By Michael McGuff You might not believe by watching him on General Hospital, but Chad Brannon's roles haven't always been as wild as his current role of Zander. "I was the nerd." Brannon took on the role in Tomball High School's production of "The Nerd" by Larry Shue. The very driven actor says the opportunity sparked an interest in acting that still burns inside him today. "It was electric, having an audience that is in essence in the palm of your hand for two hours. It was something I hadn't experienced before, I knew it was something I was destined to do," Brannon said from his dressing room in L.A. This feeling lead the future soap star to Sam Houston State University in Huntsville where he majored in theater. "I found my focus before, college just distracted me," Brannon said.

Seeing Luis Alcazar's body flying down fourteen floors and landing with a thud on the parked car below made me realize General Hospital was losing a darn good bad guy and a very talented actor. Ted King had succeeded in making his character one that many loved to hate but also one that will be missed. Alcazar had been a strong rival to two of the main protagonist males of GH - Sonny Corinthos and Jasper Jax - and had been a force to be taken seriously largely thanks to Ted King's talented acting choices. Luis Alcazar could be decisively cruel yet King allowed the audience to think we saw a vulnerability behind Alcazar's cold eyes. The audience never forgot that Alcazar was bad but Ted King on occasion gave us deeper glimpses into Alcazar's love/obsession with Brenda and the idea that Alcazar wasn't all evil...perhaps he even truly loved Brenda (remember the single tear that he shed because of Brenda).

Ted King, whose character of "Luis Alcazar" was killed off GH last week, will be seen throughout January, in flashbacks where just about everyone in Port Charles will be under suspicion for the crime. With the opening of the ABC Soap Opera Bistro at Disney's California Adventure, I hoped that my longing for a West Coast version of the Super Soap event would take place. I'm still waiting! Fortunately, ABC has decided to finally let some real, actual Soap Stars loose amongst the food and fans at the restaurant. It was announced last month that for four experimental Fridays during August, the Bistro would host some of ABC's most popular Soap stars from the West Coast ABC Soaps, General Hospital and Port Charles. Both shows, oddly, are set in New York.

Extractions: All in the Family Though he is now firmly ensconced in California playing GH bad boy, Zander Smith, Chad Brannon is originally from Texas. "My parents divorced when I was six. I was the only original. And then they both re-married a month apart." But unlike many families in this situation, Brannon says that all parties got along really well: "We used to go out on the boat together." Of course, there can be a flip side to family harmony. What happens when you do something wrong? Brannon notes, "It was horrible because when I got in trouble they would have what they called the 'quad-meetings.' They would all get together and I would come home after having done something bad in high school or whatever, and they would all be there and I would be like, 'Oh, crap! Here we go.' They made sure that any house I went to, I was in trouble." Home wasn't the only place where the actor found himself in trouble. "I was the class clown," he chuckles. "In first grade, my parents came down for parent night and I said, 'We're going to see my desk?' We walked over, and my desk was off in a corner. My stepdad goes, 'Chad, why are you sitting over there?' I said, 'Oh I don't know, this is my desk!' Because I was always rambunctious and always causing problems so they just kind of shuttled me off to the side." Well, being shuttled off to the side is a thing of the past for the actor. Recently, the show has brought on his character's father, Cameron (Lane Davies) and fleshed out some events from his past. Chad Brannon is now front and center.
