Tiwari (1911-1997) was an Indian Theologian and a leading participant in Hindu-Christian dialogue. He was a Scholar in Sanskrit, Hindi and Greek. The Bible Society of India made him revise the Hindi Bible (New Testament) into contemporary version. Yisu Das Tiwari was born Badri Prasad Tiwari into a Vaishnavite family in Agra in 1911 to Smt. Rajkunwar and Pandit Hari Govind Tiwari. As a growing youth, Tiwari was influenced by Swami Dayananda Saraswati, founder of the Arya Samaj and Swami Rama Tirtha. It was during his college days, that he came under the influence of Canon Holland, E. Stanley Jones, C. F. Andrews and others. After a reading of the Gospel according to Saint John, he took keen interest in the studies of the Bible and devotional writings of Christian mystics. Jesus Christ became his Ishta deva. However, his new found faith did not go well with his family members who sent him for internment to a mental asylum. Tiwari however became a Christian and chose to be baptised in January 1935 under the aegis of the Baptist Missionary Society. He later joined the History-Maker Gandhiji's Ashram in Wardha and began to follow Gandhiji's teachings. He swore to uphold Satya and began to wear khadi clothes. Simultaneously, Tiwari began growing in his new-found faith in Lord Jesus Christ and chose to become a Priest. He was ordained by the Baptist Missionary Society. 5-0 out of 5 stars Fast Service.
The DVD arrived quicker than promised. I had purchased it for a friend and told him that it would be here in about 5 to 7 days and it showed up 3 days latter. He and his wife loved the movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Moving and Very Good
This is a very moving movie starring Aishwarya Rai as a woman who is abused in her marriage. It is a dramatic movie, not the usual Bollywood type movie that contains dancing and music.Aishwayra Rai is magnificent in the lead role, and shows what a versatile actress she is.It is a great movie, and very well done.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars You must see this movie
Set in Britain in the late 1980s, a young bride from India with the hopes of a bright future, struggles with her duties as a traditional Indian wife while enduring daily abuse, neglect, torment and dishonor from her alcoholic husband. An empowering story of rebirth, as we see the heroine, rise from the 'ashes' of her burning home and to be liberated as a free woman from being a battered woman. The storyline is compelling, as we see flashbacks as the story unfolds. We are drawn in as her friendship evolves with her close friends in prison, while her pleas are being fought for in the courtroom.

This is a refreshing departure from the mellodramatic musical Bollywood movies that causes us to reflect on the lives of women, from all walks of life and cultures, who struggle daily from the torment of abusive spouses.

This is a must see movie.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS MOVIE.

4-0 out of 5 stars Woman is the slave of the slaves. Yes she is. Think about it.
This film seemed very promising at the outset. Although I generally am suspicious of productions based on true stories I was aware of this case from the BBC News and decided to give it a try.

The notion of a film based on true life experiences from within the Indian culture is still rather strange given the hostility of the Indian sub-continent communities to Western interpretations of their customs and traditions. However, it is a sign of the vibrancy of Asian cinema which is holding up those traditions to the light of modern and post-modern views of the world.

The beginning of the movie is very promising where we follow the perpetrator of the attack up the stairs and into the bedroom where oil is doused on the sleeping man. As circumstances unfold we are introduced into the world of the wife as a mere chattel of a husband who treats her as he pleases. For all of the pomp and festivities of the Asian wedding what we discover is a medieval division of labour in a household which degenerates into abuse and humiliation with in-laws turning a blind eye because it is the custom to do so.

The recent incidences of honour killings in the UK as well as the barbaric treatment of the woman who was subjected to multiple rape in Pakistan due to some offence committed by her brother suggests that these experiences still occur, but behind closed doors and silent communities throughout the world.

As the film develops with the wife being imprisoned in the alien world of a woman's prisonwhere she meets antagonism and racialism apparently based upon the ignorance of her way of life is in some ways enlightening. Whilst she becomes the focus of attention of a women's support group organised by more modern Asian women, she is befriended by her cell-mate who, unbeknowns to the rest of us, has a brother who is a high powered lawyer.

Ultimately right wins out and a slight crack appears in the cultural barbarity which many Asian women are confronting each and every day. What I found to be a great let down was the sort of happilly ever after type ending which oddly reflects a scene in the Tall Guy where everyone bands together in support including the prison bully. Very Disneyesque in a goody two shoes sort of way. This really was a major letdown for me in a drama which has significant cultura implications.

This film reminded me very much of movies which came from China in the early years once restrictions were eased. Whereas in those films, difficult social and political situations were addressed in a sensitive way which got the point across, Provoked seemed to miss the opportunity.

Well shot, well acted with a reasonable storyline, I would still recommend this movie. Good but not great but one that should be watched by as many men as possible. Some of the attitudes exposed herein can still be found, particularly among industrial workers, in many western countries. There are lessons there for us all. ... Read more

A novel of growing up, and a satire on race relations in England, which won the 1990 Whitbread Prize for Best First Novel. Karim Amir lives with his English mother and Indian father in the routine comfort of the South London suburbs, and dreams of escape to London proper.Amazon.com Review
There's quite a bit of activity in Buddha of Suburbia. Abureaucrat becomes a suburban guru who marries a follower with a son who's apunk rocker named Charlie Hero. Consequently, the guru's son is propelledfrom his bland life into a series of erotic experiences in London. All thewhile, Hanif Kureishi keeps the tone lively with wry wit. On the descriptionof suburban life: "We were proud of never learning anything except thenames of footballers, the personnel of rock groups and the lyrics to 'I Amthe Walrus.'" He also bends cultures, classes and genders while blastingthe racism of British life in this 1990 Whitbread Prize winner. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good.
The product was in good condition, hardly used at all in fact. The delivery was prompt. I would order from this person again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book!!
This is a great book. It tells the story about the bi-sexual Karim who is the son of an immigrant Indian man and British mother in the UK. That being said Hanif Kureishi is not a new Kafka, Proust, Joyce or Blixen. The genre of the book must be described as daring mainstream. But I dare say this is as good as mainstream can get. Like the clever dicks have said about Shakespeare: There is something for both the peasant and the king. The book describes life in the 70's and 80's London. Seen from the perspective of a guy with immigrant background but at the same time deeply involved with the current trends in art, theatre, music and litterature. There is some unforgettable moments where Hanif describes his meetings with drugs, sex and the new trends in culture. Especially the arival of punk with the Sex Pistols in the late 70's scene with love and peace/political left wing culture, Hanif describes staggering. It's great with this precise account of British culture, yet having this ethnic twist. The one drawback of the book is perhaps that it draws a too rosery image of the moslem immigants in Europe. There is no mention of moslem violence and crime in the book, the moslems are described as victims of white British racism, skinheads and neo-fasiscm. Also the rising islamism, which I guess was already going on in the 70's and 80's is not mentioned at all. In the book an islamic man is forcing his daughter to marry an unkown Indian man who arrives straight from Bombay, this is treated in a very light hearted fashion, like all is well. Honour killings of women in many Europe countries commited by islamic men has later shown that all is not well. Also the percentage of violent crime commited by people with moslem background in Europe today is far higher, in proportion, than violent crime commited by people of native European origin. So the discription of the immigrant with moslem background in the book seems somewhat biased. Well properly the situation was different in the 60's, 70's when the writer grew up. Otherwise it's a really great book. I dare say a modern classic. I was impressed.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best coming-of-age stories I've ever read, it wonderfully evokes London of the mid-'70s
Read and loved it in the early '90s.Re-read it when I found out Kureishi's coming to my area on a book tour. One of the best coming-of-age stories I've ever read, it wonderfully evokes London of the mid-'70s through the use of one of my favorite things - pop culture. The rare book which cries out for a sequel.

5-0 out of 5 stars riveting
There is a timelessness to this novel. It is contemporary but it is a classic.I was captivated! It is beautifully written, the characters are almost touchable. One can connect on a human level to the story, the characters and their lives.Aside from being well written the plot is fantastic; exciting and sexy, like Henry Miller and Salinger but with a contemporary East meets West vibe. You won't be able to put it down and you'll be ok with that.

4-0 out of 5 stars Father & son
This story is seen through the eyes of an adolescent from a middle class Indian-English family in the late hippies/early punk years in a suburb in London. Many characters play but, may be as pointed out by the title, the deeper story is the one of his father. The father to son difficult relationship is usually present in most Kureishi's works but in no case with such an intensity. The collapse of a family, its impact in the lives of many people including the character are ,in my view, the essential part of this novel. Karim's father character with its deep contradictions, his ups and downs is absolutely the best of the book. Their relationship is described throughout the novel among funny anecdotes of the life in a London suburb. ... Read more
