However exciting the arrival of a new member of the family may have been, Davison capped off his day at the hospital with his partner, actress and playwright Elizabeth Morton, by apprehending and making a citizen's arrest of an armed robber in his Belsize Park neighborhood. The 15-year-old bandit had taken the video camera that still had the tape of the birth in it out of Davison's car, parked near his home. Davison gave chase on foot and by car, and caught the teen. No doubt, all those corridors he ran down as Doctor Who helped. "He was flailing about with what I thought was a knife for quite a bit but I looked down and couldn't see any blood so I just wrestled him to the floor and basically sat on him for 10 minutes," Davison said. "He said he'd give the video camera back - it was then I realised the pictures from all day at the hospital were on it," he said.

Extractions: Born in New York City in 1928, Davison is the son of the English poet Edward Davison, who had emigrated to the United States a few years earlier, and who had a long career as a teacher, initially at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where Davison was raised. Educated at Harvard and at Cambridge University in England, Davison became an editor at Harcourt, Brace at the age of twenty-two, moving to Boston in 1955 to work at Harvard University Press and then the Atlantic Monthly Press, where he remained for the next twenty-nine years, latterly as its editor-in-chief and director. He edited books for his own imprint at Houghtin Mifflin from 1985 to 1998.
