Aux 26 astronautes que comptait la NASA en 1978 (17 novices et 9 vétérans d' Apollo), sont venu s' ajouter 35 astronautes en 1978 (dont 6 femmes), 19 en 1980 (dont 2 femmes), 17 en 1984 (dont trois femmes), 13 en 1985 (dont 3 femmes), 15 en 1987 (dont deux femmes), 23 en 1990 (dont cinq femmes), 19 en 1992 (dont trois femmes), 19 en 1995 (dont 5 femmes), 34 en 1996 (dont huit femmes), 25 en 1998 (dont quatre femmes) auxquels s' ajoute le contingent européen (quatre astronautes) , un canadien et un brésilien et 17 en juillet dernier (dont trois femmes). Beaucoup sont partis entre temps de l' agence, quelques uns sont morts, soit en mission soit pendant l' entraînement.
