Extractions: Nearly a decade after his death, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry continues to be one of the hottest producers in sci-fi TV. Spurred by the recent ratings success of Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda, the Great Bird of the Galaxy's widow is prepping two more series based on ideas developed by her late husband. First up is Gene Roddenberry's Starship, a science fiction adventure with a twist. "It's being written specifically for animation," Majel Barrett Roddenberry (a.k.a. Trek's Nurse Chapel and Lwaxana Troi) recently told Cinescape contributor John Muir. "We're developing it with [Marvel Comics legend] Stan Lee, who is wonderful," she says.

Advertise with Us 20 questions Background Majel Barrett Roddenberry is admittedly illiterate when it comes to computers, but that hasn't kept her from being the voice of the U.S.S. Enterprise or several other bits of Star Trek circuitry over the past 30 years. Then again, the 58-year-old doesn't have much medical training and her most famous role might be as the prim Nurse Chapel from the original Star Trek series. Her interstellar career was helped along by dating Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, whom she later married. Now that Gene has passed on, she continues his lifelong mission of spreading the message of peace, harmony and space travel. Majel, 58,works as a public representative for NASA and wants to see the program beefed up. She's currently producing and developing Gene Roddenberry's Earth , the last program he was working on before he died. Of all the parts she's played, her favorite is Lwaxana Troi from Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine . The saucy character, she says, proves that there can be life after 40.

In 1963, Gene cast Majel in "The Lieutenant", a short-lived series of his, and in 1964 the role of "Number One" in Gene's new series called "Star Trek". NBC rejected the pilot. BBC Online - Cult - Star Trek - Interview - Majel Barrett majel barrett Mrs. Gene Rodeberry was involved with Star trek from the word go she Why did Gene roddenberry attempt a series no-one had ever tried before? http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/st/interviews/barrett/index.shtml
Extractions: Why did Gene Roddenberry attempt a series no-one had ever tried before? They wanted a television show that had to do with science fiction and Gene didnt know anything about science fiction. He absolutely knew nothing. But he knew people and he was head writer for Have Gun Will Travel, and if you took those early Star Treks that we did and put us in a western wardrobe and put us on wagon train going west, we can say the same lines. So he didnt bother to do science fiction, because he didnt know anything about it. Everybody accepted it. You put funny people in funny costumes and paint them green and we could talk about anything we wanted to, because that was the only thing that fascinated Gene about this particular genre. Censorship was so bad in those days, you couldnt talk about war, black-white situation, you couldnt even talk about mother love. We took Frank Grosh and painted him half-black and half-white and his adversary was half-white and half-black and put the two of them at each other and it got through the censors. They never realised that that was what was going on. Once its up on the screen its too late and Gene got to talk about some of the problems that we had today that way.

Extractions: For years, Majel Barrett had appeared among the esteemed celebrities at cult science fiction conventions both as "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry's widow and for her recurring roles in all three "Star Trek" television series and two of the six motion pictures. And each time she mentioned what many consider "Star Trek's" key rival the Emmy Award-winning TV series, "Babylon 5" the response, Barrett remembers appreciatively, were shouts of "Bravo!" and "Hooray!," followed by applause. Then finally, last fall Barrett's intergalactic path fatefully converged at a sci-fi convention in England with that of JMS as "Babylon 5's" revered creator, J. Michael Straczynski, is know by his legions of on-line internet fans. It seems that word had reached Straczynski that "The First Lady of Star Trek" would welcome an invitation to appear in his compelling space saga, in which the competing interests of five diverse races (four of them alien) threaten to escalate into an interstellar holocaust. So upon meeting Barrett, Straczynski extended an invitation for her to appear in a pivotal guest role. She graciously accepted. The script was delivered to her hotel the next morning. "And six weeks later we shot the show. It was just that simple. Just that easy," she delightfully recounts. "It's the most incredible thing I've ever seen. This is a big, important drama which is playing out over a period of five years, and Joe (Straczynski) knows exactly where this story is going to go and how it's going to get there," Barrett says of the show's unique continuing storyline.
