In attendance at the convention were members of FanForce from Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Houston, and even Lubbock. We also had a few of the webmasters from CollectStarWars.Com there, too. I talked to the Sci-Fi Expo organizer Ben Stevens and Ray Park's manager Larry Bore. They were gracious enough to allow us to interview Ray Park at the end of a long, busy day of signing autographs and meeting people at the show. The whole gang was able to chat with Ray one on one, take pictures, and meet him a little bit longer than usual. ( FanForce ! Membership has its privelages!) After saying our initial Hellos, we set up the video camera and conducted the interview. I apologize for the sound quality. The convention floor was a bit loud and it was sometimes difficult to hear Ray. But you should be able to understand what was said without too much problems. I also apologize for the quality of the video. I'm only able to digitize in MPEG format. It's not as compressed as Quicktime, but it gets the job done. This is the first part of the interview.     Extractions: I got a call from the stunt the stunt co-ordinator and he asked me to come in. He asked me to come in the following week and do a test fight to show George Lucas. I knew at that point they were looking for someone to play Darth Maul. For four days we rehearsed the fight and on the fifth day I was put in make-up and the fight was filmed. George Lucas saw the fight and he really liked it. I got a call from the producer, Rick McCallum a day later and he told me I got he role of Darth Maul. When was it decided your voice would be dubbed out?

    Extractions: By Franklin Harris When you think about it, Ray Park's journey from nobody to the embodiment of fanboy coolness is a bit strange. After working as a stuntman in "Mortal Combat: Annihilation," the Scottish martial artist got his big break playing Darth Maul in "Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace." Of course, much to the dismay of "Star Wars" fans everywhere, Park's role was small. While most fans wanted more of Maul's twin-bladed lightsaber and acrobatic fighting style, George Lucas wanted more Jar Jar Binks. Ray Park, before... and after, as Darth Maul. Sometimes you just have to wonder about old George. In fact, Park didn't even have a speaking part. Another actor dubbed all of Maul's lines. When Darth Maul says, "At last we shall reveal ourselves to the Jedi. At last we shall have our revenge," and other lines fanboys can quote from memory, it isn't Park's voice you're hearing. No matter. Park shines during his few minutes in "The Phantom Menace." His nimble stunt work helped give Darth Maul a cult following rivaling that of any of Lucas' other creations, and far surpassing that of the hapless Jar Jar.

    Extractions: F ilm Review INTRODUCTION Part of Jurassic Park's success depends on its ability to allow us to experience our fantasy life as though it were external reality. The danger of acting upon these, our most archaic phantasies, is removed by locating the experience of the fantasy in an external reality projected onto a screen that we agree isn't the world of the streets just outside the door of the movie house. Importantly, we, too, are removed from that external reality and are securely seated in a dark room, hidden from that more real world. A blockbuster film reaches its status because it portrays fantasies harbored secretly by a great many of us. Fantasies brought to life in this intermediate reality that are fundamental to our most intimate relations and that are potentially destructive of those same relations, if we were ever to act upon them. Jurassic Park tackles the issue of gender related narcissism and hatred. The skillful use of humor, pace, and spectacular effects that create the polished surface of the film allow us to experience both the narcissism, fear, and hatred towards a life that exists outside our control which seems inherent in our society. We are given the opportunity to experience these fantasies and emotions without personal involvement, without risk and certainly without the burden of personal responsibility. A STARTLING DISREGARD OF CHILDREN PREOCCUPATION WITH DEADNESS More subtle is the narcissism of the female character. She is perfect, and therefore, undergoes no change in the course of the film. However, her perfection appears based on the idea that she has no aggression of her own and no needs in the relationships other than to persuade Dr. Grant to have children. Of course, no human being is devoid of aggression or the need to act beyond a merely biological role. It is as if it is denied that she has the capacity to compete for power. The female character's only retort is to assert that she needn't compete because she is innately powerful.
