En sus obras utiliza elementos barrocos franceses e italianos y formas musicales tradicionales inglesas. Nació en Westminster (actual Londres), procedente de una familia de músicos. Entró como cantante en la Capilla Real a la edad de 10 años y cuando su voz cambió pasó a trabajar con el conservador de los instrumentos reales. En 1677 ocupó el cargo de compositor de los violines del rey, y tres años después sucedió a John Blow en el puesto de organista de la Abadía de Westminster. En 1682 fue nombrado organista de la Capilla Real y en 1683 compositor ordinario del King's Musick, cargo de gran importancia bajo el reinado de Carlos II. Más tarde fue clavicembalista con el rey Jacobo II. Fue también profesor de música de miembros de la aristocracia, compuso odas y anthems ceremoniales para eventos reales, así como obras para el ámbito teatral, religioso y doméstico. Tal vez las obras más famosas de Purcell sean las de teatro, al que comenzó a dedicar mayor atención a medida que la música religiosa iba decayendo. Su única ópera es Dido y Eneas, obra maestra basada en una tragedia de Nahum Tate y estrenada en 1689. The date of this invention is not known, but it was familiar to the Arabs as early as the 8th century, though it does not seem to have come into common use in India before the end of the 18th century. Purcell worked for the cream of society: his patrons included four English monarchs - Charles II, James II, William III and Mary II. During his short life (he died at 36) he composed over 500 works, including a good amount of work for the theatre. Some obscurity covers Henry Purcell's earliest years, but tradition generally places his birth in a house in Old Pye Street, Westminster, London, in the year before the Reformation of the Monarchy in England. His father, also Henry, and his uncle Thomas, who adopted him on his father's death in 1664, were both employed as singers in the Chapel Royal. It was a good time to be a musician: Charles II loved music and made 48 new appointments in the first year of his reign. Young Henry was taught by his two relatives and Henry Cooke, Pelham Humfrey and Matthew Locke - all respected musicians of the day. He became a chorister of the Chapel Royal when he was six and started to compose when he was nine. Then, when he was 12, he wrote his first birthday ode for Charles II: 'An Address of the Children of the Chapel Royal to the King'. In 1673, Purcell's voice broke and he was appointed Assistant Keeper of the King's Instruments. From 1674-78 he was made responsible for the tuning of the organ at Westminster Abbey and for the copyists there. In 1677, aged 18, he succeeded Locke as Composer in Ordinary for the Violin: that is, he wrote for Charles II's string orchestra of 24 violins.
