Kurtis refers to the 30-second credits that many big-city public TV stations give to underwritersthat PBS will not accept on national programs. The frustrated, back-against-the-wall plaint, coming from noted ex-CBS newsman, provides a bitter new anecdote for pubcasters who argue that public TV's noncommercial definition of itself is too restrictive and perhaps wholly obsolete. Bill McCarter, head of the program's co-producing station, WTTW, and a longtime advocate of marketplace funding, would endorse the view. The Peabody Award-winning series won't disappear immediately from public TV, and will generally get much more airtime in coming months. While Kurtis Productions will make the usual eight New Explorers As ever, Kurtis will tag along with scientists as they dig, peer, fly and dive into their own specialized mysteries. In the past year, he followed biologists probing the deaths of manatees, anthropologists exploring abandoned pueblo settlement, and climatologists speculating why the island of Trinidad is sinking. His favorite episode of all, last April, took him to Nepal, seeking the model for the fictional perfect valley of Shangri-La.

"Although I had accepted a job with a trial firm in Wichita, I was still reporting for a local station when a tornado literally ripped a new highway through the state capital. I was on the air at the time and saw firsthand what television can do. In this case, it saved lives with its instant warning and my career decision was made." Television held the promise of the future and Kurtis headed directly for Chicago, not knowing the next four years would be one of the most wrenching periods in the country's history. The last half of the sixties was a time of protest, riots, cities on fire, and for a young reporter seeing it from the streets of Chicago, it was an incredible "education." By 1973, Kurtis had teamed up with Walter Jacobson at WBBM-TV (CBS) and over the next nine years, they made Chicago television history. As a news team, they established a formidable record for covering news, and in the process Kurtis initiated several innovative practices which have become standards for the business today, including local "foreign correspondent" reports from the field and his "Focus" unit investigations. By 1982, CBS Network News beckoned, asking him to anchor the "CBS Morning News" from New York, where for three and-a-half years he also completed a series of hour-long documentaries for the prestigious "CBS Reports," exploring subjects from organ transplants to airline safety.

"Kurtis will bring to K-State his perspective of many years of international media experience as well as his deep appreciation for small town and rural life," Freeland said. Although Kurtis, an Independence, Kan. native, left Kansas more than 30 years ago, the state is still an important part of his life. One of Kurtis' current projects is perhaps his most challenging: the revitalization of Sedan, Kan. After a visit to Sedan, a dwindling community near Independence, Kurtis began buying commercial buildings and turned them into gift shops, restaurants and donut shops. Kurtis' restoration doesn't stop at rebuilding downtown Sedan. He wants to create a tourism hub, including visits to his 8,000-acre buffalo ranch and a replica of Laura Ingalls Wilder's cabin. The area, which Kurtis' family owns, was once home to the author of "Little House on the Prairie." Kurtis also owns part of the largest tall-grass prairie left on the globe, which he plans to protect.

As a journalism student in the early 1960s, Kurtis began his broadcast career as a student with KANU. The old-school broadcaster and native Kansan has emerged as one of cable's brand names. From his first job at WIBW in Topeka, where he spent a legendary night in 1966 covering a tornado, Kurtis had won respect for his no-nonsense style and fame for his commanding air and distinctive voice. After 30 years which included stints in Chicago and a national presence on CBS Kurtis scaled down his on-air duties. He started traveling more. And he devoted more time to a small side business making documentaries for cable. Talk about great timing. Just as Kurtis' network career was winding down, cable TV was taking off. And fueling that rocket was original, nonfiction programming, the kind Kurtis would learn to crank out in volume. Together Kurtis and the network prospered. Did Kurtis, a native of Independence, Kan., ever imagine it would turn out this way? Or that after avoiding Kansas for most of his adult life, he'd buy a 7,000-acre cattle ranch near his hometown? "I had no idea," he says with a laugh.

He's done all these murders, and he's gotten away with it, and that's partly why he does those shows: to pin his murders on someone else. He's very clever, Bill Kurtis. Clever... but crazy! They could put Bill Kurtis in jail, but what's the point? He's always there anyway, walking around in his suit, talking about DNA evidence and promising more juicy tidbits about some horrible grisly murder right after these commercials. I guess that's the ironic thing: technically, he's gotten away with all these crimes, but the fact of the matter is he's in jail all the time anyway. He just gets to wear his own clothes. I don't know why insist on having so many murder shows on A&E. If you kill 32 people and chop them up and bury them in your basement, which is that: art or entertainment? Maybe they should rename A&E "The Arts and Entertainment and Horrible Grisly Pictures of Real People Actually Being Killed Network." But then, if they were really going to be honest... To read the rest you have to buy the book!
