Hollywood Renegade SIMPP Member (1948-1958) Two new members of SIMPP during the postwar period survived the independent production shakedown to show that the independent movement and the Society itself were still viable. Sam Spiegel and Stanley Kramer represented the generation of independent producers who received their apprenticeships during the tail end of the studio system, and then came into their own as independent producers in the post- Paramount film industry. Stanley Kramer, the fiercely independent filmmaker, continued to produce successful films well into the television era. His experience with the major studios reached back to 1933, and he was something of a lower-budget operator before he joined SIMPP in 1948. But lacking the same immersion in the Hollywood business establishment as the SIMPP veterans, his entrance into the independent community was refreshing. Kramer broke through the Hollywood blacklist by freely hiring many artists subpoenaed by the HUAC . He championed a unique brand of social consciousness in order "to use film," he stated, "as a real weapon against discrimination, hatred, prejudice, and excessive power."

Kramer's nearly three dozen films garnered 80 Oscar nominations and 16 Oscar wins. His films often dealt with issues surrounding racism, war and justice. Oh, I had seen Judgment at Nuremberg a few years prior, but that was before I started associating films with their directors. Then in 1967, I was impressed with his Guess Who's Coming to Dinner , but I didn't realize then that there weren't going to be any more real winners from Stanley Kramer. He had six more films in him, but titles like RPM The Domino Principle (1976), and even Oklahoma Crude (1973) didn't do anyone proud (except maybe George C. Scott in the latter). I like to think that it was this last period that prompted Andrew Sarris's rather dismissive evaluation of Kramer: "If Stanley Kramer had not existed, he would have had to have been invented as the most extreme example of thesis or message cinema. Unfortunately, he has been such an easy and willing target for so long that his very ineptness has been encrusted with tradition. He will never be a natural, but time has proved that he is not a fake."

An early architect of the so-called"message film," Kramer tended to embrace the role of the maverick; a moviemaker willing to tackle subject matter that many considered anathema to commercial moviemaking. As early as 1949, when his second production, Champion, an uncommonly dark piece about the brutal world of professional boxing, became a surprise hit, Kramer revealed an attraction for stories hewn on the margins of American life. His passion for social justice and affection for the outsider were consistent through the decades. His characters were all misfits or heretics of one kind or another, and he loved them for it.
