The Novels: Titus Groan, Gormenghast, and Titus Alone The stability of Gormenghast is threatened by a Steerpike's, a former kitchen boy, rise to power. (Or "Maybe if I take over the castle someone will pronounce my name correctly.") Meet the Author Gormenghast is not fantasy, but neither is it reality. It would be simplistic to view it solely as a historical or social and political commentary. However, all writing, especially fiction, is influenced by the author's life. Mervyn Peake was born in the hills of Kuling in China, the son of missionary parents. As a foreigner, he lived apart from the Chinese population. As the privileged elite lived within walls, separated from the Chinese, so does the aristrocracy of Gormenghast live separated from those around them. He had two twin sisters who died in China. The physical descriptions of Gormenghast are influenced by the pre-communist China of his childhood including the giant carvings that are like the ones on the road to Peking. Just as the Groans rely on tradition in the face of change, many upper class Chinese sought order in tradition to cope with the upheaval of the early 20th century. During the month Peake was born the 300 year old Manchu dynasty was overthrown. Peake was a war artist during World War II and one of the first people to see Belsen after it was liberated. His son Sebastian wrote "he suffered and later died as the result of seeing manifest the antithesis of joy, love, and beauty" (Daniel, p. 28). Even after the liberation the death toll remained high. Steerpike is not Hitler or Mussolini, but Steerpike is definitely influenced by the fascists of the 1930's and 1940's. Like mid-century Europe, the aristocracy was dying and stagnating, but Steerpike, like Hitler and Mussolini, was not the answer. Peake died during the 1960's, but some have compared Titus to Prince William.
