The cast is mostly unknown with the exception of Grant Shaud, who played Miles for years on "Murphy Brown". I've seen this before. Gone midseason. There's nothing compelling for me. Good thing that it's right between "Futurama" and "The Simpsons", essentially Fox' only hammock slot. It's up against the second half-hours of "60 Minutes" and "Dateline" as well as "Wonderful World of Disney" & the WB's encore presentation of the "Gilmore Girls" first season. It might build an audience if Fox lets it, but I doubt it. What They Say Narrated by the adult Beene, this comedy recalls growing up during the Cold War era of the 1960s when drills involving fallout shelters was commonplace during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Things are complicated by an eccentric family, a teacher who can't stand him and the little red-haired girl he can't have.

In 1962 (when it's set) Oliver is 11 years old. In 1962 I was 11, too, and I have a long memory. Take it from me, "Oliver Beene" isn't just funny. It's authentic. The basic ingredients of this Fox comedy, which premieres Sunday at 8:30 p.m. will be familiar to TV viewers of any age. But "Oliver Beene" is more than vintage cars, dweebish fashions and timely references to "the Russkies" and Ed Sullivan. It's more than "The Wonder Years" by way of "Malcolm in the Middle," whose wry tone and penchant for fantasy moments it shares. STARRING: Grant Rosenmeyer, Wendy Makkena, Grant Shaud, Andrew Lawrence That's a shame, because "Oliver Beene" (8:30 p.m. Sunday) has improved since Fox sent the show's original pilot to critics last summer (that episode will air at some point in the series' run) and is less crude than what's emphasized in previews. Set in 1962 Rego Park, Queens, the series obviously owes its existence to its lead-in, "Malcolm in the Middle." But "Beene" strives for a tone closer to, say, "A Christmas Story." It rarely reaches that level, but when episodes focus on the kids, it comes close.
