Imagine the American republic of the 19th century: at the beginning, a sparsely populated agrarian nation where the president, Thomas Jefferson, fords rivers on horseback to make it to his own inauguration; at the end of the century, it's a land of densely populated cities, teeming with factories and linked by a network of railroads. This extraordinary transition--and all the economic upheavals that went along with it--is described in the opening chapters of Money, Greed, and Risk, and provides the historical context for a broader look at how booms and busts happen. Charles Morris tells the story of American financial markets by looking at its larger-than-life characters: Nicholas Biddle (the first U.S. central banker), Jay Gould (a much-hated financial genius who patched together a network of rail lines), steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, oil baron John D. Rockefeller, and, of course, J.P. Morgan, who made America the world's banker. By the time these men had all passed from public life, the U.S. economy had changed from a primitive system that could be bent to the will of a single financier, such as Morgan, to a sophisticated, highly regulated, world-dominating conglomeration of massive corporations.

Then along came Michael Milken and things changed again. Morris makes this chronicle entertaining and enlightening, although the reader is expected to have some previous knowledge of finance and history. He finds connections where we don't expect them--for example, linking the leverage tactics of junk-bond king Milken to early-19th-century "wildcat" bankers. He also makes it easy to understand the accordion-like expansions and contractions in the world's developing economies. Once you've read this book, you'll feel as if you've seen everything before. --Lou SchulerBook Description
The world seems awash in financial crises. The Asian crisis of 1998, the near-demise of Long Term Capital Management, and the black hole of Russia are just a few of the most recent. Are they the result of greedy speculators, crony capitalism, or the warp speed of the forces of globalization? Can we send in the repairman and get things fixed through the legal and regulatory systems?

Or are other causes at work that may be beyond our control?

Money, Greed, and Risk is that rare book which, through adroit analysis of both historical and contemporary events and their leading players, lends new insights into the causes of financial turmoil.  Charles Morris:

Explores the eternal cycle of financial crises: from brilliant innovation to gross excess and inevitable crash, before investors and institutions catch up.

Explains why the American financial system grew from a capital-starved backwater in the nineteenth century to one that plays the leading role in the world today.

Examines the technological, economic, demographic, and industrial experiences that caused the financial engine to kick into such high gear in the 1980s and 1990s.

Shows how the boom-and-bust cycle in early American history helps illuminate recent events in South Asia and Russia. In the process we become more realistic about what to expect during the nascent stages of capitalism and market development everywhere.

Explains that globalization is nothing new. The investment system in the nineteenth century was perhaps even more global than the world today.

Looks at contemporary financial geniuses--Michael Milken is a good example--and shows that they didn't invent any financial instruments that nineteenth-century counterparts like Jay Gould hadn't already thought of.

There are a handful of books about finance and the financial markets that are substantive enough to provide intellectual grist for sophisticated investors while also providing intriguing explanations of contemporary events that will be of interest to a general audience. Money, Greed, and Risk is one of them.

Finance is the plumbing that makes capitalism run. And, like a good plumbing system, finance is invisible when working well. But just as a broken pipe can be a disaster, so too when the financial system breaks and crises and crashes occur. We look to understand the causes and Charles Morris provides unusual insights that bring our understanding to a new level. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The "greatest hits" of financial choas
Mr. Morris book provides a very readable survey of financial crisis which occured during the last 150 years. The real value of this book lies Mr. Morris's commentary which draws into focus the fundamental similarities between seemingly unrelated financial disasters.

It is banal to observe that the future is likely to include some as-yet unforseen financial meltdown.Armegeddon-peddlers, chicken-littlers, and perpetual bears have been saying this for centuries. It it brilliance on the part of Mr. Morris to explain exactly why this is the case.

Mr. Morris debunks the garden varieties of conventional wisdom, which variously held that financial crisis are "caused" by currency speculators, Michael Milken, junk bonds traders, Jews, computer trading programs, etc.Mr. Morris demonstrates that all crisis run a predictable course: economic innovation and growth, corresponding financial innovation provide capital to fuel the growth, over-shoot of valuations of the new financial mechanisms by financial markets chasing high yields, and the invevitable crash and ensuing chaos.

The USA Savings and Loan debacle, Asian currency crisis, British investments in post Civil War USA railroads are all shown as variations on this theme.

I did not award 5 stars because the book often delves into complex financial mechanisms which could have been explained in a more layman friendly manner.

3-0 out of 5 stars Rough going for the amateur economist
I found this to be a very well written and interesting book and learned a great deal, but much of the book was over my head. An example: "...They [Barings] were the major underwriters of the bonds for the Louisiana Purchase, and in the 1820s rapidly expanded their underwritings of American state bonds to finance internal improvements. But the bookkeeping on their securities was still following trade-based forms. Issuers of bonds were authorized to draw bills of exchange on the Barings, which they would cover by forwarding the new securities to London, just as merchants would cover a trade bill by forwarding the documents on a cotton cargo." A substantial portion of the book is similarly written, but balanced by a healthy dose of colorful characters and sharp opinions by Morris.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing new...
Charles Morris' book, despite its historical depth, falls short of providing a new insight on financial crises. This book is great for starters but cannot compete against Chancellor's "devil take thehindmost" or Kindleberger's "manias, panics and crashes".Clearly a dominated asset...

5-0 out of 5 stars The Wisdom of Historical Perspective on Today's Market
An excellent book for the serious investor who wants historical perspective on the market changes happening today. It's added gift is that it will imbue its reader with the knowledge to preserve wealth and actuallyprofit whenever the next financial crisis comes, since the author provesthat there is not much new in modern crises, and their prescriptions, thatcouldn't be found in crises a hundred years ago. The author serves thereader well by constantly pointing out the irresponsibility of the nation'sbankers and financial institutions especially when motivated by greed-"the opportunity to fleece the greedy proved irresistible,"Theauthor possesses the rare skill of being able to see the wood for the treesand of relating that to his readers. The foreword is right on.

5-0 out of 5 stars A View of Morality & Changing Financial Markets
I found myself continuously amazed at the insights that Morris shows in his analysis of US financial markets and in their basic similarity over 150 years -- similar but more complex. I have been a student of financialmarkets for over forty years and I confess that I found insights beingexpanded consistently. As I read I kept thinking "What a greatcritical summary!" ... Book Description
What we think of as the modern American economy was the creation of four men: Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, Jay Gould, and J. P. Morgan. They were the giants of the Gilded Age, and lived at a moment of riotous growthand real violencethat established America as the richest, most inventive, and most productive country on the planet. They are, quite literally, the founding fathers of our economyand, thus, of modern America. Acclaimed author and journalist Charles R. Morris vividly brings these four men to life. On one side are Carnegie, the ruthless competitor; Gould, the provocateur in the shadows; and Rockefeller, the visionary who understood how to manage sprawling empires. These three were obsessed with progress, experiment, and speed. In steel, railroads, oil, and money markets, they rallied behind a single-minded code: bigger, cheaper, faster. And then there was Morgan, the gentleman businessman, who fought, instead, for a global trust in American business. Through their competition over the last decades of the nineteenth century, they built a powerful nation populated with consumers as well as producers, fostering the growth of the middle class. The Tycoons tells the incredible story of how four determined men wrenched the economy into the modern age, inventing a nation of full economic participation that could not have been imagined only a few decades earlier. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Tycoons by Charles Morris
This is a fascinating book, especially for those outside the US who may, like me, be almost wholly unfamiliar with the period of history covered. Morris is excellent at making detail interesting and compulsive to read. The book weaves the lives four very different men into a coherent story. The way in which these "Robber Barons" presage the emerge of Mr Gates (at Microsoft), Mr Brin and Page (at Google) was a very important message for me. This was something I "knew", but could not support, or articulate clearly. Morris has done the job and I am now keen to read his other books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Pay Heed to The Reviews
Alas, I should have listened to my fellow Amazoners.

They tried to warn me that despite the misleading title there wasn't very much in this book about the tycoons themselves. Well, I ignored them and blew the full retail price at a local store. If you want to read in minute detail about how a variety of engineering and manufacturing problems which had plagued industry were finally solved by the great minds of the second half of the 19th century, this book is for you. If you want to read about Gould, Carnegie, Rockefeller, Hill, Stanford, and Morgan, check out Matthew Josephson's classic instead. There's very little about any of the tycoons here.

The editors of this book should have insisted on another, more accurate, title.

As for the book itself, it's a pedestrian-like plod through history. Some books you can't put down after picking them up. This is most definitely not one one of them. I find myself taking taking one or two week breaks in between chapters while I devour other books in two consecutive evenings.

If you want to learn about the background in which the robber barons operated this may be the book for you. Just be forewarned that there's scant little about them between the covers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great summary of Economic History
This is a great book for looking at the economic history of the United States. It covers mostly the four mentioned in the title but what was really fantastic and what deserves that extra star is that it covers the economic developments on the side.It looks at how our economy outpace Europe and the shift to make America that extra superpower.WE also have a look at how our ability to move west gave us an added advantage and that we did not have to resort to colonies. While we exported much we still made tremendous gains in internal improvements. He also grasp how the development of the coronation as an institution led to the rise of clerical and accounting positions creating hundreds of service jobs. This book is incredibly well written and really holds your interest. It offered the best explanation of Gould's attempt to corner the gold market I have ever read.It is very well researched and makes references to the top economic historians out there.A must read for anyone who wants to understand how the United States developed economically

4-0 out of 5 stars PRESENT AT THE BIRTH
I picked up "The Tycoons" to read, in one place, a chatty summation of recent research about Rockefeller, Gould, Carnegie, and Morgan, but instead found myself pulled through a keyhole onto a vast landscape new to me: how America invented mass-market manufacturing. We were the first country to figure out how to make two rifles so exactly alike that their components could be mixed and matched on the battlefield. The Silicon Valley of this period was the Connecticut River, navigable down to New York with access, via the Erie Canal, to the midwest markets. This river was the site of all the key water-powered factories where early automation and assembly lines created the first mass-produced items for daily life. Besides famous tycoons, we meet the forgotten engineers and efficiency experts who invented modern manufacturing and then spread its gospel to Europe. Through this book you are present at the birth of American economic dynamism. A readable and fascinating survey.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing new, but a good review of the period
Charles Morris's "The Tycoons" is a good summation of the Industrial Revolution but is almost certainly poorly sub-titled with "How Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, Jay Gould and J.P. Morgan Invented the Supereconomy".The New York Times did a review on October 2, 2005 and Todd Buchholtz hit the nail on the head writing "The Tycoons is not a path-breaking work of scholarship, testing new hypotheses against freshly uncovered facts."In fact a good part of Morris's book has nothing to do with these four very important men of commerce influenced anything.Rather he does show what the principal drivers behind such an economic explosion were. His writings on the four are based upon good, but not really extensive, research. For instance, much of his writing on Morgan is attributable to the best seller by Ron Chernow, The House of Morgan. While this was certainly a terrific book, to have it as THE principal souce or one of your main topics, is to short change any serious effort at research.

He manages to get a plug on the book by I.W. Brands of the University of Texas, one of our most well respected historians on the period.Perhaps Professor Brands saw something I did not. That said, it is a quick read and a rather fun one.A bit more organization would have gone a long way. ... Book Description
An over-the-shoulder look at a major heart surgery center, with gripping accounts from the OR to the boardroom.

Americans now spend more money on hearts than on new passenger cars. To understand this remarkable trend, Charles R. Morris "embedded" himself with a surgical team at New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, one of the world's premier cardiac surgery and transplant centers. Given unprecedented access, Morris witnessed sophisticated operations and observed the tense meetings where surgeons relentlessly criticize their own performance. In thrilling detail, Morris recounts a late-night against-the-clock "harvest run" to secure a precious transplantable organ; the heart-breaking story of a child's failed transplant; a trainee surgeon's brutal daily regimen; and much more. Along the way, Morris documents the fifty years of research and hundreds of millions of dollars that have been expended on creating a reliable mechanical heart, and he steps back to reflect on how doctors think and how they judge each other, what is really driving health care costs, and the future of health care policy in America. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "The Surgeons" from a patient's perspective
With amazing detail, "The Surgeons: Life and Death in a Top Heart Center" provides a view of many behind-the-scene challenges of modern cardiac surgery.I spent four days as a patient in the cardiac unit at New York's Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital while author Charles Morris shadowed surgeons "unrestricted" in the same unit for an entire year.

It is quite fascinating to read what doctors are thinking, feeling and doing while life is literally in their hands. Cardiac surgery is one of the few procedures in which, at every moment, "the patient is at risk of sudden death." As a result of many long years of medical training and incredible sacrifice, cardiothoracic surgeons provide their patients the gift we all crave, longevity and quality of life.

Charles Morris writes a fascinating description of what happens once a heart patient is anesthetized on the operating table. Prep work takes about an hour. The patient is "shaved, and painted almost head to toe with bright red antiseptic; various monitoring leads and hookups are affixed around the body, breathing and imaging tubes pushed down the throat, a flow monitoring catheter is threaded through the jugular vein" into the heart, and a urinary catheter into the bladder. The patient is wrapped with yards and yards of sterile tape and gauze and "eyes are taped shut."

When Columbia-Presbyterian heart surgeon Craig Smith, MD recently opened my chest, the mitral and aortic valves were beyond repair with healed endocarditis and a worn out aortic root.In 8.5 hours of surgery, Dr. Smith skillfully removed scar tissue and replaced both valves with bovine (cow) tissue and the aorta with a 28mm graft.

Although many of the more difficult cases are sent to Columbia-Presbyterian, heart valve surgery is considered "relatively routine." Craig Smith performs about 350 heart operations a year and heads up the largest heart transplant center in the country.

Congratulations to Charles Morris for his eloquence, as he provides heart patients and the public a greater understanding and cardiothoracic surgeons and the medical community a voice.

3-0 out of 5 stars My heart be still ... AND healthy!!!!
Author Charles Morris offers insightful profiles of top cardiac surgeons at a New York area medical center. One gets a sense of the incredible training and sacrifice that goes into being one of these medical virtuosos, who literally hold the lives of patients in their skilled hands.

Morris also provides an interesting discussion of health care economics, making predictions on how America may attempt to address the healthcare crisis what with the aging of the Baby Boomer generation.

Morris' admiration for the surgeons profiled often leaves him awestruck, with a tendency to deify these practitioners.Rolled out as the proverbial whipping boys are the Bad Guys of Big Pharma and Medical Device Companies. The critique tends to obscure the fact that doctors are somewhat willing participants in the promotional schemes used by such firms, but they escape much of the venom that Morris reserves for health care businesses.

"The Surgeons" is an enlightening and thought-provoking book on specialists that you hope you'll never have to see.Take care of your ticker!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Surgeons is a fascinating read!
The Surgeons is an intriguing glimpse into the lives and work of the heart surgeons at New York's Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital, one of the world's top cardiac surgery centers.

Author Charles Morris provides an intimate look at the work of these virtuosos who hold lives in their hands every day. We get to know such artisans as Craig Smith, head of cardiothoracic surgery, who is well-known for doing the quadruple bypass on former President Bill Clinton; Eric Rose, a cardiothoracic surgeon and chairman of the Department of Surgery; Mehmet Oz, senior adult cardiac surgeon, well-known author of three New York Times best-sellers, and regular contributor on Oprah; and many others, whose names will be better known as a result of this book.

From his unparalleled access to attend surgeries and meetings, Morris gives us an incredibly insightful view into how these surgeons think. It's a real-world, insider's look at the people, problems, and politics in a major hospital. As an example, he explores the politics between the surgeons and the interventional cardiologists, and talks about how their disciplines are converging.

The book tackles a variety of topics, from how the heart works and the history of heart surgery to health care policy and directions for high tech medicine. It even explores the innovative new business models pursued by Columbia-Presbyterian. An intriguing bit of trivia that Morris reveals is that Thomas J. Watson, former chairman of IBM, made a personal project of financing and developing the heart-lung bypass machine, which is still used today in many open-heart surgeries.

Morris excels at sharing the stories of surgeries and the patients benefiting from them. We get an intimate look at patients that made it and those that didn't. We experience the heart-rending story of four-year old Erika Maynard and her family, a story sure to tear at your heart strings. We get to go with him on a heart transplant run to secure a heart, and then see it transplanted. Morris' writing is so visual, and the stories so real and vivid, that you actually see and feel them.

The Surgeons is a fascinating read!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Book on Painting Method
I have read dozens of books on painting method and this one is the best. It does have shortcomings, the language is dated, it is disorganized and some printings have the text running at 90 degrees to a conventional book, but for overall content, practical & inspirational, it tops my list. It's a challenging read but it is packed with useful information. I've read that it was Robert Henri's (the important Ash Can painter and "author" of "The Art Spirit") "bible" and that for years he carried it around with him. In many ways it is comparable to "The Art Spirit" though to me, it is even better. Hunt hammers on the importance of value relationships and painting broadly. These are two issues that most painters would benefit from understanding better. Of course, many other topics are discussed, here are a few quotes: "Think all that you can! Put down as little hand-work as possible, and as much intelligence" ... "In trying to paint sunlight behind those trees, bang away, and get it light enough! What color to use? I don't care what colors you use, only get it light where it is light!" ... "In painting the stem of a flower, put your brush in the right place, and draw it down at once, firmly. Don't go along tick, tick, tick! and don't be afraid of it!" ... "Instead of one canvas, ready to paint on, you ought to have forty, and paint for a joke. I have a hundred and fifty in the waiting" ..."It is impossible to make a picture without values. Values are the basis. If they are not, tell me what is the basis!" ... "It has been said that 'genius consists in the power of taking a hint'. Genius is nothing but love. If you love to paint, if you love to sing, if you love to black boots, you are a genius. The reverse is hatred" ... "I should never alter that picture. You must not get into the habit of allowing outsiders to interfere with your work. It is fatal. It will ruin you as a painter" ..."Remember that there must be an accent to everything: to a landscape, a head, or a loaf of bread. There must be one light. If you make your reflected lights too strong, your object becomes concave." ... Paint every day as a matter of course; just as you would eat your breakfast. Paint a hundred sketches, of anything you please, and stack them up. Perhaps one of them will be a picture" ... See what the vital things are! Give up all idea of 'finish'! Nobody ever finished. Keep the canvas as a slate to do your sums on. Don't expect to finish it, sign your name and present it to your grandmother." ... "Be frank and fearless about your work! Get rid of the timidity that makes you fear to hurt your drawing." ... "you can't do good work unless you are physically in order for it. It requires as much strength to paint well as to plough." ... "Hold a sheet of white paper behind that head, and see how dark the outline of that face is in light" ..."Everything is interesting if only you make a study of it, aiming to do it simply. Fifteen minutes' work done at white heat, as it were, is better than all day's working at anything." As you may be able to see, the book is entertaing, heartwarming and very useful. It's great! ... This volume includes thirty of the most significant essays from the literature on social protest rhetoric. From Leland Griffin's groundbreaking work, "The Rhetoric of Historical Movements," to very recent case studies of specific movements, the selections show the evolution of a dynamic scholarship—its theoretical foundations, the debates that shape further inquiry, the critical studies that illustrate key theoretical positions. Substantive introductions to the three sections highlight key points, vital connections, and recurring conflicts. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great contemporary novel based on the classic, In His Steps
This is a very touching book which gets you thinking and challenges you to walk in faith. I have never read In His Steps, but I liked this book, which I think is very similar except it is a contemporary version. In the novel,a pastor of a church challenges his congregation with the ulitmatequestion-- What Would Jesus Do? He challenges them to ask themselves thisquestion before making any decision. This challenge also affects us as thereader because it also challenges us. It is a good challenge, to think ofwhat Jesus would do before making any decision, and I think it is achallenge we all should take. ... Read more

Book Description
The sub-prime mortgage crisis is only the beginning: A more profound economic and political restructuring is on its way.

We are living in the most reckless financial environment in recent history. Arcane credit derivative bets are now well into the tens of trillions.

According to Charles R. Morris, the astronomical leverage at investment banks and their hedge fund and private equity clients virtually guarantees massive disruption in global markets. The crash, when it comes, will have no firebreaks. A quarter century of free-market zealotry that extolled asset stripping, abusive lending, and hedge fund secrecy will come crashing down with it.

The Trillion Dollar Meltdown explains how we got here, and what is about to happen. After the crash our priorities will be quite different. But things are likely to get worse before they better. Whether you are an active investor, a homeowner, or a contributor to your 401(k) plan, The Trillion Dollar Meltdown will be indispensable to understanding the gross excess that has put the world economy on the brink--and what the new landscape will look like. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Review of Morris' 'The Aryan Race'
This book provides interesting insight into how 'race' was conceptualized at the turn of the last century. It describes the 'logic' behind the notion of 'Aryan supremacy' based on the limited 'evidence' avaiable and the philosphy of that era. I found the book facinating (from a historical perspective) although there were several sections that were blatently racist. However, if read with an understanding the this is a historical piece of work which reflects Victorian/Edwardian thinking, then I think the reader will be amply rewarded.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good History of Our People
The Aryan Race is an oldie but a goldie. Written in 1882 it is free of a lot of the National Socialist non-sense on Aryanism, but not all of its thought are right.
It is a great book on the history of our people, a good book for anyone studying who we are.Good for students of Asatru. Wyatt Kaldenberg ... Read more

Book Description

In Queering Public Address ten noted rhetoricalcritics disrupt the silence regarding nonnormative sexualities in the studyof American historical discourse and upend the heteronormativity thatgoverns much of rhetorical history. Reconfiguring Quintilian's mandate thatan orator is a good man speaking well, contributors grapple at theintersection of rhetoric, history, and sexuality as they interrogatehistorically situated discursive performances, politics, and meanings ofthe "good queer speaking well." Enacting both political and radicalvisions, these scholars articulate the promises of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender public address and the critiques that work to deepen theirfulfillment.

Charles E. Morris III introduces thevolume by offering a portrait of the queer historical/rhetorical critic, one vexed by disciplinary disorientation, seeking to reverse what Morristerms the "queer impoverishment" of the field of public address studies.Continuing the discourse, Dana L. Cloud, Ralph R. Smith, Russel R. Windes,Karen A. Foss, Julie Thompson, and Morris critically approach fromnonnormative perspectives various principles, objects, methods, andtheories that have explicitly or implicitly directed the practice andjudgment of rhetorical-historical analysis.

In the latter part of the volume, John M.Sloop, Eric King Watts, Robert Alan Brookey, Lisbeth Lipari, and Lester C.Olson examine specific historical subjects, voices, styles, andperformances by means of various discourses that intersected in relation toideologies, issues, and events constituting queerness over time. Thecontributors consider figures such as Abraham Lincoln, Eleanor Roosevelt,Harvey Milk, Marlon Riggs, and Lorraine Hansberry and issues as diverse ascollective identity, nineteenth-century semiotics of gender and sexuality, the sexual politics of the Harlem Renaissance, psychiatric productions ofthe queer, and violence-induced traumatic styles. ...
