Extractions: By Ramsey Crow First telecast in the fall of 1970, the Mary Tyler Moore show was part of the urban-career-girl genre first popularized in the late 60s. After breaking up with a man she had been dating for several years, Mary Richards (Mary Tyler Moore) moved into a studio apartment in Minneapolis and found a job as assistant producer of the local television news show on WJM-TV. Personifying the new independent woman of the decade, Mary was open to marriage to the right man yet content with her life and career. At WJM-TV she worked for quick-tempered producer, Lou Grant (Edward Asner), who had a soft spot for Mary. Lou was relentlessly pursued by Sue Ann Nivens (Betty White) the forty-something star of the

The Mary Tyler Moore Show The 1970s. THE mary tyler moore SHOW. (1970 1977). I just heard that they'regiving mary tyler moore a statue in Minneapolis. Hey, why not? http://www.cinerhama.com/tvpage/seventies/mtm.html
Extractions: I just heard that they're giving Mary Tyler Moore a statue in Minneapolis. Hey, why not? Who else do you think of when you think of that fair city (does anyone remember who Fran Tarkenton was)? I adored MTM on The Dick Van Dyke Show , so I was quite happy to follow her in her new role as the shy and awkward associate producer on WJM-Minneapolis. There are actually people today who criticize that show because of how provincial and "unrealistic" that news station was but 1) TV news at that time was provincial. In fact Ted Baxter was (admittedly or not) modeled after the TV anchorman of a small Los Angeles station, George Putnam (almost as big a jerk!), and 2) This is a TV show, not reality! I'm happy to see that the show is just as popular as ever, even though I haven't seen it in years. My favourite characters in the cast were Phyllis and Sue Ann Nivens, but I loved everybody. I think I adored Phyllis because I've known women like her. Women who were "modern", liberal, and dramatic to the point of histrionic, and of course very cultured and cultivated. Yet up until Cloris Leachman created her, no character like that had ever been depicted on TV, and as far as I know, no one has since unless one considers her British counterparts, Edina and Patsy from Absolutely Fabulous . But Phyllis paved the way!

She finds work as an associate producer in a small television newsroom where the characters include Lou Grant, her gruff boss, Murray Slaughter the humorous writer, and Ted Baxter the Anchor Man who spends his time mispronouncing country names. Mary continues to hope for romance, but finds that her friends are more dependable.

And you haven't seen the last of Mary. Later this month, she'll appear in a cast reunion of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" on TV. Mary Tyler Moore The mary tyler moore Hour A retooled version of mary. This time CBStried the hour long variety/sitcom show on Sunday night at ten. http://www.spudtv.com/features/worst/mary.html
Extractions: Mary Shortly after the conclusion of the tremendously successful Mary Tyler Moore Show , came this hour long variety series. Mary was executive produced by her husband Grant Tinker. It was somewhat in the formula of The Carol Burnett Show , but far more topical in humor. Now I would think that with talent like Mary Tyler Moore and an ensemble cast that included both Michael Keaton and David Letterman that this show would be a hit. Amazingly CBS prepaid for 16 shows before any had even aired. CBS put Mary on their fall 1978 schedule on Sunday nights right after the strong lead-in show 60 Minutes The Mary Tyler Moore Hour A re-tooled version of Mary . Mary Richards, of course. On this date in 1977, we said good-bye to Mary and the crew at WJM-TV as the final episode of the Mary Tyler Moore Show aired. For seven years, Moore (1937-) portrayed Mary Richards, assistant producer of the sitcom's Six O'clock News. Mary charmed and inspired us with an upbeat and positive look at life. With enthusiasm , she got us through the tough 70s with laughter , and sometimes tears. "I'm an experienced woman; I've been around," she once said with typical self-deprecating bravado. "Well, all right, I might not've been around, but I've been... nearby." Our friend Mary was a 70s career woman on her own. Moving to a new city and living alone, she defined a new image of women. " Love is all around, no need to waste it," sang (and wrote) Sonny Curtis in the show's memorable opening theme. "You can have the town, why don't you take it. You're gonna make it after all." Intelligent and funny, strong but sweet, Mary brought her independent spirit into our homes and made us feel
