Davison was absolutely superb in the role. He brought to the Doctor a combination of the innocence of youth and the wisdom of old age, and played the part with absolute conviction throughout. If there is a fault with Davison's Doctor, it lies not with the actor but with the production regime throughout the eighties, which tended to concentrate on glossy production values at the expense of decent story telling. The producer also didn't understand what made Doctor Who so popular, and as with the final year of Tom Baker's tenure, most of the humour was removed from the series. That's not to say that the programme went bad overnight - indeed, there were many excellent stories during this period. Also, the new format proved initially popular, and audience ratings were quite high, but they tailed off somewhat during Davison's run. It has been speculated that the audience figures were inflated at first by new viewers who were fans of Davison rather than of Doctor Who itself. It is probably significant that Davison's episodes coincided with the series being moved from its traditional Saturday teatime programming slot, which I believe may have contributed to it losing much of its most important audience - children. A weekday early evening timeslot was perhaps not the ideal time to pick up and inspire a new generation of children, what with school the next day, homework to do, and so on. In retrospect, we can probably see this as the beginning of the end for

Peter was apprehensive at first about accepting the role as he thought he was to young to play character. This was in his mind as he had been a viewer of the series since it was first broadcast. He did accept after thinking it over with his then wife Sandra Dickinson.

The breath of a unified consciousness is found in the youthful insistence that begins Davison's book. There is also a curious poem in the forward that reads like an amendment for posterior. It would have been apropos, if less relevant, even as an afterward. The first hint of the universal present in everything occurs right from the outset (and ending). In the first poem, "No Escape," the lines "encountering possibility just as it / flowers into the actual" is to echo throughout the work as if giving birth. The process of procreation is made more prominent by noting that "No Escape" is also the last work in the book. So with "No Escape" Davison reveals that, despite the fact that there are more beginnings than endings, there is no escaping endings. After all, man has not become extinct, yet. Baker had played the role of the Doctor for seven years prior. Mr. Davison's Doctor wore a cricket sweater, striped pants, a frock coat, a panama hat, and a stick of celery on his lapel. He needed glasses to read, being shortsighted in his right eye, and had a love for cricket that compared to no other incarnation. Since Mr. Davison was following Tom Baker's goofy yet wise Doctor, he had to create a different persona for the fifth incarnation of the Time Lord. Counterpointing the worn wisdom of the Fourth Doctor, the Fifth was young, energetic, and at times seemed as fallible as any human. That fact alone set the fifth apart from any other incarnation up to that point and beyond it. The insatiable curiosity, that usually landed the Time Lord into trouble, went on as steady as the beating of his twin hearts. Mr. Davison gave his Doctor much of the arrogance and tetchiness of William Hartnell's (the First Doctor), some of the classiness of Jon Pertwee's (the Third Doctor), and threw in some of his own elements, such as insatiable curiousity, a soft spot for Earth and its people, and the aforementioned passion for cricket.

Here's a sample from a 1970s poem called "The Dreamers": a man with his eyes shut swam upward Merwin's work has followed his life. Born seventy years ago in Union City, New Jersey, he was raised first in a Presbyterian rectory looking across the Hudson toward the towers of New York and then later in Scranton, Pennsylvania. He graduated in 1947 from Princeton University, where he learned from John Berryman, and set out for Europe to encounter the Romance languages.
