All I knew about Stewart Finlay-McLennan before speaking with him was that he had been with the original Christy series since day one and that his steady presence helped other cast members feel better about another actress taking over for the ER -whacked Kellie Martin. According to the show's producer, Tom Blomquist, " MacNeill is one of the most richly drawn and complicated characters in Catherine Marshall's novel. Stewart didn't simply play the role, he defined it. It was amazing to watch him develop Neil's many layers throughout the original series and now the Pax movies. Both versions of "Christy" benefited from his extraordinary acting range. A couple of months ago, Stewart rushed to his L.A. apartment in order to get ready for an afternoon reading for Richard Dreyfuss' new CBS series, "The Education Of Max Bickford". After noticing that he had nothing clean to wear, he washed his clothes and headed to the dryer. Unfortunately for him, the dryer broke. Since there was not enough time to buy anything to wear for the audition, he slipped on wet, dark jeans, a damp black shirt and headed out to meet Mr. Dreyfuss. So how did Stewart's time with the legendary Oscar-winner go? First, he sat in the Dreyfuss chair, getting it wet for the real deal's own personal enjoyment. Then he spent the rest of his time worrying that the next actor to sit in his audition chair would think that the "crazy Australian was so nervous he wet his pants".

From that novel came a short-lived television series which left CBS after only 21 episodes, but has been seen in reruns continuously ever since. Extractions: Tell us about your first meeting. What did you learn about each other then and how did you feel? LAUREN: The first time we met was at the network when they wanted to see how we looked together. Randall Batinkoff was also invited but was out of town doing "Touched By An Angel" and had not yet decided if he wanted to return as David. I was extremely nervous because I was not only reading for Jeff Sagansky, but I was doing a scene with the original Doctor MacNeill. As it turned out, Stewart was just as nervous as I was and we now joke about it because neither of us were acting like ourselves. There we were, total strangers, reading the passionate "I'm not a monk" scene in an office filled with producers and executives. It was really uncomfortable. The next time I saw Stewart was at the script read-through in Vancouver many weeks later, and we both had a good laugh and apologized for our strange behavior. STEWART: We were both under tremendous pressure at that meeting. In reality, the whole thing was mostly a blur to me. We were asked to do a reading together. We did the scene, and I knew that reading was really important. I knew basically for me that the job was at stake, and I felt it was going to come down to those two minutes of that reading. But once I was in Mac, I was fine and it was over before I knew it, but it was a very hard thing to do for both of us I feel. I do know that we were both happy that it was all over. I think she said to me she finally got to do the scene with the person she felt like she should be doing it with. While doing the scene with her, I felt good about the experience because I knew there was someone on the other side of the room who could do this with me. Lauren did just fine. I felt an energy coming out of her. I was hopeful on many levels as I sensed that she definitely had the ability to play this character, and if I did get this job back that was important to me to know that. It was a very small opportunity for me to get to know her, but really what I saw at that meeting wasn't the Lauren I grew to know and love in Canada. We were both too traumatized at that moment.
Extractions: Lauren, do you think the difference in MacNeill's and Christy's ages ever comes into play in their relationship? LAUREN: No, it doesn't. Christy has had many issues with Neil, but I don't believe that age ever came into it. What about you personally, Lauren, would you at 20 have a relationship with a guy 15-20 years older than you? Why or why not? LAUREN: I think I would. Love is not age-based. It's based on your heart and who you both are as people. If I met someone who connected with me on those levels I can't imagine caring about his age or mine. Who do you feel is more of a romantic at heart, Christy or MacNeill? How would you answer this question if I had asked this about you compared to Stewart instead of Christy compared to MacNeill? LAUREN: Christy is probably more romantic than Neil. And I'm most certainly more romantic than any man I've met to date. I have no way of knowing how romantic Stewart might be... but who knows? What do you think is so appealing about MacNeill to Christy? What about to you, Lauren?
