Extractions: Review by Olli Haaskivi The touring version of Chicago stopped in Ft. Lauderdale. The tour starred Belle Calaway, Donna Marie Asbury and Robert Urich. Note: After the Ft. Lauderdale stop, Nana Visitor (of Star Trek fame), Vicki Lewis ( Damn Yankees and Newsradio ) will be playing the roles of Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly on tour, for the Detroit and Washington DC stops. After they leave the tour and go to Las Vegas, my guess is Calaway and Asbury will take over the roles. I saw the tour twice in Ft. Lauderdale, on Friday night November 12 and then Saturday afternoon November 13. I liked Saturday more (not really performance wise, probably just because what happened before and after) so I'll write about Saturday. Prior to the show, I got my comfortable clothes on and took the cab to the Broward Center to wait in the box office line for cancellations. I got third row left seats. WONDERFUL Seats!! In the line, I met Michelle Bruckner (Sheila in the most recent tour of A Chorus Line ), who would be performing the role of Liz that afternoon. She was getting tickets for her friends, and we talked for a while. She is very nice and approachable, not to mention a wonderful dancer. My friend and I shouted and hollered for Michelle and the rest of the performers after each of the numbers. Understandably so, this performance was simply wonderful.

Texas. He married Elizabeth A. Campbell, daughter of Obadiah C. Campbell and Anna Elizabeth Patterson, about 1854 in Gordon Co. Georgia. Elizabeth was born August 13, 1831 in Abbeville, S. Carolina and died October 18, 1870 in Sonoraville, Gordon Co. Georgia. She is buried in Tate Cemetery, Gordon Co. Georgia. Evan is buried in Tate Cemetery, Tate Springs, Tarrant Co. Texas. Evan joined the Confederate Army in Gordon Co. Georgia on March 4, 1861. He was captured by the Union soldiers on July 4, 1863 at the battle of Vicksburg, in Mississippi. At that time he was a Sgt. in Co. D, 40th Regt. Georgia Infantry. He was later paroled back to his company. He was captured again, in Georgia, probably at the Battle of Resaca, just a few miles from his home. He was sent to a military prison in Louisville, Kentucky. Here, he signed an oath of allegiance to the United States. He was sent north of the Ohio River, where he was required to remain for the duration of the war. After the unexpected death of his wife, Elizabeth, Evan took his children and moved to Texas. They left Georgia in late 1870 and traveled by wagon train to an area just southeast of Ft. Worth, near the small town of Hadley. Accompanying Evan on this trip was his cousin, David Gilbert Tate and his wife, Martha. Captain John Penn was the organizer of the train. Once in Texas, Evan purchased land for farming. On this land was a natural spring. The area became know as, first, Tate's Spring and then later, Tate Springs.

Several Accidentals went together to see her in the play, and were knocked out by her performance. But don't take our word for it. Listen to reviewer Steve Callahan, who wrote, "Belle Calaway plays Roxie, and she delivers the goods. Cute, sexy, energetic, she's perfect for the role." Gary Kilmer, Belle Calaway and Jack Hayes in the Tony-Award Winning Broadway Musical CHICAGO. Photo: Carol Rosegg Belle played Roxy Har t in the show. CHICAGO tells the story of Roxy, a chorus girl who murders her lover, invents her defense, and then manipulates the media to become a celebrity. Her lawyer, Billy Flynn, creates a "Razzle Dazzle" trial that raises Roxy to stardom. Belle is also incredibly funny offstage, and tells great stories about her Broadway experiences...maybe one or two of those will show up here...

CityBeat - Onstage Long Jump belle calaway has understudied her way to the top INTERVIEW BY RICKPENDER I started dancing when I was very little, recalls belle calaway http://www.citybeat.com/archives/1998/issue505/onstagearticle1.html
Extractions: "I started dancing when I was very little," recalls Belle Calaway, currently touring as Roxie Hart in Chicago. Her mom wanted to dance and couldn't, so Belle - at age 3 - began ballet lessons. As a teenager in southern California, she was still dancing, but she had athletic aspirations, too. "For a while in school, it was, am I gonna be a dancer or am I gonna train for the Olympics? I wanted to be a long jumper," she told CityBeat in a recent phone interview. But she took a detour through parenthood and became neither, at least not immediately. She found herself a single mom, age 24 with no professional theater experience. "I couldn't be starting a career with a child to raise. I ended up waiting tables and working in factories for 12 years." But the pull of the theater remained strong, and Calaway began to dabble in community theater, as she had in high school. "I could wait tables in the daytime and go do a show at night. The next thing I knew I was in my 30s, auditioning for theater where they were giving me the leads in this and that and the other. I'd come to a mature level where I looked like a leading lady, not a kid anymore. Pretty soon I was making more money in the theater than I could waiting tables." Calaway went to more auditions. She responded to an open call in Los Angeles and was selected for the road company of the musical Woman of the Year. "I got into the ensemble, showed up the first day and they said, 'You're the understudy.' " That would be for legendary actress Lauren Bacall.

Extractions: Left to right, Gary Kilmer, Belle Calaway and Jack Heyes in the six time Tony-Award winning musical CHICAGO playing through Apr. 18 in Sacramento. Photo by Carol Rosegg After stopping in Sacramento just last year, the National Tour of CHICAGO made a return visit April 13-18, 1999 in the next-to-last offering in this season's Broadway Series. Winner of six Tony Awards, CHICAGO is set in the late 1920s and the story revolves around Roxie Hart (played this year by Belle Calaway), a singer who murders her lover after he threatens to leave her. Amos (Bruce Winant), Roxie's loving, but not-too-bright husband confesses to the crime, but there are so many holes in his story, the truth finally comes out and Roxie admits that she is the killer. Roxie goes to jail where she finds herself awaiting trial and in the middle of a media circus as the newspaper and radio reporters switch their attention between whoever has the most sensational story at the moment. This week it's Roxie - last week it was Roxie's fellow jailbird, Velma Kelly (Deidre Goodwin). Both have enlisted a charming, smart, and media savvy lawyer - Billy Flynn (Adrian Zmed). For $5,000, Flynn can get almost anyone off - no matter what the charge. He loves the limelight, however, and goes for whichever case catches the fancy of the media and public at the moment.
