Extractions: At its inception, Belly consisted of Tanya at the forefront with the Gorman brothers, Chris and Tom. The first album, "Star," was released to critical acclaim. "Feed the Tree" the first single received significant airplay as well as regular rotation on MTV. The effort garnered a gold record and a Grammy nomination for "Best New Group" that year. Gail Greenwood was added on bass to complete the gender balance in the group. The band had an amicable split following their second effort, "King." Perhaps expectations were unreasonably high following the unexpected success of their debut. Tanya reacted, "At first, it made me really sad. But, on the other hand, everybody wanted to start doing different things. That whole 'musical differences' thing sounds like such a crap blanket to throw over everything, but music is kinetic, and trying to force it into a box that isn't working is counterproductive for everybody." Thus began her career as a solo artist. September 9th, 1997 saw the release of the first Tanya Donelly solo record, "Lovesongs for Underdogs." Donelly called upon the talents of old friends from the Boston music scene. David Narcizo, Throwing Muses drummer and ex-Pixies drummer David Lovering contributed their talents, as did guitarist Rich Gilbert, formerly of Human Sexual Response. The album was co-produced by Tanya and Wally Gagel, whose past credits include Folk Implosion's "Natural One." Tanya commented, "Making the record was a great experience, it was great to finally be free of my musical monogamy. I brought people in according to who I wanted to play what. I couldn't deal with her in Throwing Muses, I wanted to kill Belly, and even her string-work got to me on the Breeders' delicious debut, Pod , annoyed me (just 'cause it was her). Now, I feel stupid, because you know what? Sliding and Diving is incredible. Easily the best four song EP in existence, you can't resist the sudden kick of "Bum," a song whose wind-tunnel rock and roll surpasses Sinead O'Connor in balls and Tori Amos in venom. The song's abrupt halt leaves you dizzy, but brings you down perfectly for the next track, a Patsy Cline- Jewel Kilcher hybrid called "Restless," in which the laidback, western slide-guitar dazes you just enough to be slightly damaged by lyrics like, "You hold my hand like it's a razor." The truly awesome doesn't occur until the very end, though, with the incredible "Swoon," a song that combines all the previous elements in a moment of pure honesty that breaks your heart and cuts your jugular. On the down side, four songs is certainly not enough. Fortunately

The album's first single, "The Storm," may be her best ever vocal performance: the lines unfold like a bridge spanning a river. Majestic yet varied, she can sound so real a stark jolt, a breathy pause that the high points become that much more angelic. And she still writes those weird but powerful lyrics: "You have carbonated my bloodstream" is freakishly romantic, followed by the strength in vulnerability of "when I stumble, it will be under your spell" the chorus then yielding to a stretched note that drifts like clouds on a cold Halloween night. There is a band on this album, but it's just an expensive, perfect frame that you put around the picture it's best when least noticed. And that's one of the problems with Beautysleep . Five years have passed since Donelly's last album the poppier but less consistent Lovesongs for Underdogs and she has put down her guitar for now, leaving almost all axe duties to her husband Dean Fisher. Fisher and the others are like studio session players for a country singer: simpatico but anonymous. There are nice touches to the album's sound, like the perfectly moody organ on "Life Is But a Dream." But I had to look at the liner notes to find out that the deep voice shadowing "Moonbeam Monkey" belongs to the late, great Mark Sandman from Morphine. This duet between Boston's greatest high and low voices is a milestone, but it would be nice if Sandman were easier to hear.
