The list of Elfi von Dassanowsky 's talents and achievements support such superlatives as few biographies rarely do: opera singer, pianist, actress, film studio founder, producer, musical theater creator, teacher, cultural diplomat, humanitarian. Born in Vienna, Austria, Elfi was at age 15, the youngest woman admitted to Vienna's famed Academy of Music. While still a student, she was chosen by film director Karl Hartl to teach to his rising new star, Curd Jurgens. Her budding operatic career was halted for extended labor service when she declined membership in Nazi organizations, But her talent and beauty allowed her a second chance, and UFA Studios in Berlin offered her a start film contract in 1944, which she also rejected. Today Elfi is an arts consultant, writer and active member of international cultural organizations including the Austrian American Film Association. Currently penning an autobiography that has already garnered media interest, she plans on producing again, this time with her son, Robert, a writer and Professor of film at the University of Colorado. Elfi has been honored by the cities of Los Angeles and Vienna, as well as by the State of California which declared February 2, 1996, "Elfi von Dassanowsky Day." She is the recipient of the Austrian Film Archive Lifetime Achievement Medal and the UNESCO Mozart Medal for her promotion of peace through the art. As the world press has often noted, Elfi continues to be an international role model to women in the arts and society.
