Their mother, Sara Zwilling, was one of the first female producers in Hollywood, and a former beauty queen who died of heart disease when the girls were just 11 years old. (oddly enough, zwilling means twin in German) Their father was director Boris Sagal, best known for directing the award winning mini-series "Rich Man-Poor Man" and the Sci-fi classic "The 0mega Man" with Charlton Heston. Boris Sagal was tragically Killed in 1981 while returning from location scouting on a TV movie he was set to direct entitled "World War III". He accidentally walked into the tail rotor of the helicopter he was exiting. The movie was ultimately finished with another director. The girls older sister, Katey Sagal, is also an actress best known for playing Peg Bundy on the long running Fox television series "Married With Children". Katey was also one of Bette Midler's back up singers "The Harlettes" in the 1980's and has an album of her own music out. The girls also have two older brothers, Joey Sagal, also an actor ("The Hidden", "Return of the Swamp Thing") and David, an attorney in Los Angeles.

Extractions: Few series aimed at a young market have ever succeeded in prime time on a major network, and Double Trouble was no exception, lasting for only two seasons. In an attempt to draw more viewers, it was completely revamped for the second season, with a new theme song and supporting cast. There was also a greater emphasis on then-current '80s fashion and music. These changes reflected the 16-year-old Foster twins' new lives, as they left Des Moines to pursue their careers in New York City. However, a wiser move would have been to air it on Saturday mornings, as NBC did with Saved By The Bell which lasted for many more years, because of its youth-friendly time slot. This would have ensured Double Trouble a far longer and more successful run. In the show, Jean Sagal played flighty "Kate Foster", and Liz Sagal played serious "Allison Foster"...but in real life, Jean was the serious twin and Liz was the outgoing one. The girls (who were 24 when the series began) were originally cast to play the characters closest to their own personalities. But when Norman Lear happened to see them rehearsing, he suggested they switch roles. As it turned out, they were better at mimicking each other, than acting like themselves!

The passion was for attractive twins... and these girls were that. Cute, sorta sexy, sorta not, but the potential for wondrous fun was there. I have to be honest.... I liked Liz better than Jean, if only because she played the serious one on "Double Trouble" (TV Series from 1984). I always found her to be quietly sexy in a way the "wild one" was not. But the surprising thing is that in real life Jean was the quiet one and Liz was the feisty one. The producers (and perhaps the twins) decided it would be good for the two to change their traditional roles. It worked for me! I first noticed the twins in "Grease II" but didn't really care a flip for them at the time. Too many other sexy women in that film to drool over. It was not until they showed up in "Double Trouble" that I really took an interest. Oh! The potential! A real show with real twins! None of that Patty Duke/Hayley Mills double camera crap. Real twins. Really pretty. I was in heaven.
