"Sway This Way"

'Jhoom Barabar' is an overall entertaining film of serendipity and kismet unfolding between two strangers who happen to meet at a busy cafe while waiting for a train. A conversation soon ensues and to pass the time they attempt to impress each other by making up an imaginary, romantic tale. They both claim to be waiting for their future mate and express how deliriously happy they are. As you might expect in the course of events they fall in love with each other during the wait and now must swallow their pride and find a way express their true feelings for each other. Neither wanting to let the other know their stories where made up they arrange to meet again and bring along their significant others. Will they continue their mutual charades and lose each other forever or will they find the courage to express their true feelings for each other?

Abhishek Bachchan (Rikki) and Preity Zintal (Alvira) do a solid and believable job of portraying two chance, smitten romantics but I actually preferred the performances of Lara Dutta and Bobby Deol as their make believe lovers. However what really made the movie for me was the four or five intermittent appearances by the legendary Amitabh Bachchan in the whimsical role of a dancing, singing sprite who apparently has some mystical cupid-like connection with the budding relationship between Rikki and Alvira.

Solid production values, recognizable cast and an excellent soundtrack make 'Jhoom Barabar' and easy and enjoyable watch. My rating: -3 Stars-.

Worst Movie Ever
This movie is a complete waste of time... would never ever watch it again even if someone paid me to do so... can't believe it's a Yash Raj production.Honestly, this movie doesn't deserve even a single star.

Disappointing Movie
I was expecting so much from this movie. Especially after watching the previews. I went to see this movie in the theater. What a huge disappointment. This is one of the first Yash Raj films that actually bored me to sleep. The first half was so boring, I wanted to walk out the movie cinema.Finally the second half had a little dancing but that was it.
The music of this movie was nice. Not worth it to buy this dvd. rent it first.I give this movie 3 stars for the music and dancing, not the story line.

Worth Watching
While 'Sarkar Raj' is the sequel to 'Sarkar,' which was based on 'The Godfather,' this film was not based on 'The Godfather Part II,' but there are still many allusions to it. In this sequel, the father, Sarkar (Amitabh Bachchan), is alive and well and calling the shots, but he's preparing to hand over the reins to his son, Shankar (Abhishek Bachchan), who's now deeply entrenched in the family business he once eschewed. As the story progresses, Shankar becomes less of a clear-cut surrogate for Michael and more of a curious amalgamation of all three Corleone brothers. Enter Anita (played by Abhishek's wife Aishwarya Rai)--and she's no compliant Kay, but tough and sharp, playing with the big boys in her power suits--Shankar's equal in every way. The characters are fascinating and the performances top-notch, but the plot--involving shady businessmen, corrupt politicians, and gangsters jockeying to build a lucrative power plant--is as dry as day-old toast. SARKAR RAJ is the 2008 political/crime drama sequel to Sarkar, which was a ferocious 2005 Hindi take on The Godfather (Widescreen Edition). The principal actors are back, specifically, real-life father and son actors Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan. Gorgeous Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek's new bride, jumps on board, as well. As in SARKAR, there aren't any musical numbers here, or lowbrow comedy or much of a romance. You're supposed to take this movie very seriously.

Not a crime lord as much as an unofficial but very influential governing power in his own right, Subhash Nagare (Amitabh Bachchan) has ruled and controlled the destinies of his people for decades. Much like in THE GODFATHER, the citizens of Mumbai approached Subhash for a solution or an arbitration to their difficulties. SARKAR told of Subhash's time coming to an end as an active power and his passing the torch to his son, Shankar (Abhishek). SARKAR RAJ opens a few years later, with Shankar Nagare having settled into his new role, changed and hardened and more decisive. Yet he still very much cares for the welfare of his people.

Entrepreneur Anita Rajan (Aishwarya Rai) heads up the sweeping Sheppard power plant project, of which proposal she presents to Shankar. However, the optimum site for the power plant lies in rural Maharashtra, which means that 40,000 villagers would have to be displaced for the plant to be built. But Shankar is quick to see the long term advantages for the ever struggling populace of Maharashtra. He talks his reluctant father into consenting to the project, and off Shankar goes to talk to the villagers.

But he soon meets resistance in the form of local dissident Sanjay Somji, who has his own daunting connections. Somji uses verbal histrionics to sway the masses to his side, and the violent demonstrations promptly begin. The Nagares' power base has always been rooted in the high regard and trust accorded to them by the common people. Insidiously, an unknown agent starts to whittle away at that power base. And I think I'll stop right there, except to say that all this stuff so far is only the tip of the iceberg. There are some serious machinations going down in this film.

First off, while SARKAR RAJ isn't quite as good as SARKAR, it's still dang watchable. Especially if you've seen SARKAR and are curious about the Nagares' further exploits. It's a fine crime drama and political thriller, even with its slow spots. SARKAR RAJ explores the nature of power - the wielding of it, the erosion it has on the soul, the jealousies it instills in others. The Nagares have remained true to their ideals, even if it means that those ideals are kept alive thru ruthless acts. In a gray world, the Nagares are who the common people turn to, for succor and for judgment. That is power, willingly granted.

SARKAR RAJ boasts stylish filmmaking, polished cinematography, confident acting. The movie looks very good on screen, awash in sepia tones and in brooding shadows, most of which dramatically frame the many close-ups of the Bachchans. Speaking of whom, the Bachchans show off their considerable acting chops, with Abhishek very intense and his dad masterfully taking over in the film's last half hour or so. Aishwarya Rai (it's weird adding a Bachchan at the end of her name) is decent for most of the film, but really gets good in the latter stages. Her last scene, as she comfortably asks for tea in the Nagare household, helps to set up a possible sequel. By the way, this is the first film which co-stars Aish and Abhishek since they got married.

Okay, now the downside. SARKAR RAJ is two hours and five minutes long, and, at times, the film's length presses on you. The story really takes its sweet time developing. Furthermore, the soundtrack tends to go overboard with the ominous "Govinda, Govinda" chorus. After a while, you'll probably get tired of it. There are several scenes between Abhishek and Aishwarya which come off as trite, specifically those dealing with Shankar confiding to Anita, where you could see the subtext of Anita beginning to feel sappy emotions. All in all, the romantic subplot between Shankar and Anita is kind of kicked to the curb. Come to think of it, the same goes for the relationship between Shankar and his wife.

I'll say, though, that the ending is very satisfying, with the wrathful Sarkar putting the pieces of the conspiracy together and then proceeding to get his sweet vengeance on. I say, three and a half stars for SARKAR RAJ, as again the Bachchans demonstrate why they are the preeminent acting family in India. ... Read more

Bunty aur Babli, they be kickin' it
I absolutely had to have Bunty aur Babli for Aishwarya Rai's sizzling cameo appearance in the musical number Kajra Re (a song which took India and my little piece of America by storm), but I really enjoyed this movie on its own merits.Yes, the story is a tad far-fetched, but who cares?This is Bollywood, after all.We're talking great performances (including those of the formidable father-son tandem of Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan), incredible songs, and lots of laughs.Rani Mukerji, an actress I was unfamiliar with, proved to be nothing short of delightful (even during her several crying jags).This really is a movie you can enjoy over and over again.

The music of this film is amazing.Kajra Re was a huge hit, but it's only one of several fantastic songs to be found here.Dhadhak Dhadhak sets the stage of the main characters' optimism and determination to pursue their dreams, while the title track manages to epitomize their irresistible personalities.As for just how big those dreams are, the elaborate Broadway-esque musical number Nach Baliye gives you a pretty good idea.Nach Baliye doesn't get mentioned as much as the other musical numbers, but I absolutely love this infectiously energetic song.Chup Chupke is a wonderful love song that beautifully frames Bunty and Babli's romantic relationship.And, of course, there is there is the rap song B n B (performed by Blaaze), which features Amitabh "Uncle D" Bachchan in the promotional video that also runs alongside the closing credits.

Like many Bollywood releases, Bunty aur Babli features a bonus DVD full of wonderful extras.This hours' worth of material includes the B n B video featuring Amitabh Bachchan, an MTV "Making of" look behind the scenes of the B n B video, a feature on "The Making of Bunty aur Babli," a number of deleted scenes and outtakes, a look at the official music release for the film, a theatrical trailer, and a number of television promos.It's just an embarrassment of riches that makes this a must-have item for any and all Bollywood fans.

Just a lot of fun, if you're willing to suspend disbelief
Bunty aur Babli is the story of two small town kids with bigger aspirations.They meet up while trying and failing to achieve their dreams.The young man gets cheated out of his dream, so together they cheat the man who cheated them.Taking on the pseudonyms Bunty and Babli, they travel around India, dressing up as various types and stereotypes, defrauding people of their money.

In real life, many of the scams the characters run would never work.In real life, they would have been caught within a matter of months, because the would have been easily recognized.Reel life in Bollywood, however, is a different matter.The police officer trying to track them down says that nobody knows what they look like.(Really, their disguises aren't that good).But if you are willing to ignore these factors, the movie is a lot of fun to watch.

The acting by Abhishek Bachchan as Bunty is great, and his father, Amitabh, as the police officer is also great.The film makes a couple of jokes about their real life relationship.Rani Mukerji is a bit disappointing in this role.She has done better.

The music, possibly the most important part of a film in this genre, is good fun.

One criticism about the DVD is that there are no Hindi subtitles.This is true of almost all Hindi films.What do hearing impaired Hindi speakers do?

UMM...IT'S OKAAAY...BUT THANK GOODNESS FOR AISHWARYA RAI
I guess it was bound to happen. This is gonna be the first Bollywood film I'm rating as less than 5 stars ('course, I only started viewing Bollywood not more than 2 months ago). Bunty Aur Babli is a so-so film, about 2 and a half hours long, and is definitely more of a rental. Hated to say that because I'm becoming a fan of Abhishek Bachchan, whom I've seen in Kuch Naa Kaho and Dhaai Akshar Prem Ke, two most definitely superior movies.

So, the plot: Rakesh (Abhishek Bachchan) is a man determined to escape his humdrum, small-city life and opts to leave home when given an ultimatum by his father to either show up in a job interview or not come home at all. Rakesh, you see, has come up with the perfect business scheme, which he believes will propel him to immediate financial success. Meet also Vimmi (Rani Mukerji), who wants more of life than to become a typical arranged bride and thus runs away, pursuing her dream to become Miss India. Both of these young hopefuls' plans go awry. Then they meet and Rakesh and Vimmi become Bunty and Babli, scammers extraordinaire, bilking people of their riches and then sharing the wealth with the poor and downtrodden. Halfway thru the film enters Dashrath Singh, a stoic, bulldog of a policeman played in full taciturn glory by iconic actor and Abhishek's father, Amitabh Bachchan. The remainder of the film tells of DCP Singh's frustrated attempts to capture the carefree criminals, who had by then become modern day legends.

This is my first time watching Amitabh Bachchan, who is big in India and, frankly, I found him only serviceable, as I did the rest of the cast. I've noted that I've become a fan of young Abhishek Bachchan, but in this effort, while he doesn't embarass himself, I feel that he isn't as good as he was in the other movies I've seen; Rani Mukerji is cute fluff, whose acting is basically good here but who, at one point, annoyed me with her incessant, unconvincing crying. Incidentally, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this might be the first movie that both the Bachchans have been in.

The musical numbers, I must admit, took turns in alternately grating on my nerves or boring me to a clock-watching frenzy ("isn't this dang song over yet, already?"). There are only 2 musical numbers I enjoyed. One ("B & B) takes place in the closing credits, with an MTV-like video of the elder Bachchan portraying his policeman character rapping/lipsynching in English - it cracked me up. The other one is the penultimate number, "Kajra Re" (Night Eyes), a specialty item featuring Aishwarya Rai, wherein she engages the two Bachchans in a smoking dancefest - very cool, with Aish very hot. Three minutes of this lovely creature will make the viewer forget all about the movies's female lead, old what's-her-face? To be utterly honest, Ms. Rai is the main reason I purchased this movie and, yup indeedy, she raises my eval of this flick from an initial 2 and a half stars to a full 3 stars. Someday I plan to marry her and then we'll reside in a glorious castle on the moon.

To sum up, Bunty Aur Babli is a good-natured, pleasant enough viewing experience, with no airs of self-importance or grandeur. It cheerfully knows what it is and hams itself up to the hilt. It won't challenge your mind or tug at your emotions. It definitely won't make you think or fall into a deep reverie. But if you've got nothing better to do one evening, pop this musical-comedy dvd in, sit back, suspend critical judgement as hard as you can (remember, this is Bollywood), fastforward thru the musical numbers if they get to be too much, and be gentleon the actors. A great, simple, Bollywood film
This is a romantic comedy film from India that's just a bit of light-hearted fun. The acting in it is quite good and it features two of India's biggest stars in the main roles. The movie is quite funny and it's something good for a rainy afternoon in where you don't want something sad and dramatic.

As for the "2-disc set" part. My movie came packaged with one disc in the case--the disc that contains the film. The other disc, presumably a soundtrack disc since I've received those for Bollywood films before, came completely blank and unlabeled wrapped in a bit of newspaper. I haven't tried using it yet. I don't mind, personally, since it was so inexpensive and the movie came promptly. All I really wanted was the movie. But if you have your heart set on a fancy 2-disc set with a nice, official, soundtrack disc, don't bet on it in this case. ... Read more

"Hey na! Hey na!"
DUS ("Ten") is a Bollywood production which came out in 2005, and it's a glossy and exciting motion picture. From the start, I had a feeling I was gonna like DUS. It opens with a very catchy and kinetic musical number "Dus Bahane" which sets the stage for the film's ensuing display of sheer bravado, style, and slam bang fireworks.

There's a lot going on in this action thriller. Here's the plot: It is May the 4th in Delhi. All that is known is that, on the 10th of May, seven days hence, an act of terrorism will be committed that is so catastrophic it'll produce 25,000 casualties in its wake. The desperate agents of the ATC (the elite Anti-Terrorist Cell department) go all out in their attempt to find out who, what, and where. But all they have is one name: "Jamwal." It's not enough.

Luckily, they catch a break. A female agent named Neha (Esha Deol), stationed in Calgary, Canada, informs ATC commanding officer Siddhant Dheer (Sanjay Dutt) of a recently apprehended associate of Jamwal. Siddhant sends to Calgary two of his top operatives, his younger, no-nonsense brother Shashank (Abhishek Bachchan), who's a sharpshooter, and the cocky, fun loving explosives expert, Aditya Singh (Zayed Khan). Their mission is to nab Jamwal's associate and compel him to divulge Jamwal's whereabouts. But Shashank and Aditya's stay in Canada begins ominously as they almost immediately run afoul of an intense local policeman (Suniel Shetty).

Meanwhile, back in Delhi, a traitor lurks in the midst of the ATC even as Siddhant's sister and her fiance are kidnapped. Siddhant, unable to trust anyone, is forced to work outside official lines and go it alone. Meanwhile, inexorably, the days count down...

DUS director Anubhav Sinha makes full use of his past career as a music video director as he goes nuts with the splashy editing. This movie simply exudes a near elegant, action oriented aura of slickness. There's no dearth ofimprobable stunts, wild shoot-outs, and gratuitous slo-mo shots here (because it's a universal truth that heroes who stride in slow motion while clad in black are infinitely more cool). That the MTV-influenced style and hip cinematography serve to cloak the rather pedestrian plot certainly isn't enough of an indictment for me to turn up my nose at the film. It is what it is, and, for what it's worth, despite the holes and predictable elements in the film structure, the performances of the key actors make up for a lot of the flaws. Too, I was actually startled at the identity of the villain. That, for me, was a bonus.

Sanjay Dutt is the prohibitive lead here, though there are several other male stars in this feature. Dutt's character graces the screen with a mature presence and world weary authority. He's very good. Abhishek Bachchan, son of the iconic Amitabh Bachchan, continues to make his own mark as he turns in another excellent performance as the terse-spoken younger brother. Script- and story-wise, his role of Shashank is barely fleshed out, but the tall and lean Abhishek, putting his charisma to good use, still manages to turn it into something worth watching. Zayed Khan is still fairly new to the movie scene (his first film was in 2003), but he's got potential. As the brash, sunglasses-wearing Aditya, Khan oozes sex appeal and a certain likableness, although it's worth noting that even though he's touted as an explosives expert, he actually only manages to diffuse one bomb. Meanwhile, Suniel Shetty shows up for his paycheck.

All but one of the female actors are forgettable, possibly due to lack of screen time. Let's face it, DUS is a testosterone-laden action flick, directed at the menfolk, so the romances become dispensable. However, I can't help but drop a snide mention that I haven't seen Esha Deol in a consistently good performance yet. The sole exception to the unmemorable female turnout is Shilpa Shetty, she of the oh-so-sexy Batman tattoo. Shilpa shines as the ultra capable Aditi, the only female agent in the ATC and who harbors a love for the ATC head cheese. Of the other supporting roles, the only other one which makes an impression is Pankaj Kapoor, who plays the key witness part, somewhat reminiscent of Joe Pesci in the LETHAL WEAPON series.

Anubhav Sinha may've been a music video director, but he knows DUS is predominantly an action thriller. Thus, he minimally caters to the Bollywood penchant for musical numbers, inserting only three tracks here. All three numbers are pretty good, but the best one is, of course, the aforementioned "Dus Bahane" (I can't stop humming it).

So, I've got the 2 dvd set. Disc 1 is the feature film. Disc 2 provides us with the following features: the 17-minute-long "Making Of"; a bonus song "Janiya Ve" which spotlights the love lives of Dan (the Calgary cop), Shashank, and Aditya; a photo gallery; and the theatrical trailer. Honestly, this second dvd is only worth seeing for the "Making Of" segment, enough of which is in English. The dvd package also comes with a character background handbook.

By no means is DUS a perfect film. For one thing, there's a sackful of plot inconsistencies in this one. For example, I can't believe the agents would nonchalantly release their witness, just as they did. Also, the agents seem to cave in too easily when the Canadian cop insisted that they and their kidnapped witness stay in his house. Then, there's the unlikely coincidence of the Canadian cop's wife and the content of her car's busted trunk. Evidently, the screenwriter wasn't planning on writing a cogent, sensible story as much as distracting the audience with a sleight-of-hand blending of polished action sequences, wild and wooly stunts (a furious car chase gives a small nod to SPEED), and quick-cut cinematic sensibilities which must've been intended for the A.D.D. generation. Well, what can I say? Count me part of that last group as I was simply enthralled by the gloss, the excitement, the energy, and the star power of DUS. Yeah, it might be shallow and implausible, but, hot damn, it's just so entertaining. And, again, in terms of style, DUS knocks it out of the park. Four stars for this one, despite Suniel Shetty and Esha Deol.

Better Than Any Bond Movie
I basically agree with everything said by the guy who gave it one star. Yet, it was better than any of the James Bond movies, even with Sean Connery. I mean, do any of the stars in the non-Indian movies cited dance? What I love most about Indian movies are the costumes and the dancing. The best dancing scenes are usually not ones that use MTV style but this one had sheer energy. I like the dances that use older costumes and a mix of traditional (the original Chori Chori) and modern. There are more beautiful women and better dancers than those in Dhoom, but this one has chemistry. India has great serious movies with no dancing scenes and none of the cliches, but for entertainment value I loved this one. The male stars were better than any in American movies. And no one even mentioned the copy of Busby Berkeley dance numbers.

You've probably seen this before
The wild mash of styles, the lavish musical numbers, the sentimental slop, the predictable plots - they're what make Bollywood movies unique.I don't expect to be challenged or enlightened; I expect only to be amused for two to three hours.

Dhoom couldn't even do that.

The story of a policeman and a gang of motorcycle-riding bank robbers who work as pizza delivery men, the film is a transparent pastiche of elements taken from more popular films.It borrows quite a lot from the 1998 French film Taxi, about a pizza delivery boy with great mechanical skills who builds a suped-up taxi, which he races through the streets of Marseille before being caught and forced by the police to help them chase a gang of bank robbers, much like the character of the bike mechanic in Dhoom. The bank robbery scenes borrow from the Tom Cruise Mission Impossible series, and most of the fights are copied directly from The Matrix, including slow motion bullets and fisticuffs on top of a moving tractor trailer.Appropriately enough for the cartoonish script, the lead actors have little to do but produce tough-guy glares, and the comic side-kick but to fall down, make funny faces, and take a few blows from the leads.The music and dance numbers are unremarkable, although a remix of the title track played over the final titles did quite well in the Indian market and is perhaps the most memorable bit of music from this sad excuse of a movie.

Given that Dhoom is such an utter waste of time, talent, and money, it's probably not surprising that it was a huge hit with the Indian public and has now spawned an even bigger sequel, with promises of a third installment to be released in 2008.This must be to the great delight of director Sanjay Gadhvi, who until Dhoom was a little known film-maker whose only noteworthy project was the 2002 release, Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai, a shameless copy of the 1997 Hollywood production, My Best Friend's Wedding.

Rock Em Sock Em Bollywood Style
I had a lot of fun watching this movie on an iced-in day. The fact that it pretty much clips along at 2 hours really helped the adrenaline rush. I thought the actors were all good in their roles ( Uday Chopra is a slight exception, but that's also because I really hate the bumbling comic relief guy that's trotted out in movies like these. Still the buddy-movie vibe between him and Abishek is nice). John Abraham is totally hot as the mysterious thief Kabir, and the bike stunts are the true stars of the movie and acquit themselves well. The songs are all high-energy and well-choreographed. I am glad they didn't try to shoehorn in a "sad song" etc. The film-makers did a pretty good job keeping everything ( styling, stunts, music, etc) to the character of the movie. I'll be curious to see if the blockbuster casting of dhoom 2 canmaintain the peculiar excitement of the movie or if it will fall victim to the "bigger!better!" syndrome. No matter, as long as there's at least one shirtless villain to gawk at. C'mon, all the Indian movies I watched as a kid featured hairy, pudgy dudes. I'm way overdue for my Indian eyecandy.

Formulaic but stylish, it's actually pretty neat
There's really nothing original about DHOOM. It's a slick-looking action film done up Bollywood style, and if you're prepared to go into this film with that Bollywood mindset, you won't be surprised by the derivative plot, the sometimes broad humor, the prerequisite cheesiness, and the PG-13 sensibilities. Dhoom steals moments from THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS, MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE, OCEAN'S ELEVEN, and even from THE MATRIX. And, because it's a Bollywood offering, it's got a smattering of musical numbers. The thing is, I'm actually recommending this movie. Yeah, it's hokey, and lacks in freshness, and certain scenes made me groan. And yet, overall, I enjoyed it.

Maybe it's because, before I even saw it, DHOOM had already garnered some good will from me by having as its lead star Abhishek Bachchan, my favorite actor in Indian cinema. Also apart of DHOOM's allure is the undeniable eye candy provided by the two lovely ladies, Esha Deol & Rimi Sen (Ohh, Mama!), and the fact that I thought Bachchan and Uday Chopra had good buddy chemistry. The thumbs up vote could also be attritubed to John Abraham's cool, villainous turn as he proved himself to be a worthy nemesis for the supposed supercop Jai Dixit (Bachchan). DHOOM's got big, stylish action sequences. The stunts weren't really anything that we haven't seen before in American action movies. But they were still neat to look at and were done up with polish, particularly the climactic 15 minutes or so, which was quite a display of excess in vehicular stunts and a somewhat blatant plagiarism of THE MATRIX f/x. I got a chuckle out of the sequences wherein Bachchan and Abraham would, every now and then, execute a gaudy, slo-mo martial arts move and then degenerate to engaging in a vicious but pretty basic slapfest.

Plot breakdown and spoilers follow: Straight-laced, laconic, and super-dedicated Assistant Commissioner of Police Jai Dixit (Bachchan) is called in to catch a gang riding souped-up motorbikes who've pulled off several daring robberies, one of which was done right in front of the befuddled police. Jai Dixit, thinking outside the box, hits upon the idea of setting a crook to catch a crook. He latches onto breezy but crooked Ali (Uday Chopra), who is a whiz on a motorbike. Ali, you see, fixes motorbike races and also sells stolen bikes. Dixit and Ali immediately don't like each other (maybe because Ali was hitting on Dixit's beautiful wife Sweety - yes, her name's Sweety!), but the two persevere and eventually get a scent of the audacious biker gang. A television interview by Dixit incenses the gang's calculating, steely-eyed (and often shirtless) leader, Kabir Bhai (John Abraham), who makes a personal challenge to Dixit. He taunts Dixit and unveils to him the location of the next crime. What then follows is a cat and mouse game between the two, as they try to one-up each other. Soon, the clearly defined roles of the hunter and the hunted begin to blur.

The song numbers are actually pretty hot. Lots of PG-13 skin is shown by the sexy ladies, as both Esha Deol & Rimi Sen find occasions to get wet, thanks to a garden hose and the weather. "Dilbara" and the Latin-flavored "Salaame" were the ones I thought the catchiest; in fact, all the songs (even the first song "Shikdum," which I didn't initially care for) were tuneful. Highlights in the Special Features section include an alternate ending (involving a day in the life of Inspector Ali), sexy Tata Young's "Dhoom Dhoom" video, and a "Making Of" featurette (23 minutes long and mostly in English).

Now, I'm not really a Bollywood connoisseur. DHOOM and the entertaining KHAKEE are the only two Bollywood action films I've seen. To be honest, I've viewed, almost exclusively, Bollywood movies with Aishwarya Rai in 'em. Aishwarya Rai is so beautiful she makes the two lovely girls in here look like spat-out prunes. Since I knew Aish is co-starring in DHOOM 2, I thought I'd check the original. I'm glad I did. At 123 minutes, DHOOM is shorter than the average Bollywood offering, but, to me, the shorter length just means that there are less opportunities for scenes rife with ridiculous coincidences thrown into the storyline. Which means, less moments where the viewer would burst out with an indignant outcry of "Oh, c'mon!!" As I've mentioned, the film is cheesy and goofy. But it does try so hard to be entertaining. So give it a chance before you start nitpicking it to bits. I rate DHOOM just a smidgen above three stars because I believe the positives outweigh the negatives. Enough people apparently agree.
