Bennett visited Herbert Hoover, The Depression president who imposed a high tariff wall on imports was so unpopular that Bennett went to unusual lengths to avoid having his picture taken with him. Twenty-five photographers were assembled on the White House lawn ready for a big photo shoot. Bennett stopped them short, saying he normally would be delighten but since this was an "unofficial visit," please don't bother. White House officials were outraged by the snub. No president since that time has been quite so unpopular north of the border as Hoover. Nor is it likely that the Republican likely to take office in Washington soon will match Hoover in disfavour. But George W. Bush will have a big hill to climb. The decision by the politicized Supreme Court, which appears to give the presidency to him, comes as unwelcome news to not only the government of Jean Chretien, but to Canadians generally. Canadians preferred the Democrat AI Gore over Bush by a large margin, 48 per cent to 29 per cent, according to an October poll.

Of particular interest are integral membrane proteins. Previously solved structures include: The catalytic domain of HMG-CoA reductase which is the rate limiting enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis; the ectodomain of transferrin receptor a paradigm for receptor mediated endocytosis which is involved in iron transport. Current efforts are focused on structure determinations for other membrane bound receptors and enzymes, as well as proteins involved in the regulation of iron transport and homeostasis. Structures of Wnt Receptors and Wnt Antagonists Complexed With Wnt We are currently interested in the Wnt receptor and the process of Wnt signaling. Wnt molecules were first discovered more than 15 years ago, and in that time they have emerged as one of the pre-eminent families of secreted signaling molecules in animal development. Wnt molecules are involved in a wide range of developmental events. These processes range from embryonic dorsal-ventral patterning, neural-tube patterning and limb formation to kidney development. In addition, inappropriate expression of the Wnt-1 molecule has been shown to cause breast cancer in mice.

Lawrence spent the early years of his life traveling a lot with his mother and father. Dad was in the Air Force, so Martin’s early upbringing was as an Air Force Brat - shipping out when duty called. Indeed, Lawrence was actually born in Frankfurt Germany on April 16th, 1965. He didn’t stay there for long, and even his traveling days ended early when his father left his mother and her six children. The Lawrence clan spent the rest of their childhood in Maryland. Martin developed a knack for comedy early on in an attempt to keep his hard working mom’s spirits up. He began developing routines which he would perform when she got home from working as a cashier. His love of laughter caused some trouble at school, where he was the class clown and every teacher’s worst nightmare. At one point, Martin even had a running bargain with one teacher that if he kept silent throughout class, he could have the final five minutes to himself. His mini comedy routines were a hit with his fellow students and Martin’s love of stand-up was born.

The 82-year old Kamen is joined by 83-year-old physicist Ugo Fano, who won for his pioneering contributions to the theory of atomic and radiation physics. The Fermi award, which was announced by President Clinton on Dec. 12, is the nation's oldest prize for achievements in science and technology. It is granted for lifetime achievements in the field of nuclear energy. Winners receive a gold medal and a $100,000 honorarium. In winning the award, Kamen joins a list that includes two of his colleagues from the Rad LabGlenn Seaborg and Luis Alvarez. Kamen is currently professor emeritus at both UC San Diego and the University of Southern California. During the 1950s and '60s, he cemented his claims to scientific greatness with his ground-breaking research in the field of bacterial cytochromes and photosynthesis. However, it was his discovery of carbon-14, the radioisotope of carbon used to trace biochemical pathways and mechanisms and to date archeological and anthropological objects, that proved to be the source of his brightest and darkest moments. Kamen's resulting scientific prominence, however, coupled with his liberal viewpoints and association with leftist intellectuals, brought him under the scrutiny of government agencies, including the FBI. In July 1944 he was declared a security risk and Lawrence was forced to dismiss him. A few years later, Kamen was brought before the House Un-American Activities Committee and his passport was revoked. He spent 10 years in the courts before finally clearing his name and winning back his passport. He also won settlements against the Washington Times-Herald and Chicago Tribune newspapers for publishing libelous articles about him.
