David Rodger musdr@lure.latrobe.edu.au david Rodger's home page growth in the number of 'multimedia'or 'crossart' works A violinist has a fairly fixed set of gestures to http://farben.latrobe.edu.au/mikropol/volume2/rodger-d/rodger.html
Extractions: David Rodger's home page Can interactive music and art works fit into a taxonomy of style and content such that the term 'tradition' is meaningful in discussions about their performance? To what extent do such works proceed from a received performance practice? Contemporary musicology is, more and more, embracing the assessment of current musical practices, including those of popular music forms. But electronic music technology has received less attention, perhaps because there has been a tendency to treat technology and its associated practices more as a cultural manifestation-technology as fetish-than as a mode of production requiring its own "codes of performance". The fledgling field of 'cyberart' seems in particular to have suffered. It seems as if we have not gotten over the "gee-whiz"-ness of it all! In such works, there may be no score (other than custom software) and there may appear to be no performer as an embodied presence. In addition, recent technologies allow the artist to extend the capabilities of the instrumental object through remote control, or to dispense with the object altogether. I see three main problems associated with classifying electronic performing arts. The first is that the actuating technology which captures physical gesture as a control signal may be uncommonly used in musical applications. Secondly, the way that signal is used is often specific to the work. Finally, interactive systems depart from well-established organological schemata, such as the Hornbostel-Sachs system. Bakan et.al. (1990) have attempted to extend this classification to include electronic music instruments, but they are mainly concerned with those modelled on traditional instruments like keyboards and woodwind mechanisms or with 'music processors' which record, reproduce and manipulate data. So it becomes more difficult to place the work in any 'tradition' of performance practice or instrument design than it is to situate a Mozart string quartet into a tradition of chamber music or a survey of string instrument techniques.

The Onion A.V. Club | Mr. Show The Onion AV Club interviews Bob Odenkirk and david cross about the sketchcomedy series. http://www.theavclub.com/avclub3409/bonusfeature13409.html
Extractions: By Stephen Thompson Every year around this time, The Onion talks to Bob Odenkirk and David Cross, the stars and masterminds behind HBO's brilliant Mr. Show , a 30-minute, intricately constructed, satirical sketch-comedy series that's funnier than anything else on TV. The first new episode of the fall season premieres Oct. 26, but in the meantime, the network will air hour-long best-of shows Oct. 5, Oct. 8, Oct. 14, and Oct. 20. Even better, HBO will soon air the complete Mr. Show catalog in five-hour blocks: The first 10 episodes air Oct. 9, and the second 10 air Oct. 16. If you haven't seen it, and have access to HBO, don't miss it. The Onion: When last we spoke, about a year ago, Bob referred to your workload as "a hellish fucking bitch." Is the same true this year? David Cross: No. It's difficult now, and difficult in the home stretch, but it's not nearly as bad as it was last year. Bob Odenkirk: It's a different kind of hell, in a way. We felt that last year's 10th show was not a good show. And with all the pressure coming down on us now, and all the different kinds of work we have to do at this point in our schedule... We're writing, we're rewriting, we're shooting already, we're editing... Everything piles up. We don't want that last show to be the same thing last year's show was, where it was just us barely groaning it out. You can't do that to yourself too many times, where you just beat the shit out of your body for months. I've got to be really careful, because I got really sick a few weeks ago, and it was just from being run-down. Plus, my wife is pregnant. We're going to have a baby as soon as the season's over.

Meditations On The Stations Of The Cross A site with personal meditations on the fourteen Stations of the cross, by E. david Clifton. With artwork chosen for each station, or a graphics light version, your choice. http://www.w-link.net/~edavid/home.html
Extractions: Called also the Via Crucis, Via Dolorosa or the Way of the Cross, the Stations of the Cross are an old devotion that have been used to instill contemplation of the Passion of Jesus Christ. The Franciscans of St. Francis of Assisi have been credited with bringing the Stations to popularity. To find out more of the Stations you can visit New Advent's page on the subject from the Catholic Encyclopedia. Not all the Stations are expressly biblical. Although, Jesus' standing before Pilate, His crucifixion, death, and entombment are clearly referenced in the Evangiles. Others such as Jesus falling find no biblical statement and perhaps came about as human inference both on Our Lord's suffering and our daily struggles and failures. Still other Stations such as Simon of Cyrene carrying the cross and Jesus speaking to the women are found in some gospel accounts and not others. Jesus being stripped from his garments is an example of a station arising from deduction because the Evangiles mention Jesus' clothes being divided among the soldiers who crucified him but do not specifically mention how they got those clothes. Does this lack of strict biblical reference weaken the devotion? To me, no, since this devotion achieves many great benefits by encouraging the contemplation of the mysteries of Christ's suffering and death; two mysteries that make possible redemption and ultimate unity with God. The devotion also reflects the power and sanctity of tradition. Even though tradition may be a point of contention with many, it should be noted that the chapter and verse demarkations of the Bible are themselves evidence of universally accepted tradition. To find out how the chapters and verses in the Bible came about check out this page

Plop. Plop. Plop. Silence enveloped the inky darkness o f Silva Hall. Then pandemonium erupted as 2,000 listeners stood and cheered for Tan's thrilling religious drama, a retelling of the passion story of Christ. The work for chorus, water-percussion instruments and strings combines chant, electronic sampling, liquid percussion effects and high vocal drama in a series of ritualistic scenes that create an immediate and visceral effect on the listener. For the 32-year-old Oregon Bach Festival, "Water Passion" is not only the summer sensation, it is also the kind of adrenaline jolt that keeps this festival among the liveliest in the country.
