Damon told Radio 1 that he's really enthusiastic about it and hopes to get others into something different to the music that's currently available; "If someone listening to Radio 1 could be switched on something that takes them away from the mainstream menu ['Pop Idol', that kind of thing], I don't know what to think of that any more. I was talking to Simon Fuller in LA, and he was saying how he was about to launch it in America, and I just looked at him and said, 'well I'm going to Africa, so good luck'." The Mali musicians will perform live with Damon for the first time tonight (Tues Mar 26) at London's Barbican centre. The album is due to be released mid-April.

I was approached by Oxfam to go to Mali as their ambassador and get involved in their various initiatives out there. But I felt that was missing the point of using me, a musician. Im not really one of those people who believes that if youre a musician you can just leave that behind and start getting into politics, he explains. So I went back to them and said that Id rather go and meet the musicians and see if there is some kind of common link that I could develop something from.
