   Extractions: City Manager's Office Jesse James Jesse James Home Of all the worlds' legendary characters, few have attracted world-wide fascination like the outlaw, Jesse James. Some call him America's Robin Hood, while others see him as a cold-blooded killer. Perhaps he was all of these things. Jesse Woodson James was born in Kearney, Missouri on September 5, 1847. His father, the Rev. Robert James, was a Baptist minister who helped found William Jewell College in Liberty, Mo. Some people say it was the cruel treatment from Union soldiers that turned Frank and Jesse to a life of crime during the Civil War. Certainly during the war years they learned to kill while riding with William Quantrill and Bloody Bill Anderson. After the war, Jesse was wounded while surrendering. Within a year, Frank and Jesse are believe to have pulled off the first daylight bankrobbery in peace time. They made off with $60,000 from the Liberty, Mo. bank not far from their home, and one man was killed. For the next 15 years, the James boys roamed throughout the U.S. robbing trains and banks of their gold, building a legend that was to live more than a century after Jesse's death.

Having the JAMES surname, everyone assumes you are related. It was not an easy thing to do, but after years of hearing the "family traditions", I finally made an effort to prove (or disprove) the traditions.    Extractions: This collection consists of photographic prints and negatives relating to James Jesse Strang (1813-1856), the Mormon leader and Michigan legislator who led a community of Mormons on Beaver Island, Michigan between 1847 and 1856. Many of photographs were used as illustrations for the 1970 publication, The King Strang Story: A Vindication of James J. Strang, the Beaver Island Mormon King by Doyle C. Fitzpatrick. The materials are primarily copy prints. Mr. Fitzpatrick donated the materials to the State Archives in 1997. The collection is arranged according to these two series: 1. PHOTOGRAPHS, circa 1850 - 1960. .2 cu. ft. The photographs consist mainly of the photographs of Strang, family members and friends. There are also prints of maps, markers, and pamphlets. The photographs are mainly black and white, but there are a few in color. See the appendix for a brief description of the biographical photographs. Arranged alphabetically by subject. 2.    Extractions: The James Jesse Band (TJJB) is effectively on third of Canberra's recently defunct Catweasel. Vocalist James Jesse (aka Anthony Ives) is accompanied by Ross Edie on Piano (also previously of Catweasel). Assisting with this recent recording of the Canberra performed and written ballad, Cloud Buildings is recent returnee to the A.C.T music scene, guitarist Neil Freeman. Anthony Ives: Anthony developed his interest in singing whilst studying acting at the Sydney Actors Centre during 1995/1996.     Extractions: James Jesse Strang was born in New York State in 1813, where he became a member of the Baptist church at the age of twelve, and began study of the law at the age of twenty-one. Marrying his wife Mary, they moved with their three children to Chautauqua County New York, where he worked as a lawyer, Baptist Minister and the County Postmaster. With the loss of his Postmaster position in 1843, he moved his wife and three children to Wisconsin, and the following year again moved to Nauvoo Illinois. While in Nauvoo, Strang met and established a relationship with Joseph Smith, the founder of the fledgling Mormon Church, which was at the time headquartered in Nauvoo. Strang converts to Mormonism Impressed by Smiths rhetoric and ideals, Strang converted to the Mormon faith. Doubtless, Strang's admiration for Smith must have been mutual, since Strang was baptized within three months, and soon became appointed as an elder of the Church. Not long thereafter, Smith was jailed for destroying the office of a newspaper that had written criticizing articles about he and his Church. While in jail, Smith was assassinated, thereby leaving the Mormon Church without leadership.

    Extractions: JESSE JAMES Outlaw Young Jesse James learned a lot about guerrilla activities during the U.S. Civil War, fighting and sabotaging the Union army in the cause of the Confederacy. After the war, Jesse formed a gang of outlaws (including his brother Frank); in 1866 they began an on-again, off-again crime spree that lasted fifteen years. They robbed banks and trains, eluding law enforcement and gaining a popular following (and mythic stature), until James was betrayed and murdered by Bob Ford, one of his gang.
