Extractions: Actors and Behind the scenes Todd Haynes Writer Director and Creator Todd is, by far, one of my favorite directors. But I can't say that he's very creative (considering, it's pretty much the David Bowie/Iggy Pop story, and pratically every other line is written by Oscar Wilde). DON'T GET ME WRONG, I still LOVE Todd for wrapping it all up in a glittery package named Velvet Goldmine, and even adding his own Barbies. (go to my Todd Haynes site, Outspoken Christian Bale as Arthur Stuart (Little Women, A Midsummernight's Dream) I recently heard that Christian is "the most popular actor on the net," and not very surprising, if you've seen any of his work. He's not only a good actor, but VERY good looking (of course most people in Velvet Goldmine are). The alluring Christian takes us through Arthur's adolesence WITH him. He manages to not only represent the eyelined-teenage-glam-rock fans, but also appeal to us as the New York Herald leather-jacketed reporter with a glittery past.

Ever since all the hype's died down about electronica being the "next big thing," the genre has gotten better and better. Artists like DeeJay Punk-Roc and even The Crystal Method have saved the music from falling into critical obscurity. Now, here comes along Micko Westmoreland, a.k.a. The Bowling Green. On his debut LP, Westmoreland delivers a huge chunk of tasty sound bytes. Starting off with "Urksome Melody," Westmoreland successfully (and surprisingly) fuses some disco licks with some gangsta mood noise. Nothing prepares you for what follows. Songs like "Light From a Different Sun," a brilliant industrial techno tune, and the slightly off-kilter "Meanwhile Gardens" all add up to a brilliant electronica album. Yet, the real beauty of this album is how Westmoreland finds a way to balance out the use of his beats and the bass; an area where many artists have trouble with. Neither the beats or the bass seem to rule the album, both jump out at you and seem to pull you in. Don't give up on electronica yet because I guarantee that if more artists like The Bowling Green emerge from the underground, the genre will be back on its feet in no time.

Those of you who thought electronic music was about flicking a few switches and leaving all the hard work to the machines are in for a bit of a shock. In Velvet Goldmine , he glorifies the glam-rock stars of the '70s, as personified by his piquantly intertwined lead characters, Brian Slade (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) and Curt Wild (Ewan McGregor). The film consciously apes the structure of Citizen Kane , being an investigation into the life of Slade, who staged his own mid-performance assassination which effectively ended his career.
