(May 28, 2001) - Legendary country music artist Hank Locklin , who helped popularize the "Nashville Sound" style of the 1950's 60's and 70's with his smooth tenor voice, has released his first new album in two decades Generations In Song. And in a unique advertising twist, Locklin will market the compact disc as a sponsor of the famous WSM Grand Ole Opry, of which Hank has been a member for 41 years. Beginning June 2, the 10:30 to 10:45 p.m. portion of the Opry will be sponsored by Hank Locklin each Saturday night throughout June. He was born in the Florida Panhandlethe northwest part of the state that adjoins the peninsular, and now he has returned there. His life has gone full circle. Some weekends, he drives to Nashville to sing a couple of songs on the Grand Ole Opry. He hangs out backstage with the slowly diminishing number of oldtimers who remember him from his hey-day, then drives home. He has even stopped touring Europe, where he performed regularly since 1957. Today, Hank Locklin is best remembered for his Fifties and early Sixties classics like Please Help Me I'm Falling and Send Me The Pillow You Dream On, but he actually started recording in the late Forties, and notched up several huge hits early in his career. He was born Lawrence Hankins Locklin in McLellan, Florida on February 15, 1918. In the late Thirties, he began performing on small stations in northwest Florida and south Alabama. Like Hank Williams, he spent the War in the Alabama shipyards building Liberty ships, then thought about entertainment as a career. He moved to Houston, Texas, and began recording there in 1949 for 4-Star Records. One of those early 4-Star records was the first version of Send Me The Pillow You Dream On recorded in 1949; another
