Product Description
From her critically acclaimed 1992 debut, Little Earthquakes, to the recent hit, Scarlet’s Walk, Tori Amos has been a formidable force in contemporary music, with one of the most dedicated fan bases in the industry. In Tori Amos: Piece by Piece, the singer herself takes readers beyond the mere facts, explaining the specifics of her creative process—how her songs go from ideas and melodies to recordings and passionately performed concert pieces.

Written with acclaimed music journalist Ann Powers, Tori Amos: Piece by Piece is a firsthand account of the most intricate and intimate details of Amos’s life as both a private individual and a very public performing musician. In passionate and informative prose, Amos explains how her songs come to her and how she records and then performs them for audiences everywhere, all the while connecting with listeners across the world and maintaining her own family life (which includes raising a young daughter). But it is also much more, a verbal collage made by two strong female voices – and the voices of those closest to Amos—that calls upon genealogy, myth, and folklore to express Amos’s unique and fascinating personal history. In short, we see the pieces that make up – as Amos herself puts it—“the woman we call Tori.”

With photos taken especially for this book by the photographer Loren Haynes, Tori Amos: Piece by Piece is a rare treat for both Tori listeners and newcomers alike, a look into the heart and mind of an extraordinary musician. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars My book fell apart too
Is there a reason why the don't make spiral bound songbooks?I know it doesnt look as nice. But, it seems it would function better that way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Tori Amos is a gifted writer and a rain drop from a cloud of mystery
Sometimes I question whether or not Tori Amos is a genius or not, however when i first listened to this album I was blown away by her sense of pure honesty and profound goodness, her words speak to the soul and hang from the heart and her memorable gentle touch is brilliant. She is a wonderful pianist and her lyrics are vivid, intense and often overwhelming although her music never fails to amaze me. I believe my favorite songs on this Cd are Crucify, Girl, Precious things, and Little Earthquakes. Her ability to use her words to blend the truth together has inspired me.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my most prized possessions...
This collection of sheet music, is an absolute godsend. My favorite songs are China and Crucify. When playing, I feel like I am "channeling" Tori. Quite a rush. Anyways, though, the book doesn't stay open unless you rip the pages out. Aside from that, though, it's a great collection of songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great, fun times!
If you like Tori and like to play piano, this book is for you! Some of the songs are pretty hard, but if you really get into them, they will start to dominate your world. Most of the songs are true to the cd versions, with some changes because most of us can't play like Tori. However, you can hear the song you know and love when you play it.Playing the songs helped me understand them on a deeper level.Definitely fun!

3-0 out of 5 stars Beginners only
I sympathise with the reviewer who reported the faulty binding. Mine fell apart too... I am a trained pianist and like others, I was disappointed somewhat that the arrangements are never 100% faithful to Tori's versions,a trend obvious in all the Tori albums. This is especially puzzling whenoften the excised parts are NOT that technically diffcult. But for peoplewith the skill and a good ear, it is possible to improvise your owncorrections to make the pieces more faithful - change octaves, maintainaccompaniment themes like 'Precious Thing's' famous opening past the intro,as this music *doesn't* do. And what is this thing that publishers *love*to do where they write the melody line into the accompaniment?! It doesn't*exist* in the accompaniment, you *sing* it. This barbaric heresy onperformance practice is a sad fact of music publishing, it seems. Butoverall, it provides good song foundation....but experienced players mustbe prepared to work around some parts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional book
It you are interested in finding out how people surmount all odds to become successful, then read this book.Tori Amos is interesting, deep, thoughtful and an enigma.Lots of photos, too.Worth the read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Alternate Book Cover
I have this book except Tori is wearing something with spaghetti staps on the cover.I like the book cover that I own better than this one shown on Amazon. This book would be better if the Discography section had photos of album and single covers.I don't really consider myself a Tori fan anymore.Especially since I've never seen her live. And "Strange Little Girls" really annoyed me.The last album I bought was "Scarlet's Walk."It was the Limited Edition that came with all the inexplicable junk (the "polaroids" and lizard pendant).I'm thinking about getting "...For Easy Piano" book though.I have the "Little Earthquakes book and...let's just say I can play the beeline at beginning of "Silent All These Years" and that's it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures but little information on Tori, the person.
I gave this book four stars though I was thoroughly disappointed. It had great color pictures, a tour itinerary, a discography (Up to _Boys for Pele_, the book was published right after that album), and, of course, wonderful "Tori-isms."However, it was painfully obvious that this was an authorized biography. Not that I want 500 pages of pure dirt on Tori, but this was more sanitized than most of her interviews. The hyperbole that Rogers (the author) sprinkles throughout makes you feel she is more a fan than an author. Not that is a bad thing in itself, but it makes you doubt the validity of many recounted episodes (was the show breath-taking or was Rogers' breath taken away?)Also, many facts that Tori fans know off-hand are glossed over.Eric Rosse is referred to as her producer throughout and only once, when Rogers briefly covered the development of _Pele_, did she mention that they "separated."If you aren't a Tori fan, you might think Rogers meant professionally, not personally. This sort of omission made me wonder what else was left out.

So: If you want good pictures and and overview of the nuts and bolts of Tori's rise, then this is great book. But if you want to know more about Tori as a person and her life, then this book doesn't contain anything you don't already know.A must for fans, a good start for new fans, but pass if you want something comprehensive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-written, informative, and a Tori photo treasure-trove
I didn't have very high expectations when I bought this book.Tori Amos is notoriously coy, cryptic, and evasive with interviewers, so I expected a pretty but unenlightening volume riddled with errors (in the tradition of the Tori Amos interview CDs).I was pleasantly surprised. The biography is well-balanced and gives Tori's formative childhood years as much weight as each era of her career. To my surprise, I learned a couple of things I didn't know about Tori. The photographs are beautiful, and what a treat it was to see so many showing young "Myra Ellen" and her family!

The one drawback I can see is that this book was published in 1996, and thus is missing Tori's three most recent albums, as well as her marriage and the birth of her daughter.Perhaps we can hope for an updated edition in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Tori Fans
A well written and in-depth look at Tori Amos. The pictures are wonderful and quite beautiful, and it's nice to see so many of her earlier days. The book gives a lot of insight into her life and songs, and is something all die hard Tori fan should own. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Does the lyrics justice....
What drew me in as a Tori Amos fan in 1993 with "Little Earthquakes" was the hautingly beautiful, hauntingly real lyrics.Thats what kept me running off to get her CD's at midnight on relase days and taking breaks at just the right time at work so I could get the best seats to concerts at [...].This book was precisely what I wanted, which simply was a place to gather all her lyrics in one convenient spot. The gorgeous, breathtaking illustrations are a crazy, wonderful extra. The best thing about this book is that its a pretty exhaustive catalogue of Amos's work up thru "To Venus & Back".Unfortunately that is also its biggest downfall. There have been three albums since that time, "Scarlet's Walk", "The Beekeeper" and 2007's "American Doll Posse" and I truly lament the fact those songs aren't found here.I call for an updated version, ASAP with twice as many illistrations!!Even at that, this book is worth the going price here for a used copy. This is, after the songs themselves, the best thing in my Tori collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable for a Tori fan, but slightly incomplete
I want to give this book 4 1/2 stars, really, for being SO DARN PRETTY.Leonard is a great artist (just check out his website, herbleonard.com, for more Tori Amos art, Kate Bush art, Peter Gabriel art, and loads more) and captures perfectly the spirit of Tori's music. Each and every work in here is full of tiny details and brings visual clarity to Tori's beautiful chaos. There were only a couple of works here that I disliked...namely, the illustrations for "Cornflake Girl" and "God"--in the "God" painting, it is very obvious that the artist took some not-so-great photos of Tori (from what looks like the MAXIMUM INTERVIEWS photo shoot) and translated them into paintings. In the "Cornflake Girl" painting, the overally effect would have been a little less silly looking if he hadn't taken the work so very, very literally.

I thought that it was fantastic that so many of Tori's works were there (everything from Little Earthquakes to Venus Orbiting, including something like 95% of her B-sides, plus a few unreleased Ellen Amos songs and a few from Y KANT TORI READ--which is, incidentally, not a bad CD at all, and really should be more widely available.Oh, well.Go to hereinmyhead.com to hear some of those songs).I do have a few gripes about the edition--this book is chock-full of typos and misprinted lyrics.I have a first print copy of this book, so possibly these errors have been corrected in subsequent runs.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for The Tori Amos Fan!
This is possibly the most exciting thing I own from Tori Amos aside from her actual music. There are over 100 different songs displayed for your reading and pondering pleasure. But not only is having most of Tori's lyrics at my fingertips incredibly divine, but Herb Leonhard's illustrations are absolutely extraordinary and take my breath away.He has truly captured Tori's dreamscapes with his art. This is a brilliant marriage of image and idea.Well worth the money!xo

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
This book is absolutely beautiful. Not only does it have lyrics to over 100 of Tori's songs, from "Crucify" to "Bells for Her" to "Talula" to "Spark" to "Bliss", it has every song off of all her albums from "Little Earthquakes" to "To venus and back", plus several of her B sides and songs she wrote when she wasn't Tori (i.e. "Just Ellen.") The paintings are absolutely gorgeous, and go well the with songs they accompany (see "Bliss" and "Waitress.") This is a must have for all Tori fans.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good but...
... this would be better if there was sheet music to accompany it.I don't just want to read her lyrics; I want to play her music.I think this is a book for Tori Amos fans only. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Scarlet's Walk in the Park?
I am a Toriphile, and have five or six of her music books. I have found that all of them, for ease of publishing and other things, are dumbed down a bit, which is irritating, but for the savvy pianist or computer downloader, you can figure it out. Scarlets walk is not unpleasant. Heavier piano tunes like "Wednesday," "Virginia," and "Gold Dust," are great, but also some of my favorite songs on the piano are not really piano-oriented, like "a sorta fairytale," which is mostly three chords throughout the piece. So be familiar with the album and which pieces you really like before you buy. Great for someone who knows all the words to the album, but for a strict piano composition, try "Under the Pink," or "Little Earthquakes."

4-0 out of 5 stars Overall a great book with a few disappointments
I loved Tori's album "Scarlet's Walk" and could not wait to get the book.Personally, I like to be able to play the songs as much like they sound on the album as possible, so I was happy with this book overall.I know she never arranges every song on the album for accompaniment.A few always have the melody built in to it. The songs that are arranged to sound like the album version are Amber Waves, A Sorta Fairytale, Wednesday, Strange, Carbon, Sweet Sangria, Your Cloud, Pancake, New York, Mrs. Jesus, Scarlet's Walk, Virginia and Gold Dust.
Then Crazy, Vegas, Taxi Ride, and Paradise all have the built in melody and obviously Wampum Prayer is just the vocal line. All in all the arrangements are very good but I was slightly disappointed with how simple Fairytale was, even though it's arranged to sound pretty much just like the album.I was still very happy with the book and definetly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
"Scarlet's Walk" is my favorite Tori Amos album to date, so when I stumbled across this book, I had to order it. The cover is nice (same as the album), and there's some nice photos/lyrics in the inside pages.

As for the transcriptions themselves, they're very very good. Let's be real, it's impossible to be 100% accurate, especially with an intricate player like Tori. But all the chords seem accurate, as do the vocal parts.

I've been playing since late 2003, so my sight reading is a bit shakey. However, I know my chords very well, so I can pick up any of these right away (just playing the chords at least). So don't worry if you're not ultra-experienced, because you can still get plenty out of here.

Songs like "Strange", "Crazy", and "Another Girl's Paradise" incorporate the vocal melody in the arrangement itself, and they're not extremely difficult to begin with (helped in part because they were written in three relatively easy key signatures).

Other songs like "Your Cloud" and "A Sorta Fairytale" do not, but it isn't extraordinary difficult to do so either if you know all your chords *and* can play inverted versions of those chords as well.

"Carbon" is probably the trickiest, with it's alternating 6/8 and 7/8 time signature, and many intricies. "I Can't See New York" is obviously lengthy. "Gold Dust" is pretty tough too; I haven't even tackled that one too much!

I also own "Boys For Pele", which is also quality, but this is the better of the two. "Scarlet's Walk" is, IMO, Tori's prettiest sounding album (lots of rich major 7ths and 9ths), so this is a great book to spruce up your repetoir a bit.

Hopefully, they're working on a "Beekeeper" song book as we speak!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE best transcribed Tori book yet
If you're into playing songbooks for their piano value (that is, if you're a genuine pianist who loves Tori's music) this book is for you. Unlike all the previous versions, Tori actually made this one as closely resembling the actual album music as possible. It's more challenging than the others, but at the same time not intimidatingly so.
So if you're looking for a good Tori piano music book, this is the one to choose.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tori -- Laid Back
I could listen to this album whenever I need to relax. It's one of those albums that you can listen to the entire thing & not skip through any songs. It doesn't have the "sing-ability" of some of her others (Under The Pink, etc...), but Tori is forever experimenting with new mediums & integrating them into her amazing fluid style. I keep this in my car & just enjoy the drive as this angel's voice lilts about me... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesomeness
I absolutely love this comic collection. It is stunning, creative, interesting, beautiful, etc. I got it at a great price--I checked everywhere else online first before settling on the one at Amazon, because it was the cheapest. I read this while getting my own tattoo actually, and it almost took my mind off of the pain!

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't know much about Tori, but if you like her you will love this book
The first thing you should know is this book is freaking HUGE.When I got it in the mail it was in a big box and it was heavy.I was surprised because I didn't think it would be so big, but I guess I should have expected that, this being an art book and all.The second thing you should know is you're probably not going to be able to find it in your library or book store; Amazon is the only place I have seen it.I bought it for a friend who is obsessed with everything Tori Amos, and it incorporates lyrics from different songs into illustrations/stories that follow along, sort of like a music video.I don't know much about Tori, but I can tell you that visually, the art is very cool. And my friend loved it.Hope this info helps.

3-0 out of 5 stars Tori Book
Okay, so unfortunetly I have a negative comment. The book itself is fantasic and the deluxe edition is so greatly done.I purchased this for my partner as a birthday gift and when it arrived it was all bent and smashed on the sides.I thought it was meant to be new? Very dissapointed. How is it meant to be a collectors item now? I hope It never happens again, because I enjoy shopping on Amazon, and really wish to continue for the rest of my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
Beautiful and interesting. Non Tori fans will also love this highly visual book of art

5-0 out of 5 stars Compelling storytelling independent of whether you're a fan of Amos's music
Tori Amos's eclectic, swirling, piano-laden music could always be considered poetry set to thumping, driving tunes. Her lyrics can be dense, dangerous and hard to follow, but they can also resonate with the clarity of a writer with amazing insight into the human psyche. That she dances around in the realm of faeries and sprites and spirits, and gives everything she touches an ethereal quality, puts some off and embraces others. Regardless of which camp you fall into, there may have been something you've not noticed about her lyrics all this time: the stories.

A wealth of stories exist within Amos's writing. Some have seemed obvious within the lyrics, but more of them have been inspired by the intense imagery she paints. Such inspiration is what has brought about the massive Comic Book Tattoo, a collection of nearly 500 pages from some of the best comic writers and artists working today. (A quick sampling of those creators: Colleen Doran, Pia Guerra, James Stokoe, John Ney Rieber, Mike Dringenberg, Ryan Kelly, and Ted McKeever--there are many more, and not a less-than-excellent one in the bunch.)

Comic Book Tattoo takes more than 50 of Amos's songs and turns them over to those creators to flesh out. They use their talents to explore some of the hidden meanings in the song or just to take some of the lyrics and use it as a springboard for another idea (one of my favorites in this vein is based on Amos's song "Bouncing Off Clouds" and features a woman who makes rapid deliveries by jumping from planes and--with the help of special shoes--bounces back up to her destination).

Other stories take bold risks and make for compelling storytelling independent of whether you're a fan of Amos's music. The story based on "Scarlet's Walk" (written by G. Willow Wilson and illustrated by Steve Sampson) is simply exquisite. Sampson uses a breathtaking technique that places almost manga-like drawings against real photographic backgrounds. The effect is gorgeous. That it resides here, tucked somewhere in the middle of the book, without fanfare, should give you some idea of the hidden treasures to be found here.

Amos mentions in her afterword that she was most concerned, when embarking on this project, with making sure the creators felt no need to censor themselves, that they should flesh out their stories any way they see fit. It would seem they took that to heart. The stories inside Comic Book Tattoo can range from sweet to probing to outright violent, but they remain fascinating in their own right, and not just as interpretations of lyrics.

It's difficult to pick out a favorite among the gems contained here, but one that stands out with strikingly lush painted images and sparse, poetically inspired narration is Mike Dringenberg's "Honey." Soft, muted colors and gothic typography help set a dreamlike stage for an exploration of bees, memory and time.

Product Description
How did the shy and conflicted daughter of a minister become one of today's most important artists? Tori Amos is a unique voice in rock. She is an artist, a poet, an emotional chanteuse, a wordsmith, a pianist, and most of all, an entertainer who has opened herself up to her audience in a way most musicians would never dare. Tori Amos was a musical prodigy, so talented that she was the youngest child ever to be admitted to one of the world's most prestigious musical academies - and so rebellious that she was eventually thrown out. She is a feminist who questions the core values of feminism. She was a little girl who played piano in gay bars. She is a pioneering businesswoman. She is a rape victim who has transcended tragedy, and has drawn inspiration from the darkest incidents of her life. Tori Amos is a complex artist in a complex world. "I'm an acquired taste," she once told Rolling Stone magazine, but her fans are obsessive in their love. Jay S. Jacobs has written a detailed and passionate portrait of this controversial, kooky, and multifaceted singer. Pretty Good Years is an honest and comprehensive look at this bracingly original performer. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Pretty Good (But Nowhere Near Great) Biography
When I saw this biography, I thought it would be interesting, and I was right. This is ten years more recent than her authorized biography.I have my doubts that this one is authorized, but it was written by a person who gave an honest portrayal of Ms. Amos, being respectful at the same time.

One reviewer commented the biography was too subjective and spent too much time giving a song by song rundown of each of her projects. For most biographies, this would be valid. However, when one is dealing with a subjective field like music, and especially when one is dealing with an artist who is expressive both musically and lyrically, a more subjective biography is more acceptable.Tori's music and lyrics are so deep, it justifies a song by song analysis more so than other pop artists (including those like Madonna or even the Beatles). My only complaint is when biographer Jay S. Jacobs makes comments on people who voted for Bush (which I did twice, and gratefully), which wasn't really necessary.

Being a Christian, I would be more interested in reading about the comments of her parents on Tori's current direction (since she's a minister's child).I also am curious if Tori would have gone a different direction if she was introduced to CCM as a teenager, instead of leaning toward rock.

This biography did give me insight into Tori's personality, and doing so, it succeeded.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Year
Every Tori Amos fan needs to own this book, every thing you ever would want to know about her life and her struggle to become a very large success is here.

5-0 out of 5 stars A detailed look at her times and her trend-setting ways.
PRETTY GOOD YEARS: A BIOGRAPHY OF TORI AMOS provides a satisfying biography of a rock n roll gal who has a wide audience of fans and relatively few other biographical coverages to her name. From her achievement as the youngest child ever to be admitted to a world-renowned music school to her feminist roots, ability to question even counter-culture norms, and her varied musical compositions and directions, PRETTY GOOD YEARS is more than just a survey of Amos' life: it's a detailed look at her times and her trend-setting ways.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unimpressive
I was excited to finally have a full length biography of Tori, but upon reading this book, I found myself disappointed. The content was fairly detailed, but early in the book, I began to be annoyed by some minor factual errors. As the book went on I found the unnecessarily subjective opinions of the author becoming more common, and was bored to tears as he went through a song by song description of every single album, saying what he viewed the songs were about (usually with some basis in fact) and his opinion. I never thought I could be bored by this subject matter. As a very avid tori fan, I knew I had to own it anyway, but if you are anything but the most obessive collector, just pick up Tori Amos: Peice by Piece and wait for a more specific biography to come out that will be more interesting.

Tori Amos is my favorite musician/songwriter, and if this applies to you as well, you already own this book. You can't resist it.If you are casually interested, or a new fan, I would recommend "Tori Amos:All These Years" by Kalen Rogers instead, as it is her authorized biography, and it is wonderfully done. This book is an interesting read for the Tori fan.Although most of the information in it I already knew, there are some interesting tidbits here and there, and lots of wonderful Tori quotes.I particularly enjoy how it is arranged in chronological order by album release date, and I also enjoy the author's stab at a theoretical analysis of the songs. However, I have one complaint about the book, which is my pet peeve:why did no one apparently proof read this book? There are typos and grammatical errors throughout.Sentence structures have gone awry.It is very distracting to me and to others as well, I imagine. It also gives the book the feel that it was thrown together at the last minute, although that obviously is not the case, as a tremendous amount of research was done to write this book. Please, proofread! It would have been a simple thing to do that would make the book a lot less distracting and a lot more enjoyable. On the whole, I give this 3 stars and it is essential (and irresistable) for any true Tori fan. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great buy great book
I have this book, not only are there plenty of songs in the book, but they are a bit more difficult. You are not getting the way too easy boring version. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thus far the best published sheet music collection
I have several books of Tori Amos music, but I bought this for some of the harder to find pieces. Overall, this is my favorite book and the one I play out of the most. I have played piano for a few years but am not very skilled - however I can work my way through most of the music. Some of the songs require more work (Caught a Lite Sneeze, Space Dog) and some like Mother, Putting the Damage On and Winter are pretty easy.I play several instruments and have been able to adapt the music easily to guitar and flute. The only thing I haven't really liked is that since Tori Amos supposedly never writes down music, this doesn't translate to printed versions of audio recording. However, I have seen her live many times and every time each song changes, so a written version of any song is given to improvisation.

4-0 out of 5 stars To Start...
I have been teaching myself piano for about 8 or 9 months, so am relatively inexperienced; thus, i expected i wouldn't be able to play anything in this book, and had ordered it for future use.I was wrong, however, and am actually able to play bits and pieces of several songs.'Winter' is pretty simple, though, for me, the accompaniment took a bit getting used to.'Professional Widow' is also fairly easy.Point being, even beginners can use this book. The transcriptions, as said, have been dumbed-down for many songs, but a talented enough pianist can improvise, anyhow.I recommend this book to get started on, it's really wonderful!

3-0 out of 5 stars fun to play but something's missing...
I love to play piano and I was thrilled to get Tori's book of sheet music. However I was disappointed to see that a lot of the piano music had been modified from her original work. Many arrangements of popular music tend to incorporate the vocals and other instruments into the piano piece (in order to hear the melody or another aspect of the song) and this is the case with these arrangements too.Although sometimes I agree that doing this may make the piece sound better when played alone (without vocals or other instruments) I wish they would have note-for-note what is actually in the original version of Tori's songs.

4-0 out of 5 stars The 1 to buy
If you're going to buy just one of the Tori Amos sheet books, this is definently the one you are looking for. All Tori singles from "Little Earthquakes" to "From the choirgirl Hotel".
I'm not a good piano player, so actually I'm not able to play any of the songs -yet. The closest I can get is "china".
One of my friends, however is a great Piano player so I can tell that some of the songs are simplified, for example Cornflake Girl; but that is very understandable...no one can play the piano like Tori. The interpretions however are very good and I would definently recommend it; both if you are a great piano player or just interested in music.

4-0 out of 5 stars not bad
These pieces of sheet music are not bad, especially for those that have been made in easy format. Mostly singles here, with a few beloved album tracks and b-sides. my only complaint is that Cooling does not have the Brambles bridge, but all in all, it is a great book for beginners itchy to play some Tori. Even if you have a hard time with sheet music, you'll be able to play from this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Recognizable Tori songs
The only complaint I have with this compilation is that there aren't very many of her early songs in here. I wanted more songs from Little Earthquakes and less songs from her later works that I've never enjoyed as much.

In any case, this is a great little book and is quite a challenge to beginning piano students but still stays relatively faithful to the original music, a hard thing to do when arranging music in an "easy" way. Money well spent on this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tori Amos for Easy Piano
I love tori amos, but this book makes her songs sound.. just not quite right. They make it easy piano, the layout is nice with chord symbols and full lyrics.. but compared to the actual song, i feel like they leave out some very important tones which bring the song together and make it a TORI song. But its great if you want to figure out the skeletons of her songs and then add in more as you go a long.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I am learning to play piano and this book is helpful. I am playing the favorites that I have truly enjoyed over the years. I recommend this book for Tori fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Start for playing Tori Music

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Challenging!
I have been playing the piano for almost a decade and I find "Under the Pink" a challenging book. However, I am new to the music of Tori Amos and I have noticed tricky key signatures followed by many accidentals in her other book transcriptions.Rhythms are often complex but should be dampered if you are familiar with the original recording by Tori."Pretty Good Year" is the only piece I can play in its entirety. This song alone is worth the price of the book.Other reviews of this book are correct. Some songs follow the vocal line in the right hand whereas some use the piano harmonies.Notable segments are removed from "Cornflake Girl" and "Icicle" but you do receive two piano instrumental bee-sides, which is a treat.

Personally, "Under the Pink" is my favorite studio album from Tori Amos. The piano is presented in a more dignified and classical manner than her other albums, which makes these transcriptions open to potential disappointment from fans who excel in piano and expect exact transcriptions.

I recommend this book for any pianist. To a beginner, you can simplify the transcriptions easily.Intermediate players should be able to play the music as written.Advanced players can probably ad lib to what is presented.

4-0 out of 5 stars Under Stands (slightly) Above (most of) the Rest
Given the nature of Tori Amos's music (and slightly obsessive fans) one would think that Amsco would be interested in releasing the most accurate possible piano score to each of her recordings ... complete with vocal notation and extensive editor's notes! However, this is not always the case. Her sheet music books often provide over-simplified piano parts reduced to melody and the bass-line. Harmony vocals are nearly unheard of, and comments from the editor are virtually non-existant.

The biggest problem with many of her books is their follow-the-vocal approach to right hand notation, which typically ignores Tori's expressive playing in favor of a cut-n-paste job from the melody line along with sparse chords on the down-beats. This issue is somewhat avoided in Pink, on which Tori follows her own vocals much of the time already.

Some sections are slightly "dumbed down" from Tori's playing ("Yes, Anastasia" specifically), but the changes blend better and are much subtler here than in other books. Even the repetitive left hand parts of "Pretty Good Year" and "Icicle" are preserved nearly verbatim from the record. Bonus piano compositions "All The Girls Hate Her" and "Over It" are stunningly well-done.

However, off-setting the faithful transcriptions in this book are a few key transgressions.Foremost is the neutering of "Cornflake Girl," presented here without any of its awe-inspiring solos and with too much right-hand-play-a-long.Luckily, a brief internet search will lead you to several quality transcriptions of this gem. Equally as offensive is the trimming of the classical-style openings of both "Icicle" and "Yes, Anastasia," but the rest of each song is faithful.

Pink is a challenging album to play, and includes a few remarkable passages ("Cloud On My Tongue"), key signatures (Cb on most of "Icicle"), and ever-shifting time-signatures ("God" ... yikes).Vocals are noted with precision -- this album is largely lacking in backing vocals. The exception is "Space Dog," which *does* include backgrounds in its bridge/outro.

For the guitarists among you (of which I am one), Under The Pink offers sensible chord translations, and it includs the use of capos where chords would otherwise be painful to play. The book only ever suggests capoing up to the first fret, but you may find better options for some tunes on your own (try 6th for "Pretty Good Year").

Aside from "Cornflake Girl" every song in this book is presented in a playable *and* mostly accurate fashion. Not for the beginning pianist, but unless it comes back into print it will soon be hard to find!

4-0 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings on partial transcription
Generally speaking, this book will be good for most fans of Tori who happen to also be reasonably competent on the piano. That said, these are not exactly what she plays (a bit easier, right hand tends to follow themelody), though they are in the correct key signatures.Advanced pianistswho read music and have poor ears will likely be frustrated by the bookbecause of the transcriptions, while advanced pianists with good earslikely can play a more accurate version of the songs than thetranscriptions in the first place (this was my situation). Also, if you'rea beginning pianist (<2 years), the difficult key sigs will likely behard for you.Still, I'm sure the book fits a nice broad swath ofToriphiles who worship the ground she walks on, so I give it 4 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better have been
I got this book for a preasent amd tryed to play all the songs. I havent played for a long time and can figur out most music but some things ae just strange. Cornflake Girl's rythm was way of in beging it was straight 8thsfrom the what i thinkquart 16th 16th doted quarter. It also includes allthe girls hate her and over it which are easy and fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book for those of you who want to play the basic notes
This is a great and fun book for those of you who desire to play the basic notes; however, since Tori is so talented, it is somewhat toned down (at no fault of the editors). Its a fun book - I love the beginning with thepictures of Tori and the ones she drew, as well as the discography of eventhe hard to find singles.Aspiring serious Tori collectors will find thisuseful.Songs like Cornflake Girl and Yes, Anastasia are toned down a lot,but thats b/c she is just too good to transcribe efectively.Pretty GoodYear is fun to play - it's pretty easy.Great book for those who want toplay the basic notes, and a lot of fun :) ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!!
If you like to play songs as close to possible as they're played on the album, then you will love this book.Almost every song is arranged for piano accompaniment with the exception of a few and they are very close to the album versions. It's a great book and I'd recommend it to any Tori fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pele Songbook
Great Transcription.Probably the best of all the Tori sheet music books for accuracy. It's been discontinued because there is a picture of Tori suckling a piglet in a rocking chair, so if you get your hands on it it's a collector's item now.Treat it well!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for Piano Pros! Intermediates and Amateurs read on
Hmmmmm, tricksy this one. Tori Amos makes me sick. I took piano lessons for like three years and quit because I hated it. But, when you're ten years old and your fat, evil piano teacher slams your finger onto a key yelling "C!C!C!C!C!" when you accidentally played a D, it kind of has a way of ruining the magic of the moment. (She also made luscious smelling cookies all the time, and we had to sit there in our after school hunger and watch as she consumed them one by one) Anyway, Tori "I was playing better piano than you when I was two" Amos was the reason I decided to forget the tyrant Mrs. Evers and take up piano again. I struggle with some things in this book, but I retained enough piano knowledge to get through the majority of her songs. Horses is fun to play, so is the Doughnut Song. Marianne is pretty close to the CD (for all simplified purposes), nothing you can't listen to the song and add to. I have been disappointed with Not the Red Baron, though, because it just doesn't sound right. This book is also generally kind of hard. That could be because I'm not a great piano player and just can't get the flow rght. I would actually suggest getting the Anthology, as it is more simplified and has more variety. The simplification of the transcription in such books can be good and bad, but nothing you can't add to. I think it is better to have it easier to begin with, instead of so complex that it is intimidating. Come on, Tori's music is intimidating enough! For that reason I would suggest the Anthology over this book, at least to start with. Besides, there is so much more to play in it. If you get stuck or discouraged, there are many other songs to play that will boost your confidence, as opposed to this book which is all music from one CD, and one of the stranger Tori CDs at that. I give this book 3.5 stars, and suggest the Anthology. However, if you're just really into Pele and want to play some of the songs, go for it. If all you can do is read and play notes, you can do it. Be confident. Practice one song (Horses!) until you're lost in playing it. Then move on to another (Father Lucifer!). If you can't figure out how it is supposed to sound, put the cd on and listen to that part. Improv if you must! Just don't quit! Before long you'll be throwing your own private piano concert, lost for hours in ethereal Toryland. It's nice to visit her world for a while.

5-0 out of 5 stars only the best, plays the best
Tori Amos is a magnificent piano goddess. I try to play like her all of the time, but I feel like Iam her when I play my piano.
Since I never had the chance to see her in concert I always g online to watch her there. She is amazing. Several years ago at one of my 8th grade talent shows my friend performed "Hey Jupiter" by her. Oh my god she sound just like her. She had excellent props for her performance.
Thats why Iam such a big fan of her music, all for knowing, she plays piano and sings acapella.

4-0 out of 5 stars ADP Sheet Music Book
The transcribing in this book is on the good side.None of the sheet music songbooks are note for note Tori, but all the songs stay in the keys they were written in.Nothing was transposed for easier play, so they all sound right. My biggest disappointment was that "My Posse Can Do", "Miracle", and "Drive all Night" are not included. The book does not like to stay open either. The included artwork is pretty but falls out easy, so be careful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Tori songbooks for accuracy
There are just a few little things that aren't right, but compared to the mistakes and inaccuracies of the previous Tori songbooks, this one is really fabulous. I've attempted to play most songs and I am really pleased! I'm like a young clown on the piano compared to Tori, so I try to stick to simpler pieces - if that's you too, then start with Big Wheel, Mr. Bad Man, and Smokey Joe. I don't think the intro to Beauty of Speed is accurate - it seems like Tori keeps both hands rapidly moving high on the keyboard in treble clef as opposed to simple bass notes, but does it matter - like I'll f'ing be able to play it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Transcription

5-0 out of 5 stars Bee Sides Songbook
Excellent transcriptions!Be warned that the version of "Sugar" is not the live version. You'll be sorely disappointed if that's what you wanted. The artwork is so cute and hand picked by Tori and her dad!

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite of all Tori's songbooks
This book was printed after Under The Pink was released, so her later b-sides are not represented here, but this songbook is still a gem. Also Paulina Stuckey's artwork is superb!Tori and her dad chose from among her drawings, and they fit so well with the songs they are paired with.Anyway that's all I'll say since other reviews deal with the music itself and I'd just be repeating..

5-0 out of 5 stars i like
lets see...where do i begin?since i am not a die hard fan of tori amos yet, although i love her very much as a person and a musician, some of the songs were not noticable yet to me.i will learn the song and when i do, iknow i'll learn to love 'em.i just got the book today so it'll takewhile...you know?anyway, my favourites must be kinda "home on therange" (i like it because it's noticable) and i love "blackswan"."here in my head" also is nice, but since i'm notthe greatest at the piano, and it has 6 flats, i just play the music withthe f's #.it's kinda hard at first, but after...man, it's a beautifulsong.oh yeah, and if you decide to do it my way, make sure that whenthere's a natural sign, play the note sharp.you do the math...BOTTOMLINE: GREAT BOOK!

5-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Tori Reference
This was a great reference up until BFP. This book does not have items after 1997. I contacted the author about possibly doing a volume II and he was not planning on it. However this book is great for early Tori items.

5-0 out of 5 stars essential book for the tori collector
to say that this is an essential volume of work for the serious tori collector is almost a contradiction in terms. the serious collector could basically be any tori fan around the world who is slavishly devoted to tori's music & simply must own the rarities no matter how expensive or obscure they may be. naturally, this book would probably not appeal to the casual tori fan who buys an album occasionally at the local wal-mart. if you mainly interested in some basic information on tori & her formative years, you should try the kalen rogers book instead which is an awesome introduction to ms. amos & contains many lovely photographs of the goddess herself. on the other hand, this is a useful reference book if you are seriously into collecting promos, extremely rare vinyl, or the infamous y kant tori read cd. speaking from personal experience, i've found very few of the items listed in this book but i keep it on hand just in case i should run across them at record shows, used cd bins, or perhaps yard sales of tori fans. sad to say, most of these items are either long out of circulation or very few copies were distributed. one interesting fact is that most of the material you will find on ebay are not the original pressings but rather cheap bootlegs(while these sometimes can be very necessary) which are overly priced. I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO SHARE ANOTHER PIECE OF VALUABLE INFORMATION FOR EXTRMEME TORI FANS LIKE MYSELF HERE. if you love live tori material or rare songs which are not in print, you can often go the www.hereinmyhead.com website & pull up mp3s of all your favorite rarities. this is where i have found most of my songs for my extensive tori collection. rumour also has it you can go to www.toritraders.com where you can download full length concerts or cover art for cd cases. from what i've read or heard, this can be done with dial-up service but the process of downloading could take up to five days whereas a high speed connection would only take about five hours. as of yet, i have not tried this so i cannot substantiate the rumour but i found that tidbit to be very interesting & i figured tori fans might find this useful in addition to purcahsing this methodically researched volume of work. needless to say, this collection book sitting on his coffee table or by the computer right near the bible.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book, A Little Disappointed Though
I purchased this book recently. It is surprisingly heavy and is packed wih pictures and info. Really a must-have for collectors.
I have a few critisisms: first, there are no prices or values for the items, which I thought there would be.I realize that prices and availability fluctuate after several years making it difficult to place a value on certain items, but even including the original store prices would have been better than nothing. Second, I was very disappointed to find that the book does not include any of the merchandise sold on the tours (with the exception of the UTP and BFP tour books), such as tour necklaces, t-shirts, and other items. I thought this was a pretty big omission considering the popularity and collectibility of such items.
Despite those things, it is a great book to have, I would recommend picking one up if you plan to start collecting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty good!
Very simplistic and basic transcriptions. Some of which, including Icicle, are lovely. It's also good for arrangements for people who don't sing and play at the same time. Actually, it's not difficult to plat from this book at all! :)

4-0 out of 5 stars good but simple
i have a lot of tori music, this one is good and has some different and original versionsof songs, but i have to admit, they are very simplified versions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some good, some a bit lacking, but all fun to play.
This was the first Tori book I bought and I was not at all disappointed.First of all, the songs included are Cornflake Girl, Blood Roses, Silent All These Years, Icicle, Caught A Lite Sneeze, Over The Rainbow, Hey Jupiter, and In The Springtime Of His Voodoo. The transcriptions of Over The Rainbow, Cornflake Girl, Caught A Lite Sneeze, Hey Jupiter, and Icicle are absolutely superb.Although many people disagree with the practice of putting the melody into the accompaniment, as a pianist who cannot sing, I am thankful for it -- all of the songs other than Hey Jupiter double as piano solos for those of us who don't want to desecrate Tori's songs by trying to sing them.;)On the other hand, In The Springtime Of His Voodoo is just about unbearable with its piano lines stripped down to, at most times, one or two notes and doesn't come close to the LP recording. The other songs are all moderately well-done.I would recommend this book on the whole, however, as the rhythms are great and flow nicely and the songs are definitely fun to play, especially if you can find someone to sing with you.I'm not at all sorry I bought it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not What You Think It Is
Based on the title, I purchased this book thinking it would be commentary from Tori on life, her music and lyrics or philosophies.Instead, this is merely a compilation of quotes and fashion pictures - just like a coffee table book. Although she is a beautiful woman with funny and intriquing comments, I'm more interested in her thoughts....If you were looking for "Images and Insights", read her Biography.

3-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE Tori, but.....
Although the book is full of wonderful pictures I was a little disappointed that there wasn't much to read.I love pictures of Tori, but these were much of the same style (backround, hairstyle, pose, etc.).I dohave All These Years which is an absolutely amazing book that I could'vedone fine with just pictures because she just looks gorgeous in every one. Now that's a great book!I am a big Tori fan, but this book just didn't doanything for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pictures, Pictures, and more Eyecandy . . .
It's a pretty book and almost entirely pictures.I was rather under the idea that it was going to have more text --text that allowed what Tori was really thinking about. It does provide brief exerpts from numerousarticles, but most of them, I found anyway to be too brief. You're gettinga great deal of images, but the insight is limited --so beware.I am gladto have this book, so don't get me wrong.I just wanted to let interestedreaders know that there isn't a whole lot to read . . .

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW...I am stunned
This is just an excellent addition to any toriphile's collection. I wentto a show, had the book autographed and it was beautiful...My favorite toribook because it lets you see her art through her own eyes...and combinedwith Cindy Palmano's amazing photos...just wow!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful! An insight into Tori's soul.
This book is great for anyone who wants to know Tori's private thoughts and feelings. It gives a better understanding of the woman behind the name.I loved this book! ... Read more
