Extractions: Long before "Bubbles in the Wine", "America's Biggest Little Band" (each musician could play several instruments) toured the Midwest, specializing in polkas, waltzes, schottisches and novelty instrumentation. The band also broadcast over WNAX in Yankton, South Dakota starting in late 1927. Later they were known as Lawrence Welk and his Hotsy Totsy Boys and, from 1934 to 1937, as Lawrence Welk and his Honolulu Fruit Gum Orchestra after Welk "sponsored" himself with "Welk's Honolulu Fruit Chewing Gum." To pay for a new professional accordion he purchased, Welk played local farm dances. Later he added a saxophone player, a drummer, and a piano player, forming his first band. The band gained recognition for their program on WNAX, Yankton, South Dakota, in 1935. In the years to follow, they went on to play hotels and resorts, eventually playing in the top ballrooms in the nation. From 1950-1955, the Lawrence Welk Orchestra appeared on KTLA-TV in Los Angeles, California, and so began the many years of televised performances of Welk and the Champagne Music Makers. Welk also authored several books including: Wunnerful, Wunnerful; Ah One, Ah Two; and My America, Your America.

Best Of Lawrence Welk Artist: Lawrence Welk Released: 07/15/1993 Label: Ranwood Records Lawrence Welk was born on March 11th, 1903 in Strasburg, North Dakota. After achieving a measure of competence on the piano-accordion, he formed a dance band in the mid-20s, and soon became immensely popular, with engagements at leading hotels and endless one-night stands on the country's dancehall circuit. The band was widely criticized in the musical press for its lack of imagination and simplistic arrangements, coupled with occasionally elementary playing. Nevertheless, Welk's star continued to rise and his became one of the most successful broadcasting bands in the history of American popular music. Welk called his style 'champagne music' and he made no concessions to changing tastes, firmly believing that he knew exactly what middle-Americans wanted to hear. He must have been right, because he retained his popularity throughout the 30s and 40s, and in 1951 his regular radio shows transferred smoothly to television. For the next four years he had a weekly show from the Aragon Ballroom at Pacific Ocean Park, and in 1955 switched to ABC with even greater success. In 1961, two of his albums spent the entire year in the charts, with Calcutta holding the number 1 spot for 11 weeks. During his unprecedented chart run between 1956 and 1972, no less than 42 albums made the lists.

After internal debates over the esthetics, suitability and demographics of airing repackaged reruns of The Lawrence Welk Show , some 150 public TV licensees have scheduled the show, now [1992] in its fifth season on public TV. (This week's episode is "Songs of the Islands.") The demographics are extreme, even for a show on public TV. Seventy-four percent of its viewers are 65 or older. "There's probably nothing older than this," says audience researcher David LeRoy. But the fans' devotion is extreme as well. The swing bandleader's musical variety show isn't on the PBS schedule, but in November [1991], it was either the first or second highest-rated nationally distributed show on public TV, depending on how you express the audience size.

It was rather surprizing to me that teenagers, in the era of Rock and Roll, would be watching a show that featured mostly champagne music. It was very interesting watching the show grow as it went through the years and the number of people that got their start with Larence Welk." In 1955, The Lawrence Welk Show first aired on network television. Some called it "champagne music." For 16 years on Saturday night, the show filled the homes of the young and old audience. I remember as a child, sitting with my parents in our family room watching the man and the music. Admittedly, as a child, I wasn't too fond of the idea of watching Mr. Welk and his regulars, but what kid liked what his parents did! From talking to other people, I wasn't the only one made to sit and watch the show with my family. Years later, I've grown to appreciate Mr. Welk and the family entertainment he brought to homes everywhere. This is especially true in a day and age when you turn the television on and it's hard to find a good family show. Even today, you can turn the television on and see the show being re-run.

They had a large screen television in the pool room at the activity center: no one turned it on. Guests froliced in the pool, threw horseshoes, or played shuffleboard. Duffers trotted around the golf course. Things weren't falling from their sky, so they enjoyed themselves. The villas had names like Camelot, Brigadoon, Oklahoma, Melody Hill, Riviera, Candy, and Sunny which is where my mother's timeshare was located. Candy was situated on a low hill. If you had a place higher up, they gave you a golf cart. I don't know if a doctor or a nurse was on duty: plenty of those visiting could have stood one. A firetruck was parked outside the reception center when we arrived. Farther still, a paramedic vehicle stood outside the theater, its lights glowing no less bright than the fires that ended the flights of Columbia the following day.
