Extractions: day . Attention is rapidly growing for Holly McNarland and it seems the more awareness Holly devotes to her inner self, the more attention she receives for her music. Hailing originally from Winnipeg, she moved to Vancouver three years ago to experience and surround herself with music. The choice to move has so far been a good one. It's a good thing I didn't have to find Holly in a crowd, because I hadn't met her before, and all I had seen of her were pictures from her CD and press kit. She was sporting a buzz cut on this day which was far different from the pigtails and longer hair she had before. "We were in Vernon playing with the Matthew Good Band and we didn't want to go home, but of course we had to, so both bands decided to shave their heads; it's kind of a fresh start." I can't argue with that what the hell else are you going to do in Vernon? A fresh start may accurately define the recent past for Holly. She has now secured management from Los Angeles "we just did the paperwork" put out an independent CD, Sour Pie , which has been atop the Sam's Indie Chart for a number of weeks, and has just inked a deal with MCA Canada. But, most importantly, she has put together a band that she feels is the cohesive unit she has been looking for and hopes that they will stay together for a long time to come. Bassist Mark Pullyblank, guitarist Sid Johnson and drummer Adam Drake complete the lineup. After having seen Holly McNarland open up for the Skydiggers at the Starfish Room I can see why she wants to see this band stay together for a long time. This is a good band and their heavier rock style complements Holly's intensely powerful voice. As a musical unit, they are a cohesive complement to Holly's "personal" stories and lyrics.

I'm admittedly a bit harsh on female musicians who, in my mind, always seem to be whining about the sad state of feminism in the nineties or how their abusive, alcoholic boyfriends have driven them to lesbianism. So, with this bias in mind, I didn't expect much from McNarland, but I still held out some hope that she'd follow more in the musical footsteps of Sarah McLachlan (the only woman to whom I'd even contemplate proposing marriage). After listening to Holly sing about subjects as diverse as loneliness and alien abductions (presumably a metaphor for losing oneself in love), I had to reevaluate my blanket judgment of the nineties female musician. McNarland was definitely influenced by the likes of Alanis Morrissette and Meredith Brooks, but adds something else to the mix that her predecessors lack. Holly is talented.

Extractions: Holly McNarland is an extremely talented Canadian artist. She was born in Manitoba, and is currently based in Vancouver, BC (right here!!!! :-). In 1996, at the age of 21, she independently released her first record, Sour Pie , which was a collective of songs about her very emotional life "experiences", shall we say... She also released Mr. 5 Minutes , which was basically an album of remixed songs. With such a powerful voice, Holly was noticed by Universal Music Canada. In early 1997, she released Stuff , her second album, under the Universal label. Most of the songs from Stuff , which is now available in the states, were written during a two-week period that Holly spent in a rented cabin on Galliano Island, in BC. From Stuff , Holly has currently released "Numb", "Elmo", and "Coward" for Canadian radio airplay, and video airplay on Much Music. Singles for "Coward" and "Numb" are also available. She toured with MOIST in late '98 (which is when I first saw her), and the Gandharvas. Holly was the winner for 'Best Solo Artist' at the 1998 Juno Awards held in Vancouver. It was "Intense and jouncing at the same time"-stated Donny McNeal of Rolling Stone. It was obvious to many, that Holly McNarland was just getting started. And had paved the way for herself, as well as many other women in the music industry waiting for someone like Holly to help them get on the "Road of Sucess" and start a career of their own. The next album released was "Stuff". This album showed Holly's inner-self and that her music went deeper the stud on her lower lip. It showed that she put emotion into her writing. It showed her soul, mind, and her gift of music and talent. "I'm not as serious anymore, I don't have to be completely depressed to write a song. Some of these songs are more upbeat that the older ones. I lightened up a bit,"-Quotes Holly. Holly McNarland started singing at the young age of 3! She took up the guitar at age 16, and started writing music and songs shortly after that. She made a demo tape that lead her to producer Dale Penner. Dale is still the only producer Holly uses.
