Extractions: Updated November 14, 2002 My fascination with Dwight Frye really started with a literary character. In my What's At Stake In Vampirism? class, we were reading Bram Stoker's Dracula . The character of Renfield really caught my imagination. He was a tortured man constantly pulled between moments of educated lucidity and total raving madness. Most people just know him as the bug-eating guy. While reading Dracula , I got the urge to watch the Mel Brooks film Dracula: Dead and Loving It . I loved Peter McNichol's Renfield, and wondered where he got the inspiration. After some research, I found out about Dwight Frye's performance in the Tod Browning movie. Curious, I rented Tod Browning's version, even though I knew I'd be watching it in class less than a week later. I didn't care, I just had to see Dwight's Renfield. Although disappointed at pretty much everything else with the movie, I loved Dwight Frye. Even though his part had mostly been written for comic relief, he still managed to find the pathos that I had loved in the original novel. He also managed to drag in a whole lot of subtext. Yikes! And please God, may it be before I go screwy playing idiots, half-wits and lunatics on the talking screen!". Dwight Iliff Fry, an only child, was born in Salina, Kansas on February 22nd. 1899 after which his parents relocated to Denver, Colorado. As a youngster Dwight was given voice training and piano lessons, showing perhaps a promising career as an accomplished pianist. Despite this, his attentions were drawn more towards the stage, attending numerous performances of travelling stock companies passing through town. After a brief stint as a secretary in a local business firm, Dwight enrolled into college, but this was shortlived when he was offered a position with the Denver stock company headed by O.D. Woodward. Much to his parents' chagrin the company moved to Washington and Dwight toured extensively for two years progressing into bigger and better roles. At this time Dwight added an "e" to his surname. He attempted to try his luck in New York where he landed a bit part in a vaudeville act called

Extractions: Back to front page Dwight Iliff Frye A versatile character actor, originator of several memorable characterizations in the horror film genre. Dwight Frye had a notable theatre career, moving from juvenile parts to leads before entering film. He originated the part of "the Young Man" in the 1922 Broadway premiere of Luigi Pirandello's "Six Characters in Search of an Author." Cast with Bela Lugosi in a 1926 production of "The Devil and the Cheese, " he ultimately appeared in at least two Lugosi films. Despite (or perhaps because of) his memorable, impassioned portrayals of real estate agent-cum-madman Renfield in Tod Browning's 1931 film "Dracula, " and Fritz the sadistic hunchbacked lab assistant in James Whale's "Frankenstein, " the Industry seemed determined to typecast him. "The Crime of Dr. Crespi" (1935) offered him billing second only to that of villain Erich von Stroheim but too soon he was consigned to playing a lucklustre array of lunatics, spies, red herrings, grasping heirs, and bit parts. He occasionally returned to the stage in comedies, musicals, and thrillers such as "Night Must Fall" and a stage version of "Dracula." In the early '40's he worked nights (between films and local theatre productions) as a tool desginer for the Lockheed Aircraft Company. An uncanny physical resemblance to then-Secretary of War Newton D.Baker led to being signed to a substantial role in a film called "Wilson", based on the life of U.S. President Woodrow Wilson, but Frye succumbed to a heart attack on a bus a few days later.
