Extractions: When I had my studio in the late 60s, one of my regular clients was Coronet Magazine, a Reader's Digest sized monthly. The difference was that Coronet used many more photographs. Bill Tompkins was Coronet's art director and he had been the first to give me editorial assignments on a long-term basis. This marked a certain level of success in New York's highly competitive photography industry and for that, I'm eternally grateful to Bill. The diverse theme list of photo illustrations for Coronet ranged from depicting consumer decisions to sexual problems. One day Bill asked me if I would shoot a fashion feature of Rudi Gernreich originals modeled by an actress who was in a comeback phase, from a self-imposed hiatus. When he told me that it was Ann-Margret, I was excited that he had chosen me over other bigger name photographers to photograph this well known lady. "We feel that your work has a fresh look," said Bill, which thrilled me even more, making me feel unique in New York City's photo community. That day, when Ann-Margret walked through my door and shook hands with me, I was totally overwhelmed by realizing that this woman who had actually worked with Elvis, had come here to work with me! Being a relative newcomer to having my own studio photography business at that time, I did not yet have a great fortune's worth of studio lighting equipment. The studio was a large high-ceilinged room with a tall wall of windows that provided southern exposure. When there was sun, I could rely on many hours of daylight shooting and for very cloudy days or at night, there were floodlamps and small electronic flash units to use. With a tripod, a Hasselblad and Miranda 35mm cameras, I was off and running, getting all kinds of interesting, shooting assignments that paid me enough to run my studio and keep a private, tiny apartment nearby.

Extractions: I am a huge fan, and I finally got to see this movie, not available on video, on AMC. The 'plot' concerns good girl journalist Kelly Olsson (A-M's real last name) who wants to be published in "Girl-lure" men's magazine, and she wants her story published, not her photo. She writes a lurid expose of a wild swinger girl and tells the horny editor the girl in the story is her, to try to get it printed. So, she has to spend the rest of the movie convincing the Girl-lure staff she is for real. Please note that this plot summary makes the movie's plot sound much more coherent than it actually is. George Sidney directed the movie and it shows. He was the director of Bye Bye Birdie, totally smitten with Ann-Margret, who saw her talent when she was still fairly unknown and used his own money to shoot a new beginning and ending for BBB showcasing A-M. Visited with the lovely actress Ann-Margret, at 59 looking as beautiful and radiant as you can imagine, on April 27, 2000, when she was on MSU's campus to give the keynote speech at Kaleidoscope, a women's event sponsored by the MSUAA. After the speech, I had an opportunity to escort her through three floors in Kellogg Center from the main ballroom to a private room upstairs, taking a labyrinthian route in order to escape the autograph houndettes. During much of this trek Ann-Margret held onto my arm. Once, enroute to a basement elevator, she erupted into a song and dance routine singing the famous "Fever" (popularized by Peggy Lee, way back when). I wish someone with a video camera had recorded that moment! Here Ann-Margret asked to use my back for support in order to sign a program for a fan. We were in the Corniche Room of Kellogg Center, where a private reception was held after the event.
