powerful of men and women fall victim to their daring plans. They even succeed in "leasing" the Taj Mahal to a fabulously wealthy American businessman for his wedding. They can be anyone or anybody, from real estate tycoons to tour guides to spiritual gurus to government ministers. So, yes, they technically are desperately wanted criminals - but you can't help but love them as they run their scams, argue back and forth, and eventually fall in love. One man who doesn't love them, though, is DCP Dasbrath Singh (Amitabh Bachchan), who devotes himself to bringing Bunty and Babli to justice.

The music of this film is amazing.Kajra Re was a huge hit, but it's only one of several fantastic songs to be found here.Dhadhak Dhadhak sets the stage of the main characters' optimism and determination to pursue their dreams, while the title track manages to epitomize their irresistible personalities. As for just how big those dreams are, the elaborate Broadway-esque musical number Nach Baliye gives you a pretty good idea.Nach Baliye doesn't get mentioned as much as the other musical numbers, but I absolutely love this infectiously energetic song.Chup Chupke is a wonderful love song that beautifully frames Bunty and Babli's romantic relationship. And, of course, there is there is the rap song B n B (performed by Blaaze), which features Amitabh "Uncle D" Bachchan in the promotional video that also runs alongside the closing credits.

Like many Bollywood releases, Bunty aur Babli features a bonus DVD full of wonderful extras. This hours' worth of material includes the B n B video featuring Amitabh Bachchan, an MTV "Making of" look behind the scenes of the B n B video, a feature on "The Making of Bunty aur Babli," a number of deleted scenes and outtakes, a look at the official music release for the film, a theatrical trailer, and a number of television promos. It's just an embarrassment of riches that makes this a must-have item for any and all Bollywood fans.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just a lot of fun, if you're willing to suspend disbelief
Bunty aur Babli is the story of two small town kids with bigger aspirations. They meet up while trying and failing to achieve their dreams. The young man gets cheated out of his dream, so together they cheat the man who cheated them.Taking on the pseudonyms Bunty and Babli, they travel around India, dressing up as various types and stereotypes, defrauding people of their money.

In real life, many of the scams the characters run would never work.In real life, they would have been caught within a matter of months, because the would have been easily recognized.Reel life in Bollywood, however, is a different matter. The police officer trying to track them down says that nobody knows what they look like.(Really, their disguises aren't that good). But if you are willing to ignore these factors, the movie is a lot of fun to watch.

The acting by Abhishek Bachchan as Bunty is great, and his father, Amitabh, as the police officer is also great. The film makes a couple of jokes about their real life relationship.Rani Mukerji is a bit disappointing in this role. She has done better.

The music, possibly the most important part of a film in this genre, is good fun.

One criticism about the DVD is that there are no Hindi subtitles. This is true of almost all Hindi films. What do hearing impaired Hindi speakers do?

3-0 out of 5 stars UMM...IT'S OKAAAY...BUT THANK GOODNESS FOR AISHWARYA RAI
I guess it was bound to happen. This is gonna be the first Bollywood film I'm rating as less than 5 stars ('course, I only started viewing Bollywood not more than 2 months ago). Bunty Aur Babli is a so-so film, about 2 and a half hours long, and is definitely more of a rental. Hated to say that because I'm becoming a fan of Abhishek Bachchan, whom I've seen in Kuch Naa Kaho and Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke, two most definitely superior movies.

So, the plot: Rakesh (Abhishek Bachchan) is a man determined to escape his humdrum, small-city life and opts to leave home when given an ultimatum by his father to either show up in a job interview or not come home at all. Rakesh, you see, has come up with the perfect business scheme, which he believes will propel him to immediate financial success. Meet also Vimmi (Rani Mukerji), who wants more of life than to become a typical arranged bride and thus runs away, pursuing her dream to become Miss India. Both of these young hopefuls' plans go awry. Then they meet and Rakesh and Vimmi become Bunty and Babli, scammers extraordinaire, bilking people of their riches and then sharing the wealth with the poor and downtrodden. Halfway thru the film enters Dashrath Singh, a stoic, bulldog of a policeman played in full taciturn glory by iconic actor and Abhishek's father, Amitabh Bachchan. The remainder of the film tells of DCP Singh's frustrated attempts to capture the carefree criminals, who had by then become modern day legends.

This is my first time watching Amitabh Bachchan, who is big in India and, frankly, I found him only serviceable, as I did the rest of the cast. I've noted that I've become a fan of young Abhishek Bachchan, but in this effort, while he doesn't embarass himself, I feel that he isn't as good as he was in the other movies I've seen; Rani Mukerji is cute fluff, whose acting is basically good here but who, at one point, annoyed me with her incessant, unconvincing crying. Incidentally, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this might be the first movie that both the Bachchans have been in.

The musical numbers, I must admit, took turns in alternately grating on my nerves or boring me to a clock-watching frenzy ("isn't this dang song over yet, already?"). There are only 2 musical numbers I enjoyed. One ("B & B) takes place in the closing credits, with an MTV-like video of the elder Bachchan portraying his policeman character rapping/lipsynching in English - it cracked me up. The other one is the penultimate number, "Kajra Re" (Night Eyes), a specialty item featuring Aishwarya Rai, wherein she engages the two Bachchans in a smoking dancefest - very cool, with Aish very hot. Three minutes of this lovely creature will make the viewer forget all about the movies's female lead, old what's-her-face? To be utterly honest, Ms. Rai is the main reason I purchased this movie and, yup indeedy, she raises my eval of this flick from an initial 2 and a half stars to a full 3 stars. Someday I plan to marry her and then we'll reside in a glorious castle on the moon.

To sum up, Bunty Aur Babli is a good-natured, pleasant enough viewing experience, with no airs of self-importance or grandeur. It cheerfully knows what it is and hams itself up to the hilt. It won't challenge your mind or tug at your emotions. It definitely won't make you think or fall into a deep reverie. But if you've got nothing better to do one evening, pop this musical-comedy dvd in, sit back, suspend critical judgement as hard as you can (remember, this is Bollywood), fastforward thru the musical numbers if they get to be too much, and be gentleon the actors. They're all better than this movie. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Media and the Political Nexus
RamGopal Verma or RGV as he is known makes movies that have class ( Satya, Company) or crass ( Sholay remake, Agyaat).Nothing is certain from this filmmaker as he is consistently inconsistent. Rann has been portrayed to be a movie about the media and the dirty games that they play to beef up their ratings or TRP's as they are known in India.
An respected and ethical newsman Vijay Harshvardhan Malik( Amitabh Bacchan ) helming India 24x7a news channel is struggling with falling ratings and competitors who are increasingly successful because they are dishing out news in the form of entertainment. One of their competitors is a former employee Amrish Kakkar ( Mohnish Behl ) who is stealing away market share with a vengeance. Malik's son Jai Malik ( Sudeep) begins to worry and to make matters worse, the ideas for future television projects are being used by Kakkar for his own TV station because of a mole at India 24//7. Jai Malik has been borrowing heavily from the market to fund these ventures and findsthe media empire on the verge of bankruptcy. The rescuers come in the form of his brother in-law ( Rajat Kapoor) and Pandey ( Paresh Rawal) who hatch a sensational scheme to save the company and sows seeds of a political change...
The movie was absorbing from the start and gets the Sarkar treatment, close-up camera angles with blurred faces, the jarring music and long shots with the subjects in the background.
The directions is superb and there is not a single dull moment in the movie, there are lot of movie liberties to the plot, for example how does a veteran journalist just air a story without verifying its source, but they are plot treatments to move the story forward.
The music is very funky and it has been composed by a bunch of music composers, this makes it unique because the styles are different. The lyrics are satirical and in some parts actually move the story forward.
Amitabh Bachchan and Paresh Rawal are efficient as usual and deliver fine performances- So what is new about this.
Sudeep an actor from the South, who plays Amitabh's son manages to hold his own and is competent.
Mohnish Behl is a revelation, although he has found immense success on the small screen. He still manages to act and look well. RajPal Yadav plays the role of a newscaster and is part-funny in some scenes. I actually managed a chuckle...
Riteish Deshmukh is surprisingly tolerable. The women are wasted....
Ram Gopal Verma should be proud of this one.....I gave it four stars. 5/23/10

5-0 out of 5 stars Rajesh Khanna at His Best - A Classic
Rajesh Khanna's best role by far, an award-winning performance that could easily have felt maudlin, calculated and cyncical. Instead, Khanna finds the humor and the humanity in his portrayal of a dying man who embraces life more energetically than those around him, including an embittered doctor (Amitabh Bachchan). In the process, he changes their lives even he ends his. The vital center of the movie is the growing friendship between Khanna and Bachchan, whose intensity though platonic is almost romantic and tinged with homo-eroticism. The sublimated attraction is captured in the astonishingly romantic "Meine Tere Liye Hi", sung by Khanna and directed at Bacchan. Even in the 1970s, it was clear, though rarely discussed, that there was more unresolved here than simply the tragedy of a man who doesn't deserve to die. The miracle of Khanna's performance: he nails the introverted moments of his gregarious character -- moments, almost always captured in song, that let us feel his immense struggle, sadness and, finally, existential loneliness. About halfway through Anand, the immortal "Zindagi Kaisi Hein Paheli" will have you tearful and exuberant at the same time, with more of these powerful emotions still to come. A one of-a-kind Bollywood classic. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Must See
Mothers and their enduring, sacrificial love have long been celebrated in Indian films. In Baabul, fathers get a turn at admiration. The title is a Hindi term of affection used by daughters for their dads. However, the film starts out as a story about a father and son who are best friends--Balraj (played by Amitabh Bachchan) and Avi (Salman Khan). Avi falls in love with an artist named Milli (Rani Mukerji) and marries her. Although Avi is pretty cheesy and his courtship of Milli saccharine sweet, he's so smitten with her, so devoted to his dad, and eventually so attentive to his own son, that you can't help but like the guy. When the story takes a sharp turn halfway through the film, we learn the extent of Balraj's paternal love, this time for his daughter-in-law, as he goes to great lengths--at the expense of tradition and his family's sense of honor--to ensure her happiness. The main actors--all giants in the Hindi film industry--are at their charismatic best. Baabul is a melodramatic masterpiece and a tribute to selfless fatherhood. - The Bollywood Ticket: The American guide to Indian movies (Subscribe: The Bollywood Ticket)

2-0 out of 5 stars Boring
I didn't care all that much for this movie. Its a superficial look at being a widow and remarriage. Unless you are a fan of the actors I'd give this one a pass.
As far as performances I really can't say too much positive about any of them. Bachchan has played this role a million times before and has done so better.Rani doesn't have the depth or the sensitivity to portray these types of characters. My opinion of her performance here is the same as with KANK.I don't find myself sympathizing with her characters despite the bucketfull of tears she's shed in both roles.Salman was playing Salman. Seriously, why do directors keep casting him. His relationship with Rani's character had zero credibility with me.John Abraham was okay but besides looking good, he really doesn't bring much to the character. He can't even dance and that's a no no when your a Bollywood actor.
Overall, this movie was one big dull experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars Slow....
This movie actually gets 3 and a ½ stars. The first hour and a half of the movie is spent just getting Rani Mukherjee and Salman Khan married. Before marriage, Rani Mukherjee plays this stuffy, rude and uptight character. But for some reason, we are supposed to think her character is cute.I don't think if someone was going to marry me and they called my Dad a "sanki buda" (senile old man) it would be cute at all.But after marriage, her character improves. There is even no conflict in this movie until the last 15 minutes, and even that gets solved in this unconvincing 5 minute speech.John Abraham is average, so is Salman Khan.Hema Malini's voice drags in some areas and Amitabh Bachan does a pretty good job overall. The good thing about this movie is that it was light hearted and nice to watch. But it does not really have a story or any situation. ... Read more

The starting song "Waqt Par Bolna" is the only one that seems be very impressive from the whole album. Maine Teri aankhon...is another one that's good. Keseriya...a popular Rajasthani folk song was sung by many others and after listening to those, I wondered why this was chosen into this album..and since it was a known one, Hariharan could have improvised more. Most of the other song lyrics didn't blend into the music at all.

I am sure this is definitely a disappointment for all HariHaran fans. At least I was very disappointed.
