Extractions: Ich finde Fiona Apple's CD "Tidal" eine der besten, die zur Zeit auf dem Markt ist. Ihr Stil ist originell, neu und ihre Texte lyrisch und sehr tief in Bedeutung. Alle ihre Lieder handeln von gebrochenen Herzen, erzählen aber von Leiden, nicht sehr melancholisch, sondern mit den Folgen für das Selbstebewustsein nach einer Beziehung. "Sleep To Dream" ist hingegen allen anderen Liedern gegenüber etwas schwerer und auch (man kann es in der Stimme hören) ärgerlicher, was Fiona angeht. "Sullen Girl" ist weich und sehr entspannend und, man weiss es im ersten Augenblick nicht, handelt von Fionas Vergewaltigung. Der Text ist sehr poetisch. "Criminal" und "Shadowboxer" sind sehr melodiös. "Slow like honey" ist ein Blues, mit dem flair Frischverliebter und der Ungewissheit, was neue Beziehungen bringen werden. Fionas dunkle Stimme verleiht dem Lied ausserdem die Gespanntheit. Der Satz "though dreams can be deceiving as faces are to hearts they serve for sweet relieving when fantasy and reality lie to far apart."

Extractions: W hen Fiona Apple burst onto the scene a few years ago with the biting and cynical Tidal she appeared to be merely a slightly less toxic version of Canada's Alanis Morissette. Her lyrics were outwardly cocky and angry while revealing a bruised and perhaps abused psyche. Her music made allusions to jazz and blues, but in the end sounded more like a carnival hurdy-gurdy with its odd time structures and sparse arrangements. Tidal was intriguing in its honesty and licentiousness, but it didn't seem to indicate that Apple had the potential to offer a more substantial work. However, Apple's second album When the Pawn... (I won't enter into the debate about the pretentious paragraph-long official title for the record) proves that she is not just an angry young woman with an interesting voice but one of the few major talents working in popular music today. Extractions: Combine all the ingredients, except the oil, chili sauce, and jelly, in a bowl and stir until well mixed. Heat the oil in a skillet, using enough to coat the bottom of the pan. Form the mixture into 1-inch balls and fry in the oil until they are brown and thoroughly cooked. Meanwhile, place the chili sauce and jelly together in a saucepan. Heat and stir until smooth. When the mock meatballs are finished cooking, add them to the sauce and stir to coat well. Simmer over low heat for 10 to 15 minutes. Serve with noodles, rice, or a vegetable side dish.
