Bette created a sensation as the cockney waitress who ruins a man's life, and when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences failed to nominate her for a Best Actress Oscar, the public outcry prompted the organization to permit write-in votes that year. (The award finally went to Claudette Colbert for IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT, which swept the Oscars that year.) Although Bette didn't win for OF HUMAN BONDAGE, she did receive her first official Oscar nomination the following year for her role as jinxed actress Joyce Heath in DANGEROUS (1935). This time Bette won the Oscar, but she always regarded it as a consolation prize for her performance the previous year, and thought the 1935 prize should have gone to Katharine Hepburn for ALICE ADAMS.

    Extractions: It would be impossible for me to write an All About Bette in the small amount of space that is provided here. Time and again the question has been asked, who is the greatest actress to ever appear onscreen? The answer seems to sway between Katharine Hepburn and Bette Davis, with a slight edge given to Hepburn. A pity the two actresses never worked together, but in truth, Hepburn was far above Davis, if not as an actress than as a celebrity, and after the early 1940's Davis' comeback never took took, despite All About Eve and Whatever happened to Baby Jane Davis was spotted on Broadway by a Universal talent scout, and signed almost immediately to a contract. She was not a success at Univeersal, but Warners picked her up, and in 1934 she got a breakthrough as Mildred in Of Human Bondage . In 1935 she took home the Best Actress Oscar for her role in Dangerous , three years later she recieved her second Oscar for Jezebel Davis in Dark Victory Even her costars seemed affected by it. Many of them gave their best performances opposite Bette, as though that glow she eminated rubbed off on them and improved or brought out the best in their work. She would never allow anyone to steal a film, but she was generous to her supporting cast, more generous than any other lead performer was. And so Geraldine Fitzgerald, Celest Holme, Fay Bainter, George Brent, Franchot Tone, George Sanders, and Victor Buono all look far more talented and gifted than they actually were, because they played opposite her at one time.
