Extractions: Former Who's the Boss? child star Danny Pintauro admits that when it comes to finding work in Hollywood, being openly gay is the least of his problems. The now 24-year-old actor reveals that he's paid a bigger price for his eight years on the hit ABC sitcom. "There have been more consequences with being Jonathan Bower than there have been for being gay," Pintauro says in the new issue of The Advocate . "Casting directors still think of me as that kid on Who's the Boss? I'll hear that 100 times before I'll here 'You're too gay' or 'You're too out.'" The National Enquirer Judith Light 's TV offspring. Later this month, he'll reprise his off-off-Broadway role of a teen male hustler for a mini-tour of the play The Velocity of Gary (Not His Real Name) "If I'm going to have an acting career, it's going to be based on the talent that I have and the kind of roles I'm capable of playing," Pintauro insists. "Whether I'm out publicly or not, I don't think I'm the type of actor capable of playing the romantic Romeo. I'm masculine, but I'm not that straight-acting." One person who has always kept an open mind with respect to Pintauro's sexual orientation is Light, who he says has been "very supportive." And what about his Who's the Boss father figure

Anyway, I knew who he was and we talked about his life and mine. I bought him a drink and he bought me one. We talked for almost a hour. I always liked his show and he's a nice guy." Extractions: Like any self-respecting gay boy new to the Los Angeles area, I was obligated to check out the West Hollywood scene. What I found there was your usual mix of gym queens and circuit boys, writhing to interchangeable diva tunes in the various clubs. It occurred to me, however, that WeHo offers something more than your average big city gay ghetto: The prospect of spotting gay stars! Of course I had heard the rumors Tom Cruise, Keanu Reeves, John Travolta who hasn't? But these, of course, are just rumors. Then, the inevitable happened: There at the intersection of Santa Monica and San Vincente, amongst a gaggle of Latino drag queens, stood Danny Pintauro, formerly little Jonathan Bower on "Who's the Boss?"! I had heard that Danny came out of the proverbial dressing room, but I hadn't considered the implications until that very moment. My mind raced with a million questions: Had he seen Tony Danza naked? And, if so, is Tony as hung as those Internet accounts purport him to be? Did Danny and Alyssa Milano ever fight over wardrobe (this would have to have happened in her post-tomboy years)? Did Danny and those "

Extractions: THE KID'S THE BOSS "I guess those turtleneck sweaters were a pretty good giveaway," chuckles Danny Pintauro softly. "And the hair. I had a whole Flock of Seagulls thing going." Pintauro, a recently acknowledged homosexual who debuted as the irrepressible Jonathan Bower in 1984 in Who's the Boss?, can laugh now. But things weren't always so bemusing. "That was a very confusing time for me," admits Pintauro, now 24 and a gaffer on CBS's Promised Land, of the years he spent on ABC's top- rated sitcom. "I was going through puberty on TV, which was hard enough. But there were literally days when I'd walk down the hallway, and coming at me side-by-side were Tony [Danza] and Alyssa [Milano]. Talk about conficting emotions. I mean, I'd look at Alyssa and go 'Yeow, pretty woman! What's this I'm feeling?' But then I'd look at Tony, and it was 'Hubba hubba!' "I can only thank God Judith Light was there to help me straighten this all out."
