His portrayal of Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars trilogy introduced him to a younger generation of filmgoers, but he was a legend in his own right long before taking up a lightsaber Sir Alec was an advertising copywriter before he turned to acting in the 1930s. He spent several years performing on the London stage prior to World War II; after the war, his film roles in Great Expectations (1946) and Oliver Twist (1948) for director David Lean launched his cinematic career. His reputation is sometimes overshadowed by that of the great triumvirate of Olivier, Gielgud and Richardson and it is true that his theatre work is slightly less distinguished than that of the big three, but when it comes to film acting, he far outstrips them. He was born illegitimate but his mother managed to send him to boarding school. From there he got a job as a copywriter, but always wanted to act. He enrolled at Fay Compson's studio until his money ran out and then started the long slog up the bill. He can be seen as an extra in Evensong , but apart from that he ignored the cinema. By the time war broke out he was a respected classical actor and had played Hamlet at the Old Vic. He saw war service with the Royal Navy and entered films properly with the small but memorable role of Herbert Pocket in Great Expectations . For the next fifteen years or so he was Britain's premier film actor. Other actors may have been bigger stars but he had the range to tackle a huge variety of roles and styles. When his golden period ended, he went back to the theatre and took small but significant parts in a variety of films. The most important of these films was Star Wars. His tiny percentage of the gross made him very rich and meant he didn't have to take any work he didn't fancy. His role as Smiley in two television adaptations of John Le Carre novels was also very well regarded.

    Extractions: 6 September 2000 Use this version to print Alec Guinness, the last of a breed of stage and screen British actors who were classically trained, broad in the scope of their repertoire, and literate, died on August 5, at the age of 86. This distinguished group included Laurence Olivier, John Gielgud, Ralph Richardson and Michael Redgrave. Gielgud himself died on April 14 of this year, at 96, and was acting into his last days. All of them were thoroughly professional, caring more about their art than about gossip or publicity. Needless to say, all were steeped in the dramatic classics and could perform any role from Shakespeare at a moment's notice. Guinness was physically unimpressive to the point of being nondescript. His features were soft and malleable, and he looked like the dull civil servants and tradesmen he often played. His voice was flat, bland and unassuming. But into this marvelous, transparent vessel Guinness poured an amazing variety of characterizations.
