Dressed as an Edwardian cricket er with a fresh slice of celery attached to his lapel, his slightly lost and breathless portrayal was a refreshing change from the in-your-face m anner of his predecessor. Season 19 also saw the show leave its traditional Saturday tea-time slot for the first time and move to a new twice-wee kly evening broadcast. The Mara, the Terileptils and the Tractators were some of the main monsters featured during Peter Davison's three years in the role, which also s aw the show's 'history' being retread as Season 20 featured an old enemy in each story to celebrate this milestone for the series. Also celebrati ng the show's 20th Anniversary was a specially commissioned 90-minute special, ' The Five Doctors ', which saw the first five incarnations of the Doctor joining f orces to battle against Daleks, Cybermen, Yeti and the Master on his home world of Gallifrey.

    Extractions: Watch the Fifth Doctor in action in 'Black Orchid' After seven years enjoying adventures in his fourth persona, it was the latest in a line of battles against the Master that caused the Doctor to fall from the gantry of a radio telescope. This fall had been predicted, however, and, to the astonishment of his companions, the Doctor merged with a mysterious being known only as 'the Watcher', the result being another incarnation. The fifth Doctor was much younger in appearance than any of his predecessors, and had a boyish charm and endearing air of innocence. However his looks belied his intelligence which was put to good use in working out just how to defeat foes as diverse as the burrowing Tractators and the devious Black Guardian. The Doctor liked to rush headlong into action, often breathless with excitement, and his whirlwind enthusiasm affected those around him, particularly the Australian trainee air-stewardess Tegan, Nyssa, the young girl from Traken, and the Alzarian youth Adric. As this Doctor appeared younger than the others, he often took on a more 'elder brother' role with his companions as opposed to the father figure of earlier incarnations.

    Extractions: Former All Creatures Great and Small star Peter Davison brought his boyish charm to the role when he became the youngest actor to play the Doctor in 1982. Thankfully he didn’t have to do strange things to cows during his time on the show. Adopting the costume of an Edwardian cricketer, Davison’s Doctor was as adept at saving the day with a cricket ball as he was with his sonic screwdriver. In contrast to the overpowering presence of Tom Baker, Peter’s Doctor was a far softer characterisation. The show broke away from its traditional Saturday teatime slot during Davison’s three year tenure, finding a new home in a twice-weekly midweek slot. A highlight was a reunion with his predecessors in the 20th Anniversary tale, The Five Doctors. To mark the anniversary, a massive BBC convention was held at Longleat House in Wiltshire. Thousands of fans descended upon the venue to meet their heroes and wallow in more mud than Glastonbury. A waxwork of Tom Baker turned up too.

If a poem you're struggling with doesn't conclude properly, said the late Richard Hugo, look a few lines before the end for the trouble: trouble is seldom located where you think. So it is that "finding time to write" is seldom what keeps writing from getting done. In nearly half a century as an editor I have been hearing complaints from writers about the difficulty of finding time to writeespecially as the deadlines for their book contracts approached. Those in the teaching profession were particularly vociferous. I have taught very little, but in the course of a lifetime of meeting deadlinesthose set by myself and those set by othersit has seemed to me that the difficulty comes not at the end of the writing task but at the outset, in the middle, and every day. What's not begun will never end. I did not begin this piece of writing in order to scold. Time lies all around us, when beepers and e-mail and paper memoranda demand instant replies. I do not for a moment minimize the difficulties that the Information Age thrusts upon us: the requirement to hold oneself alert and available at all hours, the expectation of always being on stage. Yet the great writers we admire have somehow, whether they be Balzac or Proust, always beat their deadlines when the word called. In his late sixties today, John Updike seems to have no difficulty "finding" the time to write poems and novels, to say nothing of some little thing a couple of times a month for The New Yorker or the New York Review of Books or the New York Times Book Review or for some local pageant or charitable purpose. Writers like Updike write because it's what they do.

In his best poems, Davison meditates on the vagaries of old age: the failing body, the ever-present past, the awareness of death. His poems are often self-referential, with the poet making the reader aware of the poem stumbling down its own path. This tendency could become tiresome in a poet less adept at surprising the reader with interesting turns. “Confederate,” one of the best poems in the collection, addresses the poet’s other self, the pragmatic personality that prices binoculars while the poet squints at birds. The struggle between the romantic and practical aspects of himself is never resolved; rather the two personalities continue to live side by side, never forgiving each other.
