Extractions: Laurie David is not your typical Think Globally, Act Locally sort of environmentalist. Her husband, Larry David, co- created Seinfeld , for one thing, and now stars in his own series, Curb Your Enthusiasm . And David herself travels in privileged Hollywood circles. But she flips their good fortune on its head, mining her connections to actors, producers and movie execs to advance populist environmental campaigns. Shes the engine behind the Detroit Project and its controversial anti-SUV ads, and without her, one Santa Monica dealership would not be leading the country in sales of Toyotas gas/electric hybrid, the Prius. DEBORAH VANKIN tells us how David puts celebrity activism in the drivers seat. Plus, LARRY DAVID on the perils of being married to an environmentalist

Extractions: By Nicole D. Sconiers Make the money, dont let the money make you. Thats how actress LisaRaye sums up surviving in the cutthroat entertainment game, and so far, shes laughing all the way to the bank. During a recent visit to the set of the new 3 Dimensional Films movie Urban Love Chronicles , I got a chance to chat with the saucy siren. LisaRaye is part around the way girl, part businesswoman, but all diva. Shes passionate about her craft, and it comes across in her movements and the confident tilt of her head. Over the pre-production noise on the movie set, LisaRayes voice can be heard loud and clear. Best known as Diamond, the college student turned stripper in Ice Cubes directorial debut Players Club, LisaRaye has proven to be more than just a pinup poster girl. Now, shes about to heat up the screen again playing the voodoo queen Maria Toussaint in Urban Love Chronicles . Directed by Delven Bamn Rutledge, the film is a trilogy of hilarious urban love tales, and also stars Kathleen Bradley, Buddy Lewis

Extractions: Playing the Wood D uring opening week for The Wood At intermittent points during the game, bare-tummied Ananda cut to another location where The Wood cast members Omar Epps, Taye Diggs, and Richard T. Jones came up with stories about their own real life romantic embarrassments or on-set hijinks. Relaxing with drinks and wearing designer summer-white outfits, the young-hunky stars looked predictably beguiling and routine, stars being trotted out to pitch their product. When they talked about the movie, you got to see clips, usually involving them. The present-day story involves basic boy-bonding. In Inglewood California, Mike (Epps) and Slim (Jones) are sent by parental types to retrieve their homeboy Roland (Diggs) on his wedding day. Seems that Roland is afraid to commit to his lovely bride-to-be Lisa (LisaRaye, last seen in Ice Cube's The Players Club ) and has gone on a bender. As the three engage in sober-up strategies (coffee, pizza, dry-cleaning to remove vomit from their wedding suits), they reminisce. And so the plot spins.

React Come to think of it, there was a 1952 film starring Ronald Reagan and Virginia Mayo called She's Working Her Way Through College, which was about a burlesque star who brought out the beast in her English professor. Halliwell's Film Guide describes it as "limp and vulgar" and "just about gets by as a lowbrow timekiller."
Player's Club He already has a modern day Pam Grier in lisaraye, who plays Diamond, a noviceactress and one time erotic dancer that Cube discovered for the role. http://www.filethirteen.com/reviews/playersclub/playersclub.htm
Extractions: The Players Club (1998) Rapper Ice Cube's debut as a director proves that he has a little work to do in the field before he has perfected the craft. But it also acts as a debut for one of the more promising talents in recent memory. Cube's film revolves around a topless bar, the titular (pun intended) "Player's Club," and, in particular, a dancer named Diamond. The story begins with her walking through the burnt our ruins of the club and her voice over narration lets us know that this is where the story will eventually end. It doesn't take long for Cube to get us back to the beginning of the story, where a young Diana gets invited to work at the club by a couple of current dancer and we find ourselves on the floor of one of the trashiest dives ever to grace the screen. "The Player's Club" isn't perfect but it does show the promise of a talented director yet to come to the cinema. Cube has already established himself as a rapper, an actor, a producer of both film and music, and a writer of both as well. It won't be long until he establishes himself as a director of superb merit as well.

Extractions: Showbiz Briefs Louis Gossett Jr. will reprise his role as Daniel Stewart in "For Love of Olivia," the follow-up to the 1997 telepic "To Dance with Olivia." According to "Black Talent News," Gossett is rejoined by Robert Ulrich in the film about a small town lawyer (Gossett) who attempts to become the first black congressman from his district and finds himself involved in a murder trial. The television movie will air Sunday night, March 18, at 9:00 ET/PT on CBS. Rapper DMX, who is facing a court date for his late appearance for jail time, did not show up at a press junket for "Exit Wounds," co-starring Steven Seagal, which opens today. He also missed scheduled online and radio interviews, but was kind enough to appear for his television engagements reports. In related news, Steven Seagal was at the junket answering questions about his relationship with rapper Lil' Kim.

Extractions: "I hate you/You hate me/Let's hang Barney from a tree." Count me among the many who simply cannot stand the Jesus Christ of kids' contemporary pop culture icons, Barney the dinosaur. As I walked into the child-packed auditorium for a matinee showing of the dino's big-screen splash, Barney's Great AdventureThe Movie , I took a deep breath in preparation for what I knew would be a descent into cinematic hell. And that it wasat least for someone my age. The ostensible story involves two young siblings, Cody (Trevor Morgan) and Abby (Diana Rice), who are sent to their grandparents' farm home for a week. Abby and her (token African-American) friend Marcella (Kyla Pratt) are big Barney fans and devout followers of his gospel of imagination; stick-in-the-mud Cody hates doing "child-like" things and despises the dino. Before you can say "PBS," Abby and Marcella's stuffed Barney has come to full-size life, trying to instill some good ol' child-like imagination in Cody, who then wishes upon a star for a great adventurewhich he gets, courtesy of a large, psychedelic egg of extraterrestrial origin that just won't stay in one place. Of course, Barney can't go long without singing a song. His first appearance comes with a tune called "Imagine," and moments before Cody makes his wish, he leads the two girls in a rendition of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star." It is during this number that he encourages the audience to join in, at which point my already-cringing self was reaching for a vomit bag. The torture continued to escalate with an "Old McDonald" set piece (complete with the Barnmeister decked out in overalls) and, most excrutiatingly, a visit with bird expert Miss Goldfinch, which results in a full-blown production number whose appallingly inept choreography had me yearning for the halcyon days where Debbie Allen lent the Oscars her ever-innovative dance moves, such as having dancers hold up hula hoops during the 1995 "Circle of Life" number.
Filmcritic.com Movie Review: The Players Club A hopelessly bad hiphop drama/thriller, The Player's Club subjects us to the tragictale of lisaraye's reluctant stripper, who faces catfights, drug dealers http://www.filmcritic.com/misc/emporium.nsf/ddb5490109a79f598625623d0015f1e4/686

Film Journal : Diana Armstrong (lisaraye) gets herself thrown out of her parents' Atlanta home byarguing with her dad, then sets up housekeeping with a boyfriend who splits http://www.filmjournal.com/Article.cfm/PageID/57411330
Extractions: You can hear the pitch: schoolgirl by day, booty-shaking stripper by night. No studio executive could resist that, and were that the sum total of The Players Club , it would still be lowbrow fun. But it's actually better than that, feisty, funky, sympathetic without being condescending to the bad hand dealt many single mothers, and rudely funny to boot. The Players Club is everything the lamentable Striptease wanted to be, at God only knows what fraction of the cost. Diana Armstrong (LisaRaye) gets herself thrown out of her parents' Atlanta home by arguing with her dad, then sets up housekeeping with a boyfriend who splits after she has a baby, because he 'needs his space.' Working her way through college selling shoes is no party, but Diana didn't just fall off a turnip truck: When two flashy, trashy ladies named Ronnie and Tricks (Chrystale Wilson, Adele Givens) tell Diana she could be doing better for herself, she retorts, 'So what are you prostitutes ?' The not-so-good samaritans introduce Diana to a local strip joint called the Players Club, where she's persuaded to take the stage name Diamond and start shaking her moneymaker nightly.

Extractions: Since I have received many requests on this cat and she is truly hitting on all cylinders, welcome LisaRaye (actually just her first name) McCoy to the Temple of Goddess. Most peeps know her from her major role acting debut in Ice Cube's film, The Player's Club. Her role of Diamond, the showcase stripper for the club, went on to open plenty of bruthas' eyes, including your's truly. Before that she was found in a couple of cosmetic ads and videos. As of late you saw her in that Changing Faces video with Jaime Foxx and her unjust 10 minute scene in the bangin' movie, "The Wood." Anyway, this sweetheart reeks sex appeal and she will definitely be a force to be dealt with in the future in Black Hollywood. Much love to Lisa Raye, a true emblem of Black sensuality. Finally, would y'all jokers stop voting her your favorite Goddess!! Geez, can't y'all share the love with Erykah Badu or somebody for at least one week :0)

Jones) never thought they'd see the day their man Roland (Taye Diggs) would strut down the aisle to get married. Neither, apparently, did Roland, who ducks out just hours before the ceremony and turns up at the house of his high school sweetheart, Tanya (Tamala Jones). Though he adores his fiance (Lisaraye), Roland sees the impending nuptials as a separation from those who have always been closest to him, his neighborhood partners from Inglewood, which they fondly refer to as 'the Wood'."
