Extractions: return to Archives July-August 2000 Lenore Lim waves Philippine flag at UN art exhibit I was in New York when the infamous love bug virus hit what before were the impregnable and fortified corridors of power in the world, exacting a mind-blowing damage running to billions of dollars. The culprit was initially traced to have come from the Philippines where computer technology is yet at its infant stage. And boy, how we made news in America. We were electronically bannered in the running news bulletin at Times Square and Rockefeller Center. Lim showing her works to UN Secretary General Kofi Annan during the opening reception. CNN was squeezing the news to the pulp by the hour. And the New York Times bandied the picture of Onel de Guzman in full color on the front page, with a jump inside where the content of Art Borjal's now controversial article on "Yes, The Filipino Can!" was mangled point by point. Such that when Bb. Pilipinas Nina Ricci Alagao, a student in the College of Fine Arts, was bruited to be a serious contender to the Miss Universe crown, hope suddenly materialized in the air. This might just be the needed cosmetics to the tarnished picture the country was being portrayed, including of course the merciless censure President Estrada got from both

Extractions: May 17 Column U sually when we speak of victims of war, we mean the innocent civilians that get caught up in the fighting between two sides: The children, the women, the sick and the elderly. But this week on ABS-CBN's weekly newsmagazine "The Correspondents", I was able to see the other victims of war: The soldiers. But this week on ABS-CBN's weekly newsmagazine "The Correspondents", I was able to see the other victims of war: The soldiers. I thought the program might be propagandistic in tone, but it wasn't. Instead of putting words into the mouths of people, it let them speak for themselves, and was all the more powerful for it. The widow of a 31-year-old soldier, cut down in his prime while trying to free hostages from the Abu Sayyaf, told how she explained to each of her children of varying ages what had happened to their father. Through her grief and tears, as she sat in her home surrounded by his leftover uniforms and pictures of her dead husband, and while their children kept on playing with his things, it was hard to keep a dry eye. Next, the program focused on soldiers who had been seriously injured but survived. A military hospital ward was shown full of wounded men, most had had body parts blown off in combat, and all had experienced a lot of pain. Many of the soldiers shown had their legs blown off by grenades and would be wheelchair-bound for life. Each dismembered soldier receives only P15,000 from the government, while each family of a dead soldier receives only P25,000. These are obscene, miniscule amounts that don't even begin to compensate for the damage done to Filipino soldiers and their families.
