Alas, The Messenger, despite some effective imagery, is a convoluted and often nonsensical endeavor. Investing the story of Joan of Arc with a trendy, new age twist results in a noncommittal film that continually moves between applauding Joan's victories, and then portraying her as a naive idealist whose accomplishments amount to nothing. Either interpretation is valid, but both are-dramatically speaking-irreconcilable, and the film refuses to commit to either one. As Joan, Milla Jojovich is, to put it charitably, not exactly up to the task (however, at the time of casting, Jojovich was Mrs. Luc Besson). The other stars of the film are obviously cast for marquee value, and given small (albeit significant) roles, such as John Malkovitch, who basically phones in his performance as Charles VII. Dustin Hoffmann, however, is effective in a small cameo, while the supporting cast offers up the best performances, most especially from Tcheky Karyo as Dunois. Much of the film plays like a poor man's Braveheart-not only in the parallels of the commoner who rallies the troops to fight English persecution, but even in the battle scenes, which actually re-stage some of the same shots from Braveheart! The atrocities committed by the English against the French are depicted with tasteless excess (including the necrofilial rape of Joan's mother). However, the film never adequately portrays any qualitative difference between the "virtuous" French and the "villainous" English. Both sides look and act identically. This problem is further exacerbated by the fact that many of the French characters are played by English actors.
