A l'heure qu'il est (et il est vraiment très tard ou tôt si vous préférez) je me demande comment l'idée saugrenue de tenter la critique de Trouble Maker , m'est passée par la tête Ce film monumental, ce chef-d'uvre du cinéma asiatique est à la comédie sentimentale ce qu' Ebola Syndrome Kid de Chaplin, mais bon, passons S'installe donc une relation père/fils entre nos deux protagonistes, l'enfant se faisant passer pour un orphelin. Les deux autres personnages du films sont donc Takeshi Kaneshiro, élève dans le fameux lycée, qui tente désespérément de s'attirer les faveurs d'une fille dont il est éperdument amoureux, et ce, par tous les moyens possibles et imaginables (il faut le voir pour le croire ), et Athena Chu (ravissante comme d'habitude), une vendeuse de fleurs aveugle, dont Ng Man-Tat s'est amouraché. Ces séquences, même si l'on a parfois l'impression de se trouver dans des films différents (par exemple tout ce qui se passe dans le lycée aurait très bien pu se trouver dans

Extractions: Holy Weapon Good Lord. It feels like the patients have taken over the asylum in this totally over the top and out of control kung-fu comedy/action film. The phrase The Agony and the Ecstasy fits the bill here with only a slight exaggeration. The agony would be Wong Jing and the ecstasy would be Ching Siu-Tung. The film is primarily a nonsense comedy that is all Wong Jing with occasional action fantasy sequences thrown in that are the work of Ching Siu-Tung. Nonsense comedy (mou lei-tau) generally means that anything goes that there is no real need to tie it into the structure, plot or time period of the film. Stephen Chow is a master of this brand of humor, but it is essential that most of the separate pieces are funny or it will collapse under its own weight and that is what happens here. Though the actors are clearly working very hard to make the comedy work, very little of it struck me as funny. At times I felt so numb from the attempted humor that you could have stuck a pin in me and I would not have felt a thing. I usually enjoy these sorts of crazy antics such as in a similar film -Flying Dagger but the comedy here just left me itching to fast forward to the next action sequence. Now the action directed by Ching Siu-Tung (Chinese Ghost Story, Heroic Trio, Dragon Inn, Swordsman II) is wonderful to watch. Though it is just as over the top as the comedy, it is spectacular and imaginative and tremendously fun. The film has more wire work than a Boeing 747 and there are probably more miles covered flying as well. At times there are ten or more people zipping around in the air and fighting on wires. Truth be told, it is more kung-fu theater than kung-fu fighting as only a few of the actors are legitimate kung-fu action stars.

The two of them have since appeared together in many more of Chows films and have developed a real bounce off one another type of chemistry. After the huge popularity of Chow Yun Fats 1989 God of Gamblers, there was an outpouring of films with gambling themes. Chow, though going for the humorous angle, was clearly influenced by that film and at one point he actually watches God of Gamblers in order to learn how to look cool. Of course when he makes a grand entrance in slow-mo ala God of Gamblers everyone thinks he is crazy. Chow comes from the Mainland to stay with his uncle Ng Man-Tat who soon learns that Chow has psychic powers and the ability to look through things. Chow is such an innocent that he has never used his powers for any personal gain, but under the wise (and greedy) tutelage of his uncle, Chow is directed into the world of gambling. Clearly the ability to see the cards and read the minds of horses is a big plus and soon Ng Man-Tat and Chow are making lots of money and coming to the attention of others. On one occasion a gang of thugs come after them and Chow displays some stunning martial arts abilities. Eventually he comes across the beautifully divine angular looks of Cheung Man who is a killer for a big shot gambler Paul Chun Pui and falls madly in love with her. Cheung Man was to become Chows favorite female co-star for many years until a falling out. She looks great here has some very nice action scenes and nearly steals every scene she is in.

SWORD STAINED was one of the many martial-arts films that flopped despite it's obvious qualities. The emphasis here is on action, and there's lots of it, presented in an energetic, "anything goes" fashion, mixed with melodrama, less-than-highbrow humour and sizeable chunks of gore. An action-fest as only HK producers can make it. Rather strange though to see Danny Lee stepping out of his usual cop role to play the "Golden Snake Man", a morally ambiguous swordsman with supernatural powers (Naturally!). You may also enjoy the comic antiques of Cheung Man and Ng Man-Tat, goofy special effects and some of the best wire-work in recent memory. Don't let yourself be fooled by
