UAs chief Arthur Krim eventually allocated a meagre $1 million budget for Doctor No, the first in a series of at least three, and the search for James Bond begun. Initially director Terence Young approached Cary Grant, but he was only willing to star in one, and the next choice James Mason would only do two, so they were forced to look for a new star. Of the five who were given screen-tests, by far the best was Sean Connery. Thomas Sean Connery was born on August 25 th 1930 in Edinburgh, and was brought up in a life of poverty. After leaving school aged 13 he had many jobs, including milkman, coffin-polisher, and builder, and in between he served for three years in the navy. In 1950 Connery was in London to represent Scotland in a Mr Universe contest, when a fellow-competitor suggested he auditioned for the chorus in South Pacific. Earning $35 a week, Connery said his head turned at all that easy money and he decided to turn down an offer of becoming a professional footballer in order to pursue a career in showbusiness. Connerys lucky break was getting the lead role in the BBC programme Requiem For A Heavyweight. He put in an excellent performance, and more TV roles followed before he was suggested for the movie No Road Back which led to several other important roles. In 1957 he signed a contract with 20

In 1963 he starred as James Bond in Dr. No , and by 1971 he had appeared in five more Bond movies. His screen image changed during the 1970s, thanks to movies such as the 1975 adventures The Wind and the Lion (with Candice Bergen) and The Man Who Would Be King (with Michael Caine ). Connery has had many jobs including: a tough laborer, chorus boy, lifeguard and even as a nude model for art classes. Once leaving school Sean Connery spent much of his time at libraries and traveled about preforming in plays. He got roles in stage productions including "Anna Christie", "Anna Karenina", and Arthur Miller's, "The Crucible". He had his first TV appearence in 1956, and signed a movie contract with MGM in the late 1950's, which led to a string of film roles.

Tesche also gives some insight into the actor's private life and in his relation to politics - Connery fights for Scottish independence. Thomas (Sean) Connery was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1930, as the son of a truck driver whose ancestors had come from Ireland. In the street in which the Connery's lived, there was no hot water. At the age of nine, Sean began to deliver milk before he went to school. In 1944, Sean quit school in order to work in a dairy on a regular basis. In an interview in 1999, he said about his experiences with women as a milkman that shortly after the war, when men were still away from home, it had been very interesting. In 1946, he enrolled himself in the Navy for twelve years because he wanted to see the world. But he was only on duty in huts in Portsmouth. After three years of service, he was discharged with a stomach ulcer and received a small pension.
