Extractions: DOMINIC MONAGHAN Date of Birth: December 8, 1976 Born in Berlin, Germany to English-speaking parents, Dominic Monaghan decided he wanted to be an actor during his second year of school when he was given a small role as one of Scrooges workers in the play A Christmas Carol . He followed that up with roles in more school plays, including landing the plum role of the Artful Dodger in Oliver . Thoroughly bitten by the acting bug, he decided to look for more roles in plays outside of school. By the age of 12, his family had moved to Manchester, England, and he joined the Manchester Youth Theatre. While studying English Literature, Drama and Geography at Sixth Form College, Monaghan worked at various jobs, including sorting mail for the post office, stocking shelves in a department store and working as a chef in a restaurant. When he was only 18 years old, never having been on a film set before, Monaghan landed the lead role of Hetty Wainthropps teenage sidekick, Geoffrey, in the television series Hetty Wainthropp Investigates , starring the famous British actress Patricia Routledge. Upon first seeing "Star Wars" at age 6, he knew he wanted to be an actor. By age 12, he was asking his parents, Austin and Aureen, for an agent. He got a soccer ball instead. Born in Berlin, Germany, to English parents, the family, including an older brother, returned to England when Dominic was 12. In order to fit in, he learned to speak with the local Manchester accent. The first of many accents he would master. Prophetically given the "Lord of the Rings" as a gift from his father at age 14, Monaghan actually got down to reading it at age 15. He now reports that he's read the books about 10 times! Its in theatre that Dom was 'discovered' and signed by an agent. By age 18, he was offered the co-starring role of Geoffrey Shawcross in BBC's "Hetty Wainthropp Investigates", opposite renowned actress Patricia Routledge. "Hetty" lasted four seasons and proved to be a huge learning experience for Dominic. He honed his comedic timing and dramatic skills, showing that he could hold his own against such seasoned veterens. Geoffrey Shawcross could have been a rather cliched teenager, but Dom gave the character humour touched with angst. Geoffrey, and Dom, grew up and matured before a nation. "Hetty Wainthropp Investigates" is currently available to PBS viewers in North America.
