The son of working-class parentshis father was a toolfitter and his mother was a welderhe earned a scholarship to Tetten Hall College, a boy's private school where, at age 11, he was intrigued by the notion of performing after playing an Egyptian citizen in a production of Shaw's Caesar and Cleopatra. After studying theatre and history at the University of Wales, he earned his Equity card by working for an innovative Welsh Educational Authority program that saw him teach and act in schools throughout the country. After several years with this "mobile theatre," followed by a stint in repertory and an Italian tour (playing Riffraff) in The Rocky Horror Show, he and his then-wife, a Canadian actress, moved to Toronto in 1987. When not not a film or TV set, Bennett lives in a log cabin near Lindsay, Ont., on a woodland farm large enough, at 44 acres, to safely practise one of his hobbies: archery. He also likes to fish and golf (during a break in Ireland, where Isaac Newton was filmed, he got to play at Druid's Glen, site of the 1997 Irish Open). His sons (Matthew, 11, and Sam, 6) live with their mother in Toronto and are showing a keen interest, he says proudly, in following in their parents' professional footsteps: "Michael has done plays and extra work, and Sam just went to his first audition."

The US tyremaker pulled out of Grand Prix racing at the end of the 1974 season and Bennett went to Hesketh for a short period before joining Team Lotus in 1975. He was chief race engineer with the team until 1979 when he and Ralph Bellamy were asked by Mo Nunn of Team Ensign to design a car for him. The team had found backing from Unipart and would hire Clay Regazzoni as the driver. The Ensign N180 was quite competitive but Regazzoni crashed at Long Beach and suffered serious back injuries. Bennett stayed on with the team until it was merged with Theodore at the end of 1982. Bennett designed the last F1 Theodore but the team closed down at the end of 1983.
