Extractions: Japan Times, August 5, 2002 HIROSHIMA On the 57th anniversary of the first atomic bombing, the view from this reborn city was of a world that since Sept. 11 has turned its back on the message of the bomb's survivors. During the anniversary ceremony on Tuesday, Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba strongly criticized what he described as the unilateral approach of the United States administration of George W. Bush in dealing with global problems. "The United States government has no right to force Pax Americana on the rest of us, or unilaterally determine the fate of the world," Akiba said in the city's annual peace declaration at Peace Memorial Park in Naka Ward. "The probability that nuclear weapons will be used and the danger of nuclear war are increasing," especially in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the U.S., to which the Bush administration responded with its war on terrorism. "The path of reconciliation, severing the chain of hatred, violence and retaliation, so long advocated by the survivors (of the 1945 atomic bombing) has been abandoned," Akiba said.

Extractions: LATE SHOW NEWS #230 January 5, 1999 by Aaron Barnhart To join or leave the LATE-SHOW-NEWS mailing list, see instructions at end of message. Perhaps nostalgic for his days as a panelist on "The Gong Show" 20 years ago, David Letterman is spotlighting "the unknown comic" on his program this week. Monday, it was Bryan Callen (who actually is known to those of you who are regular "MAD TV" viewers). Tuesday it's Greg Behrendt, who USA TODAY reports is developing a one-man show for HBO. Thursday it's Jason Kuller, a lawyer turned comedian and Friday Jeff Gaffigan, whom you'll actually recognize from the many TV commercials he's done ... "Dennis Miller Live" is back, and not a moment too soon, what with all those Chris Rock items popping up in the tabs. Long-longtime reader Val Dodge notes that Canada's Comedy Network is picking up the show on Saturday nights at 9 pm, starting this weekend ... "SNL" is repackaging old bits one more time for prime time, when "'Saturday Night Live': Best of TV Parodies" attacks on NBC this Saturday at 8 (you know, the erstwhile Bo Derek "Wind on Water" spot?) ... Also, Cinescape reports that the Robert Smigel "SNL" bit "The X-Presidents" may be developed into a feature film ... The Conan O'Brien episode of "Lateline" airs this week, we have confirmed. Al Franken's terrifically smart sitcom returns to NBC Wednesday at 9. *** Reader mail: The always helpful Sandy McMurray at the Toronto Sun responds to last week's reader inquiry. He writes, "I haven't seen enough of Bonnie Hunt in 1998 either, but according to the Internet Movie Database, she wasn't sitting home watching TV. Bonnie provided the voice of Rosie (the black widow spider) in 'A Bug's Life.' She played the part of Linda Streicher (the narrator) in the movie 'Kissing a Fool.' She's cast in two movies that are scheduled to appear in '99: 'Random Hearts' (a Sydney Pollack film, starring Harrison Ford) and a thriller called 'The Green Mile.' A Bonnie Hunt fan page (a potential stalker, really) also mentions that Bonnie is the writer and director of a project called 'Return to Me' which is 'in production' and may star David Duchovny. Or not." Sandy also had the best comeback to my lead item last week: "It's a little early to be annoyed at Tom Snyder, isn't it? Wait until he changes his mind and agrees to talk to Barbara Walters, THEN get 'churlish'!" ... Here's the URL Sandy mentioned: I got several letters like this one from Richard Hooles after revealing that "Friday Night's" Rita Sever was married to one of her bosses, NBC late-night exec Gary Considine: "Prior to Rita's arrival several years ago, 'Friday Night' underwent so many host and format changes it wasn't funny. Now, after so many years, Rita and the show have become uninteresting and stagnant, yet, they remain on the air unchallenged. I think I can now safely understand why! 'Friday Night' and Ms. Rita Sever have lost a viewer with their deception. Thank you for opening my eyes to late night TV's biggest scam." Actually, I think the biggest scam in late night are those free "Nightline" toaster ovens they handed out to TV critics ... Mail arrived from all across the spectrum regarding Alec Baldwin's anti-anti-Clinton tirade on "Late Night," including this one from Jefferson Spear: "If Charlton Heston or Mel Gibson had made Baldwin-like comments about the Perjurer-in-Chief, I'm sure the always jolly Democrats like Maxine Waters, Barney Frank, James Carville and Larry Flynt would have been giggling hysterically. Not." Kevin Powell, on the other hand, writes, "(Republican senator) Kit Bond is running around Missouri angry because reporters keep asking him about Clinton, when Bond now all of a sudden wants to talk about legislation. Well, guess what, GOP? Like my daddy always used to say, 'If you're going to run up the flag, you better be prepared to fight the battle.' This is a GOP Jihad, and a GOP Taliban, nothing more. And frankly, good for Alec Baldwin for being honest about his anger" ... And thank you, the dozens of you who sent your sympathies and remembrances regarding Kaila. *** Tom Heald's THIS NIGHT IN HISTORY We 1/6: In 1984, "The New Show" premieres on NBC. Produced by Lorne Michaels, it's almost identical to "Saturday Night Live"... except it's in primetime, on Friday nights, taped, a half hour shorter, and not particularly funny. But it does have Buck Henry, and guest appearances from "SCTV's" Catherine O'Hara and John Candy. Th 1/7: In 1998, "Weekend Update" anchor Norm MacDonald is demoted from his desk job and limited only to sketch work on "Saturday Night Live." Fr 1/8: In 1973, ABC lures Jack Paar back to television to host "Jack Paar Tonite" under its "Wide World of Entertainment" late night banner. Paar's program will alternate with a program hosted by Dick Cavett, ABC's "In Concert," and various movies and comedy specials. But his show is dropped from the mix in November. Sa 1/9: In 1997, a flash of brilliance on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" as musical guest Ashley MacIsaac kicks up his heels, and shows what a Scotsman wears beneath his kilt, or in this case... doesn't. "Late Night" offers to re-record his segment, but MacIsaac turns them down, and the segment airs with a strategically placed electronic blur. Su 1/10: Is it a dessert topping or a floor wax? "Saturday Night Live's" Chevy Chase delivers the good news that new "Shimmer" is both, on this day in 1976. Mo 1/11: In 1997, "Saturday Night Live's" Norm MacDonald delivers a devastating impersonation of David Letterman, with all the nervous tics and irritating non sequiturs we all know and love. "Hey, you got any gum?" Tu 1/12: In 1991, "The Superfans" sketch debuts on "Saturday Night Live," with Chris Farley, Mike Meyers, Robert Smigel and Joe Mantegna as the #1 fan of Da Bears, Bill Swerski. When the sketch returns five months later, George Wendt will take over the show as Bob Swerski, due to his "brudda Bill's frequent heart attacks." Thanks to David Tanny. Extractions: LATE SHOW NEWS #208 June 30, 1998 by Aaron Barnhart To join or leave the LATE-SHOW-NEWS mailing list, see instructions at end of message. "The Jerry Springer Show" is already late-night programming in some markets, including Los Angeles where it is going head-to-head with the 11 o'clock news and winning. Now the show's producers are offering stations the opportunity to air a repeat episode of "Springer" on weekends. Here in Kansas City, the ABC affiliate is airing it at 3:35 a.m. Saturdays, but Seattle and other markets are countering "Saturday Night Live" with the positively true tales of fat strippers, cross-dressing cheaters and the people who dump people on the air. Springer's ratings are down slightly since the show went to a no-violence policy but, in fairness, the show has also been in repeats ... "Saturday Night Live" Svengoolie Lorne Michaels has lined up his next show-stopper. It's "Superstar" and it's based on Molly Shannon's white-panty portrayal of Catholic schoolgirl Mary Katherine Gallagher. According to Variety, Paramount and NBC are negotiating a deal to co-produce the movie as part of a multi-film deal that will give NBC a bigger stake in movies based on its shows. Already produced is the Roxbury Boys vehicle coming out this fall. The trailer for that film looked exactly like the first 90 seconds of the "SNL" sketch ... Norm Macdonald's second movie vehicle, "Ballbusted," was yanked by MGM last week after the studio saw the appalling box office for "Dirty Work" ... Michael Moore is getting the word out he wants ideas for "TV Nation" and will pay $700 plus a show credit for readers whose ideas get used. Michael's main mailbox is at MMFlint@aol.com ... Frustrated European Conan fan Linzi Gallacher wants viewers to write CNBC Europe and beg them to air "Late Night" repeats, not on weekends as is its plan, but on weeknights, "just as NBC does." More info at http://www.angelfire.com/ny/ latenightnews/frontpage.html ... Dave Letterman is apparently falling for a ranch property in northwestern Montana, where he visited recently. This reminds me of the time when I was attending college in Chicago and I once caught a ride home to Billings off the ride board. My ride was a freshman, journalism major. She'd never been west but this fact hadn't stopped her from persuading her dad to buy her some land in western Montana. So that's where she spent her spring break, looking for land. I forget if she found anything she liked, but she was a journalism major and I do recall thinking, *Dad must have mighty deep pockets because he ain't never gettin' a return on this investment.* Anyway, the property Letterman's looking at is outside of Choteau on a 10,000-acre corner of the ranch owned by a guy named Jack Salmond ... Here are ratings for some of your favorite late-night shows for the week ending June 15, according to A.C. Nielsen. Read carefully because I'm only going to say this once: the numbers in parentheses are for viewers ages 18-49 the "key demo" advertisers are supposedly salivating to reach while the unbracketed numbers are for total households regardless of age. The number on the left side of the slash (/) is the show's rating (percentage of all households or 18-49 viewers in the U.S.), the second number is the show's share of households (or 18-49s) watching TV at that hour: "Tonight Show," 5.1/15 (3.0/14) "Nightline," 3.7/9 (1.6/6) "Late Show With David Letterman," 3.0/8 (1.8/8) "Politically Incorrect," 2.4/8 (1.1/6) No, Nielsen didn't supply us with Conan numbers this week. As for "Magic Hour," it got a 1.8 rating during its first week, lower than "Keenen's" average but higher than "Vibe's." *** Thanks to several readers for joggling my memory about Dennis Miller's appearance on the Tom Snyder show a few months back. Last week I printed reader mail from a viewer wanting to know why it had been nearly two years since Denny had appeared on the Letterman show. Viewer Rene Robichaud refreshed my memory. "He told Snyder he stopped doing Letterman because he hates the whole atmosphere around the set. He said Dave doesn't like to talk to people before the show and this creates an atmosphere that Dennis can't stand. Then last week, I saw Miller on 'The Tonight Show' and he was (in my opinion) sucking-up big time to Jay Leno. He was telling Jay he could see why Jay was the best, etc. I could not believe that Miller was doing this and I figured that it would be a very, very long time before his next appearance in New York." *** Tom Heald's THIS NIGHT IN HISTORY We 7/1: In 1988, on "Late Night with David Letterman," Madonna takes over Letterman's interview with Sandra Bernhard. Th 7/2: In 1969, Sonny and Cher appear on the panel of "Tonight Show with Johnny Carson." The show lasts almost as long as Cher's later marriage to Greg Allman. Fr 7/3: In 1939, "Late Show with David Letterman" player Leonard Tepper is born. The "Late Show" tries to avoid booking both Tepper and Calvert ("Larry Bud") DeForest for the same show, as they often squabble backstage over who's getting more of the "creepy guy" roles. Sa 7/4: In 1975, Prymaat weds Beldar Conehead. Su 7/5: In 1982, With "the sound of Donald Duck drowning" ushering them in, "NBC News Overnight" with Linda Ellerbee and Lloyd Dobyns debuts at 1:30 a.m. Mo 7/6: In 1925, Merv Griffin is born. (He's still alive, isn't he?) Tu 7/7: In 1993, David Letterman appears as his own self in the first of two appearances on "The Larry Sanders Show." In "Life Behind Larry," everybody has their own ideas about who should host the show being readied to follow Larry. Among them? Tom Snyder, who also turns up in a cameo. [Thanks to David Tanny, Linda Ellerbee and Karen Kanter. Special thanks to Donz5, the voice of reason in "Dr. Dolittle."] Tom Heald is currently having way too much fun with the "Saturday Night Live Goes Political" CD-Rom he got for under $10 at
