We had some rough years, starting with that truly unsinkable artistic cinematic failure "Titanic," and then some unthinkable mistakes in the years following (robbing Cate Blanchett for "Elizabeth," "Gladiator for 2000's Best Picture instead of "Traffic." What were they thinking?). To be fair and truthful, I have yet to see "A Beautiful Mind," and although I have been highly critical of Ron Howard's baby, I can't comment about whether or not it deserves the year's highest honor in the field of cinema. Everyone's a critic, and I'm no exception. Until I watch Howard's undoubtedly emotional epic of a film and shed my tears like many have done, I can't say anything.

Extractions: Peggy Simpson Curry was born in Scotland in 1911, Peggy Simpson and her family moved to Walden, Colorado where she grew up on a real working ranch. At the tender age of nine, her first poem, "Evening on the Ranch," was published in the Jackson County Star newspaper. And a star was born. But before that star could really shine, it needed a little polish. She attended high school in Denver, then majored in journalism at the University of Wyoming. She married Bill Curry in 1937. She wrote, "My first sales were to love pulp magazines that provoked lifted eyebrows among my friends. I didn't care; I was so excited and proud of my first check for forty-five dollars that I carried it around until the editor wrote to ask if I had received it" (The Roundup, Sept., 1956; see her photo there). She was often called the Poet Laureate of Wyoming, but besides poetry she also wrote novels, children's fiction, short stories and even sold a TV script to Walt Disney Enterprises. She taught creative writing at Casper College, beginning in 1951. Her articles and poetry appeared in such magazines as Saturday Evening Post, Good Housekeeping, Boy's Life, South Dakota Review, The Writer, and National Writer. Her books included Fire in the Water (1951), Red Wind of Wyoming (1956), So Far From Spring (1956, reprinted by Pruett, 1984), The Oil Patch (1959), Creative Fiction Writing from Experience (1964), A Shield of Clover (1970), editor of Western Romances (1973), and Summer Range (Dooryard, 1981).

Extractions: African-American men in the classroom In fewer than five years, there will be 200 young African-American men teaching in South Carolina's elementary classrooms. "Call Me Mister," a new collaborative project between Clemson, Benedict College, Claflin College, Morris College and Voorhees College, will recruit, train, fully certify and place the teachers in S.C. public schools as part of the four-year effort. "In America's elementary classrooms, the African-American male as a teacher is a figure sadly missing," said Tom Parks, associate dean for education in the College of Health, Education and Human Development. While minority enrollment in South Carolina public schools is expected to make up 39 percent of all students in the next decade, less than one percent of elementary school teachers are African-American men. "It's a unique effort and a daunting task; one which will take all five institutions to make it work," Parks said. "But we're all determined to make a difference, and we will. All of us felt it was time to stop talking and do something about the problem that educators across America have been discussing for years." One key element in the project is the development of a recruiting video designed to appeal to young African-American men in South Carolina who have recently finished high school or are about to finish high school. Sidney Portier, whose line "They Call Me Mister Tibbs" in the 1967 film In the Heat of the Night inspired the name of the project, has agreed to narrate the production.

Extractions: STARSHIP TROOPERS Adapted from the classic 1959 science fiction novel by Robert Heinlein, "Starship Troopers" pits mankind against bugkind in this $100 million special F/X extravaganza by director Paul Verhoeven. Man's colonization of the stars is abruptly halted when a race of giant, Man intelligent bugs vies for the same territory. The Bugs are bent on destroying man and it's the job of the Mobile Infantry to stop them. ROBIN: The film opens in an homage to the 1929 anti-war masterpiece, Lewis Milestone's "All Quiet On The Western Front.," with one-armed teacher, and veteran of the Bug Wars, Jean Rasczak (Michael Ironside), mesmerizing his class of young warriors-to-be with the glories of battle and the opportunity to become a Citizen - a privilege bestowed only on those who enter national (read: military) service. From here, we're introduced to the central characters. Screen newcomer Casper Van Dien is Johnny Rico, a gung-ho young guy who has ambitions of leadership and sees the Mobile Infantry as his stepping stone to command - and, to the heart of Carmen Ibanez (Denise Richards), a gung-ho young woman who has ambitions to command a starship in the war against the arachnids. (Be warned, there's a lot of gung-ho in this movie.) Johnny is not aware that beautiful, tough as nails Dizzy Flores (Dina Myer) has the hots for him, to the point where she gets assigned to his MI unit. Rounding out this love quadrangle is starship officer Zander Barcalow (Patrick Muldoon), who wants to do more with Carmen than just go into hyperspace, if you know what I mean.

A Tribute To Sidney Poitier Tribute to sidney Poitier. sidney Poitier wasn't the first What sidney Poitier did was to become the first Black sidney Poitier was so successful that he eventually became mainstream! http://classicfilm.about.com/library/weekly/aa022000a.htm
Extractions: Sidney Poitier wasn't the first great African-American movie star. Stepin Fetchit has that honor, and he played the part offscreen in a flamboyant style that he was never allowed to adopt onscreen. Poitier wasn't the first Black actor to win or even be nominated for an Oscar, either. (He was nominated for "The Defiant Ones" in 1959 and won for "Lillies of the Field" in 1964.) Hattie McDaniel won a Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in "Gone With the Wind" in 1939, twenty years earlier. He wasn't even the first great Black actor on the screen; I think most would agree that Paul Robeson deserves that honor, despite the red-baiting that obscured his marvelous career and talents. What Sidney Poitier did was to become the first Black actor to gain widespread acceptance by audiences of all races purely for his acting ability and screen presence. And he did it in a big way. In 1967 he not only starred in the biggest boxoffice hit of the year, but the #2 and #3 hits, as well. At one time, he was recognized as the #1 boxoffice star in America. So he has earned the right to be treated as a great classic star, regardless of race. And this tribute article is being written not because of Black History Month, but because February 20, 1927 is his birthday.

Basic HTML Tutorial A basic tutorial on building your first webpage http://members.tripod.com/nana43/portier.html
Extractions: Welcome This is a basic Tutorial for HTML Are you a budding webpage builder? Do you want your own page up on the Net? First and foremost you must learn a little HTML which is the language of the Web. To see what it looks like click "View" on the top of your browser and then click "Source" or "Page Source". If looking at this scares you then get a Web Page Maker from Microsoft or Claris or any of the better software manufacturers. Go for a "What You See Is What You Get" (WYSIWYG) type of Page Maker. Even with one of these programs it helps to know some HTML to get the page exactly the way you want it. We use a very basic page maker called Claris Lite to save putting in all those codes by hand but still put the finishing touches on in Notepad. When Punchy and Nana started out putting up webpages we were the first on our block to do so. What that means is we didn't have anybody to help us along with the basics. At first we used those dorky templates that are on most of the Free Web Services. Sure, they get you a page up but they are about as interesting as a newspaper page. We wanted something that was a little more fancy. Something that immediately caught the viewers eye and held it. Something a bit more original. We scoured the WWW for tutorials and anything else that could teach us something new. When we landed on a page that had something that we didn't understand we checked the "Source" to see how it was done. This is probably the best and easiest way to learn HTML...
